Companies Using OpenStreetMap

Our October 2026 crawl finds an embedded OpenStreetMap map on 6,331 live domains. That's a narrow measure. We count the map iframe from openstreetmap.org's share tool, usually a small location map on a homepage. Sites that draw OpenStreetMap data through Leaflet or another library aren't counted, so treat it as a floor. Below is the list of companies that use OpenStreetMap this way, including TU Darmstadt's physics department, the Pullman Istanbul hotel, the Colombian broadcaster Telepacífico and the University of Basel's IT services.

Germany leads with 1,624 matched companies, more than five times the United States (291), the reverse of Google Maps' profile, and 74.65% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff. OpenStreetMap ranks 12th of 66 in Maps & Geolocation with 0.26%. One UK takeaway-ordering platform accounts for at least 835 of the domains.

OpenStreetMap Usage Statistics

OpenStreetMap embeds read 4,266 domains in June 2026, 5,005 in July, 5,377 in August, 6,007 in September and 6,331 in October. Part of that rise is on our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Part of it is one publisher. Newsquest's local-newspaper business directories swapped Google Maps for OpenStreetMap between 2 and 4 October, adding 114 domains, about a third of the 324-domain rise from September to October.

List of Companies Using OpenStreetMap

Who uses OpenStreetMap? This list of companies that use OpenStreetMap names 50 of the 4,263 matched companies, the largest by LinkedIn following. We opened every one in October 2026, and 47 showed an openstreetmap.org map on the page; the other three blocked our browser, timed out or showed no map on the pages we tried. Many are single departments or sites: TU Darmstadt's physics faculty, the University of Basel's IT services, The Herald's business directory in Glasgow. We removed one row, a casino.

Which Countries Use OpenStreetMap the Most?

Which countries use OpenStreetMap the most? Germany, with 1,624 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (428), France (326) and the United States (291). That's more than five German companies for every American one, while on Google Maps' profile the United States outnumbers Germany almost seven to one (332,829 to 48,931). Switzerland (76) and Austria (62) take the German-speaking total to 1,762. Privacy is the likely reason: German data-protection guidance says a Google Maps embed needs the visitor's consent before it loads and names OpenStreetMap as a European option (Dr. Datenschutz, 2021). Our data shows the pattern, not the cause.

OpenStreetMap Market Share Among Maps & Geolocation

What is OpenStreetMap's market share? 0.26% of Maps & Geolocation, 12th of the 66 technologies we track there, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The share understates OpenStreetMap, because it counts only openstreetmap.org embeds. Google Maps leads the table with 78.04% (1,908,503 domains). Leaflet is second with 10.1% (246,886), and its own examples load OpenStreetMap tiles. OpenStreetMap's 6,331 sits 803 domains behind OpenLayers (7,134), so the rank could change on a monthly refresh.

OpenStreetMap Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use OpenStreetMap? Very small ones. 74.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 18.36% have 11 to 50, so 93.01% have 50 staff or fewer. That's smaller than Google Maps' profile (65.36% at 1 to 10) or Leaflet's (62.27%). Only 21 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and 8 of the 12 such companies in our list are universities or public bodies, such as TU Darmstadt and the University of National and World Economy in Sofia.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (36.16%), then the 2020s (20.99%) and the 2000s (16.51%). Older firms are well represented too: 11.16% date from the 1990s and 5.73% from before 1960, among them Tashkent State University of Economics (1931) and the University of Agriculture in Kraków (1953).

What Industries Use OpenStreetMap the Most?

Restaurants lead at 6.85%, then Real Estate (6.01%), Medical Practices (4.62%), Construction (4.49%) and Retail (4.2%), based on our enriched company data. These are businesses whose address matters to their customers, which is what a location map is for. No industry reaches 7%, and the top ten add up to about 41%.

