Companies Using OpenLayers
OpenLayers is a free JavaScript library for putting interactive maps on web pages, released under the 2-clause BSD license, and our October 2026 crawl finds it on 7,134 domains. Treat that as a floor. We count a site when a page loads an OpenLayers script or exposes its global object, so applications that bundle current OpenLayers from npm mostly don't show up. The companies that use OpenLayers on this page include the FAA, the City of Philadelphia, Deutsche Börse and Barcelona City Council, and we matched 4,742 of the 7,134 domains to a company.
OpenLayers ranks #11 in Maps & Geolocation with a 0.29% share, far behind Google Maps and Leaflet. Its visible base is old and European. Germany has 1,604 of the 4,742 matched companies, and about a third of the domains we detect still expose the OpenLayers 2 API, whose last release came out in July 2013. WordPress runs on 43.98% of OpenLayers domains, mostly through map plugins that bundle the library.

OpenLayers Usage Statistics
Our current crawl window counts 6,331 OpenLayers domains in June 2026, 6,792 in July, 6,994 in August, 7,173 in September and 7,134 in October. The line has flattened, and October sits 39 domains below September. Counts are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so the early steps say as much about our coverage as about new maps. Exits are heavy for a base this size. 1,670 domains have dropped OpenLayers since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, and only 124 of them still run it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use OpenLayers the Most?
Which countries use OpenLayers the most? Germany, with 1,604 of the 4,742 matched companies (33.83%), more than three times the United States (453). Spain (362), Brazil (334), France (319) and the United Kingdom (211) follow. Each large country has its own route in. In Germany it's municipal TYPO3 sites and a WordPress map plugin; in Brazil, web-radio site builders that ship OpenLayers on every station's site; in Spain, a real-estate CRM's listing pages. Iran (72) gets it partly through the Neshan maps SDK, which loads OpenLayers 4.6.5.
Share of the 4,742 OpenLayers domains we matched to a company record — 66.5% of the 7,134 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
OpenLayers Market Share Among Maps & Geolocation
What is OpenLayers's market share? 0.29% of Maps & Geolocation, ranking #11, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Embedded map services dominate the category: Google Maps holds 78.04% (1,908,503 domains), and Leaflet 10.1% (246,886), about 35 times OpenLayers' 7,134. Two things hold the share down. OpenLayers is a developer library, so its real rival is Leaflet rather than a Google Maps embed. And our rule can't see current OpenLayers builds bundled from npm.
Top Competitors by Market Share
OpenLayers Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use OpenLayers? By count, small ones. 65.03% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 84.22% (3,080 of 3,657) have 50 or fewer. Many are radio stations, estate agents, restaurants and small firms whose map came with a plugin or site builder. The 107 companies above 1,000 staff include public bodies running OpenLayers on a map or data portal, such as the FAA, Turkey's postal service PTT and Somerset Council.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
OpenLayers companies skew older than jQuery UI's. 36.53% of matched companies with a known founding year predate 2000: 14.48% from the 1990s, 4.51% from the 1980s, 5.17% from the 1970s, 2.91% from the 1960s and 9.46% (130 companies) from before 1960. The 2010s still lead at 32.68%, and only 11.72% date from the 2020s. City councils and universities with long histories make up that old tail.
What Industries Use OpenLayers the Most?
Government Administration leads at 9.15% (336 companies), with Real Estate close behind at 8.25% (303), based on our enriched company data. Retail and Broadcast Media Production and Distribution tie at 3.54%. The broadcast figure is odd for a map library, and it fits the Brazilian web-radio site builders that bundle OpenLayers on every station's site. The top ten industries add up to 39.75%.
Government agencies using OpenLayers run it where they publish geodata: the FAA's Airport Data and Information Portal, Philadelphia's property search, Barcelona's city guide and the PTT branch finder. Real estate companies on OpenLayers often get it from their software vendor; in Spain, listing sites built on the Mobilia Gestión CRM load the same OpenLayers 5 build. Universities using OpenLayers include Kennesaw State and Northampton Community College, whose campus maps are built by CampusTours.
OpenLayers Alternatives & Competitors
OpenLayers' real rival in this table is Leaflet (10.1%, 246,886 domains), the other open-source map library. Google Maps (78.04%) is mostly an embedded service, and Mapbox GL JS (1.69%) is Mapbox's own map SDK. Overlap is common: 806 domains run OpenLayers and Leaflet today, 733 run it with Google Maps and 79 with Mapbox GL JS. None of these pairs passes our switching tests, because most domains ever seen with both still run both (806 of 1,021 for Leaflet).