Restaurants using OpenStreetMap are the largest matched group (212), and the ones we couldn't match to a company outnumber them: at least 835 domains are UK takeaways on Feed Me Online, an ordering platform whose site template puts an OpenStreetMap embed on each takeaway's homepage. Universities using OpenStreetMap include TU Darmstadt, the University of Basel and the Université de Tours. Hotels on OpenStreetMap include Pullman Istanbul and Le Mirador in Switzerland.

OpenStreetMap Alternatives & Competitors

Google Maps holds 78.04% of this table, but it isn't a clean rival for a map embed: 281 domains run both today, out of 776 ever seen with both. Mapbox GL JS (1.69%), Apple MapKit JS (1.2%) and OpenLayers (0.29%) are developer libraries rather than paste-in embeds. The closest relative is Leaflet (10.1%), which loads OpenStreetMap tiles in its own examples; 3.4% of OpenStreetMap-embed domains load Leaflet too, based on our crawl of the category.

OpenStreetMap Customer Migration

Did sites switch from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap? Some did, and one publisher is a large part of it. 398 domains dropped Google Maps while running an OpenStreetMap embed since March 2026 (205 in the last 30 days, 351 in 90), against 64 that went the other way. 114 of the 398 are Newsquest local newspapers, whose business directories swapped maps between 2 and 4 October. Without them, 284 domains switched, 91 in the last 30 days, mostly small firms with no common owner. These are domains, not companies.

Expert Analysis: OpenStreetMap Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Sophie Clarke
Sophie ClarkeProduct Marketing Manager, TechnologyChecker

I came to OpenStreetMap from the Google Maps side of our data, expecting a privacy niche. It's that, and two other things I didn't expect. A domain counts here when a page on it embeds a map iframe or script from www.openstreetmap.org. Our October 2026 crawl finds 6,331 live domains, 4,263 matched to a company. I opened 20 random ones and all 50 listed companies in a browser: the embed was there on 20 of 20 and 47 of 50, and every embed we found sat on the homepage.

A floor, not all of OpenStreetMap

This page counts the paste-in map from openstreetmap.org's Share panel and nothing else. A site that shows OpenStreetMap data through a library with its own tiles isn't here; Leaflet, whose own examples load OpenStreetMap tiles, has its own page at 246,886 domains. So the 6,331 are the owners who took the simplest route, a pasted iframe with no API key and no bill.

Sales signal: these owners picked a free map with no account behind it. A pitch built on mapping features won't land; a pitch about what the map sits next to (contact forms, booking, reviews) might.

Two cohorts inside the count

The first is a platform. At least 835 domains, about 13% of the count, are UK takeaways on Feed Me Online, an ordering service run by Action Prompt Ltd. Its template puts an OpenStreetMap embed on the takeaway's homepage, under titles such as "Pleck Balti Walsall WS2 | Up to 10% Off!", and all nine Feed Me Online sites we checked had one. The takeaways didn't choose OpenStreetMap; the platform did. The same template explains why Masonry (21.71%), Isotope (20.14%) and OWL Carousel (20.02%) sit so high in the stack. The second is a publisher. 114 domains are Newsquest local newspapers, whose business directories on leap subdomains, such as leap.oxfordmail.co.uk and leap.heraldscotland.com, show an OpenStreetMap map.

Sales signal: dedupe by platform before you count accounts. To reach 835 takeaways, talk to Feed Me Online, not to each shop.

Growth

The chart reads 4,266 domains in June 2026, 5,005 in July, 5,377 in August, 6,007 in September and 6,331 in October. Some of that is ours: the domains we crawl turn over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection signals widen over time. Some of it is Newsquest. All 114 of its directory domains were first seen with OpenStreetMap in October, about a third of September to October's rise of 324. Since March 2026, 560 domains have dropped the embed from at least one hostname, and 56 of those still run it on another.

"Strip out one takeaway platform and one newspaper group, and what's left leans hard towards small German businesses." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: don't read the October step as a market moving. One publisher's template change made a third of it.