Tech Stack of OpenLayers-Powered Websites
Across the 7,119 live OpenLayers domains in our stack analysis, jQuery runs on 89.25%, jQuery Migrate on 42.98% and jQuery UI on 41.16%, a classic front end rather than a React or Vue build. WordPress is on 43.98%, TYPO3 on 7.54% and Drupal on 4.23%. The Directorist directory plugin, which bundles OpenLayers for its OpenStreetMap maps, is on 5.28%. Matomo (9.65%) runs on about one site for every four with Google Analytics (40.55%), which fits the European public-sector sites in this base, and Microsoft ASP.NET (7.53%) marks the custom-built portals.

Expert Analysis: OpenLayers Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I care a lot about what a detection rule can see, and with OpenLayers the rule decides which kind of user you find. As of our October 2026 crawl, TechnologyChecker.io detects OpenLayers on 7,134 domains, and we matched 4,742 of them to a company. That count covers sites that load OpenLayers as a script or expose its global object. The npm-bundled OpenLayers that GIS developers ship today mostly leaves no trace we can read, so treat 7,134 as a floor and the visible base as the older end of the market.
What the rule sees
We count a domain when a page exposes the OpenLayers 2 global (OpenLayers.VERSION_NUMBER) or the ol object from a full OpenLayers build, or loads a script whose address contains "openlayers". To check what that catches, I fetched a random sample of 90 detected domains. Of the 49 where the marker was visible in the page source, 9 loaded OpenLayers through the OSM WordPress plugin and 8 through other WordPress plugins (WP Go Maps, Directorist, a Bulgarian courier's office-finder plugin for WooCommerce and others). Another 7 got it from Brazilian web-radio site builders, and 11 from CMS extensions and vertical platforms: TYPO3, Contao and Drupal modules, a Spanish real-estate CRM, an Iranian map SDK and a German jobs-portal network. Ten served it from their own servers. Only four loaded it straight from a public CDN or openlayers.org.
Sales Signal: 35 of those 49 sites got OpenLayers from a plugin or platform rather than a developer's decision. Separate the hand-built portals before you treat this as a list of GIS teams.
Growth trajectory
The current window runs from 6,331 domains in June 2026 to 7,173 in September and 7,134 in October. Counts are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so the early steps say as much about our coverage as about new maps. The line is flat now. Exits are heavy for a base this size. 1,670 domains dropped OpenLayers since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, and only 124 of them still run it on another hostname.
"The OpenLayers we can count is mostly OpenLayers 2 and early ol builds loaded by script tag. The OpenLayers people write today compiles into an app bundle, and from the outside it looks like nothing." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: the 1,546 exits that left no OpenLayers on any hostname are mostly whole sites rebuilt or retired. What remains is long-lived portals and plugin installs, a slow-moving base to sell maintenance into.
OpenLayers 2 is still a third of the base
Over the last 60 days, 2,447 of the 7,162 domains we detected exposed the OpenLayers 2 API, and 2,061 of those reported version 2.13.1, the final release of that line, dated 9 July 2013 on openlayers.org. Its GitHub repository now calls it "OpenLayers v2 - deprecated!"; the current line is 10.11.0, published on 4 October 2026. Some of those sites run OpenLayers 2 on a vendor's schedule. CampusTours' AnyMap campus maps carry 2.13.1 inside their own bundle, and the OSM WordPress plugin loads 2.13.1 next to a current ol build. Others are hand-built and old, such as the National Weather Service's graphical forecast on digital.weather.gov and Derby City Council's public map, which reports a 2.14 development build.
Sales Signal: an OpenLayers 2 detection on a government or utility portal is a dated, specific upgrade project. GIS consultancies can open with the version number and the 2013 date.
Who uses it on purpose
Public bodies are the deliberate core. Government Administration is the top industry at 9.15% (336 companies), and the named list shows why: the FAA's Airport Data and Information Portal (OpenLayers 6.5.0), Philadelphia's property search (6.12.0), Barcelona's city guide (5.3.0), the Turkish postal service's branch finder (7.4.0), Somerset Council next to Astun Technology's iShare maps, and Indonesia's disaster agency BNPB on inaRISK. Deutsche Börse runs 5.3.0 on its corporate site. Real Estate (8.25%) leans on vendors: Spanish listing sites built on the Mobilia Gestión CRM load the same OpenLayers 5 build, and Mobilia's asset host appears on 213 OpenLayers domains in our script logs. By size, 65.03% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees, but 107 have more than 1,000, and that's where the deliberate GIS portals sit. OpenLayers is an open-source project with no customer list of its own, so every name here comes from our detection.
Sales Signal: filter Government Administration, Higher Education and Utilities above 200 staff. That's the slice where an OpenLayers detection points at an in-house GIS team or a GIS contractor.
Industry and geography
Germany has 1,604 of the 4,742 matched companies (33.83%), more than three times the United States (453). Several routes add up to that lead. German municipal sites on TYPO3 load one shared OpenLayers asset from a common extension, the OSM WordPress plugin is common on German small-business sites, and a regional jobs-portal network draws its maps with OpenLayers. Spain (362) has Mobilia's listing sites and Brazil (334) has web-radio stations. Our third-party script logs cover 3,618 of the 7,123 live domains, and in them radio site builders such as BRLOGIC and Brascast appear on 443 OpenLayers domains (12.24%), which fits Broadcast Media Production and Distribution reaching 3.54% of matched companies.
Sales Signal: in Germany, target municipalities and regional authorities directly. In Brazil and Spain the useful contact is the platform vendor, not the station or the estate agent.
Overlap with other map libraries
Our switching table for OpenLayers is empty because no pair passed our tests: most domains that ever ran OpenLayers with a rival still run both. 806 domains run it with Leaflet today, out of 1,021 ever seen with both. For Google Maps the figures are 733 of 896, for Mapbox GL JS 79 of 107 and for OpenStreetMap 49 of 60. A portal with an OpenLayers GIS viewer and a Google Maps embed on its contact page isn't switching anything.
"806 of the 1,021 domains we've seen with OpenLayers and Leaflet still run both. On public-sector sites, map libraries pile up. They rarely replace each other." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: pitch consolidation, not replacement: one supported map stack for sites carrying two or three.
The stack around it
Across the 7,119 live OpenLayers domains in our stack analysis, jQuery runs on 89.25% and jQuery UI on 41.16%, a classic front end. WordPress is on 43.98%, TYPO3 on 7.54%, Directorist on 5.28% and Drupal on 4.23%. Matomo is on 9.65% against Google Analytics' 40.55%, and Microsoft ASP.NET on 7.53%, which marks the custom-built public portals.
Sales Signal: the ASP.NET and TYPO3 slices are where in-house or contracted developers maintain the map. The WordPress slice mostly runs whatever the plugin ships.
Key takeaways
- 7,134 domains in October 2026, #11 in Maps & Geolocation with 0.29%, and a floor, because bundled OpenLayers is invisible to our rule.
- About a third of detected domains still expose OpenLayers 2, mostly version 2.13.1 from 2013.
- Germany leads with 1,604 of 4,742 matched companies.
- Plugins and vertical platforms carry most of the visible base: the OSM WordPress plugin, Brazilian radio builders, Mobilia, Neshan and CampusTours.
- Government Administration (9.15%) is the deliberate core.
- No switching corridor. 806 domains run OpenLayers and Leaflet together.
Sales applications
Targeting: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter OpenLayers, keep Government Administration, Higher Education and Utilities, and exclude WordPress to drop most plugin installs.
Outreach: "Your public map still runs OpenLayers 2.13.1, a 2013 release of a line its maintainers mark as deprecated. We move WMS and WFS viewers to current OpenLayers without breaking the links people have bookmarked."
Competitive angle: the 806 sites running OpenLayers and Leaflet side by side maintain two map libraries, and they're the natural audience for one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses OpenLayers?
Mostly public bodies, universities and small firms whose site builder or map plugin ships it. Our October 2026 crawl finds OpenLayers on 7,134 domains, and Germany has 1,604 of the 4,742 we matched to a company. Named users include the FAA, the City of Philadelphia, Deutsche Börse, Barcelona City Council and Turkey's postal service PTT on its branch finder.
How many customers does OpenLayers have?
OpenLayers is free, so it has users rather than customers. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 7,134 domains, 4,742 of them matched to a company. That's a floor, because apps that bundle OpenLayers from npm leave no global or script name for us to read. Since March 2026, 1,670 domains have dropped it, and only 124 of those still run it elsewhere.
What is OpenLayers's market share?
0.29% of Maps & Geolocation, ranking #11, on 7,134 domains. Google Maps holds 78.04% and Leaflet 10.1% of the same category. The share understates OpenLayers twice over: the category mixes embedded map services with developer libraries, and our rule sees OpenLayers loaded as a script or a global, not current versions compiled into an application bundle.
What are the best alternatives to OpenLayers?
Leaflet is the closest: another free, open-source map library, on 246,886 domains in our data against 7,134 for OpenLayers. Mapbox GL JS (41,355 domains) suits teams building on Mapbox's maps, and Google Maps suits sites that want a hosted service. Many sites mix them: 806 domains run OpenLayers and Leaflet today, and 733 run it with Google Maps.
Which countries use OpenLayers the most?
Germany, by a wide margin: 1,604 of the 4,742 matched companies, against 453 in the United States. Spain (362), Brazil (334), France (319) and the United Kingdom (211) follow. German municipal sites and a WordPress map plugin drive the lead, while Brazil's count owes much to web-radio site builders that ship OpenLayers on every station's site.
What size companies use OpenLayers?
Mostly small ones by count: 65.03% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 84.22% have 50 or fewer. Only 107 have more than 1,000 staff. Several of the large ones we checked run OpenLayers on a deliberate GIS or data portal, such as the FAA's airport data portal and Indonesia's inaRISK disaster-risk site.
How old are companies that use OpenLayers?
Older than jQuery UI's: 36.53% of matched companies with a known founding year predate 2000, against 25.66% on our jQuery UI profile, and 9.46% predate 1960. The 2010s still lead at 32.68%, then the 2000s at 19.07%, while only 11.72% were founded in the 2020s. City councils and universities with long histories pull the tail back.

Is OpenLayers free to use?
Yes. openlayers.org describes it as completely free, open-source JavaScript released under the 2-clause BSD license, which allows commercial use as long as the copyright notice is kept. There is no paid tier. The costs sit elsewhere, in map tiles, data services and hosting, which some sites take from free sources such as OpenStreetMap and others buy from providers.
Which is better for me, Leaflet or OpenLayers?
Leaflet's site stresses simplicity, a core of about 42 KB of JavaScript and a large plugin catalogue. OpenLayers lists OGC map services and vector formats such as GeoJSON, KML and GML among its built-in features, which suits GIS work. On the live web Leaflet is far more common, 246,886 domains against 7,134, while OpenLayers leans to public-sector portals.
What are the differences between Google Maps and OpenLayers?
Google Maps is a hosted service: Google supplies the map, the tiles and the API. OpenLayers is a free library that draws maps from whatever tile or data sources you point it at, including your own GIS servers. Google Maps runs on 1,908,503 domains in our data and OpenLayers on 7,134, and 733 domains run both today, often on different pages.
Is OpenLayers still maintained?
Yes. The current release is OpenLayers 10.11.0, published on GitHub on 4 October 2026. The installed base lags well behind: 2,447 of the 7,162 domains we detected over 60 days exposed the OpenLayers 2 API, and 2,061 of them reported 2.13.1, which openlayers.org dates to 9 July 2013. Bundled current versions are mostly invisible to us, so the true mix is newer.
Is OpenLayers 2 still supported?
No. Its GitHub repository is labelled "OpenLayers v2 - deprecated!", and its final release, 2.13.1, dates from 9 July 2013. It still runs on 2,447 of the 7,162 domains we detected over 60 days, including CampusTours campus maps, the National Weather Service's graphical forecast and WordPress sites using the OSM plugin, which loads 2.13.1 next to a current build.
What is the best JavaScript library for interactive maps?
By live usage in our data, Leaflet: 246,886 domains, against 41,355 for Mapbox GL JS and 7,134 for OpenLayers. Google Maps is bigger still at 1,908,503, but it's a hosted service rather than a library you run yourself. OpenLayers leans to GIS-heavy work, which is why government agencies make up 9.15% of its matched companies.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect OpenLayers?
We count a site when a page exposes the OpenLayers 2 global or the ol object from a full OpenLayers build, or loads a script whose address contains "openlayers". That catches CDN and self-hosted script tags, WordPress plugins and site builders. Current OpenLayers imported from npm and bundled into an app leaves none of those traces, so our 7,134 domains are a floor.