Who embeds it

74.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, more than on Google Maps' profile (65.36%) or Leaflet's (62.27%). Restaurants (6.85%), real estate (6.01%), medical practices (4.62%) and construction (4.49%) lead the industries. The bigger names are mostly universities and public bodies, often on one department's site: TU Darmstadt's physics faculty, the University of Basel's IT services, the Université de Tours' faculty of letters, the Province of Perugia.

Sales signal: for local SEO, listings or booking tools, an OpenStreetMap embed marks a small business that handles its own website and has already put its address front and centre.

The German lead

Germany has 1,624 matched companies, the United Kingdom 428, France 326 and the United States 291. On Google Maps' profile the United States outnumbers Germany almost seven to one (332,829 to 48,931). Here Germany leads by more than five to one. Austria and Switzerland add 138. The likely reason is privacy. German guidance such as Dr. Datenschutz's 2021 article says a Google Maps embed needs consent before it loads and names OpenStreetMap as a European option. An OpenStreetMap iframe still calls OSM's servers, though, so it isn't consent-free by default.

Sales signal: for consent-management and privacy vendors, a German site with an OpenStreetMap embed is an owner who has already changed a tool for privacy reasons. Usercentrics runs on only 2.3% of these domains, and CookieYes on 1.8%.

Google Maps switching

Since March 2026, 398 domains dropped Google Maps while running an OpenStreetMap embed, 205 of them in the last 30 days and 351 in 90, against 64 that went the other way. That's the one switching row we publish, and it needs an asterisk: 114 of the 398, all in the last 30 days, are Newsquest's directories, which swapped maps between 2 and 4 October. Without them, 284 domains switched, 91 in the last 30 days, scattered small firms with no common owner. 281 domains still run both maps, out of 776 ever seen with both. The Leaflet pair fails our switching test, because about two in three domains ever seen with both still run both.

"The Google Maps to OpenStreetMap flow is real but small. Take out Newsquest and it's 284 domains since March, from small firms with nothing else in common." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a site that dropped Google Maps in the last 30 days has been edited recently, so someone is working on it. That's a short window to offer whatever else belongs next to the map.

The stack around it

WordPress runs on 24.79% of live OpenStreetMap domains, Elementor on 5.18%, Joomla on 2.78% and TYPO3 on 1.37%. Google Analytics is on 33.87%. Google Maps still loads on 4.28% and Leaflet on 3.4%. These shares are of the 6,558 domains in our cleaned live set.

Sales signal: WordPress agencies and hosting providers will find these owners on familiar ground; a quarter of the list runs WordPress.

Key takeaways

1. 6,331 live domains embed an openstreetmap.org map, a floor of OpenStreetMap use.

2. Germany leads with 1,624 matched companies, the reverse of Google Maps' country mix.

3. One takeaway platform (at least 835 domains) and one newspaper group (114) sit inside the count.

4. 398 domains moved from Google Maps, 114 of them one publisher; 64 went the other way.

5. 93.01% of matched companies have 50 staff or fewer.

How to use this list

Filter by country and exclude the Feed Me Online and Newsquest domains before you count accounts. OpenStreetMap has no customers in the usual sense, because the map and data are free. What we can count is websites embedding its map: 6,331 live domains in October 2026, 4,263 matched to a company. That's a floor, as sites drawing OpenStreetMap data through Leaflet or other libraries aren't included. Since March 2026, 560 domains have dropped the embed from at least one hostname.

What is OpenStreetMap's market share?

0.26% of Maps & Geolocation, 12th of the 66 technologies we track there, on 6,331 domains. That only measures openstreetmap.org embeds. Google Maps leads the category at 78.04%, and Leaflet, whose own examples load OpenStreetMap tiles, is second at 10.1% with 246,886 domains. OpenStreetMap sits 803 domains behind OpenLayers (7,134), so the rank could change soon.

What are the best alternatives to OpenStreetMap?

For a paste-in map, Google Maps is the default, on 1,908,503 domains in our category table, though German privacy guidance asks for consent before it loads. Leaflet (246,886 domains) shows OpenStreetMap or other tiles with more control. Mapbox GL JS (41,355) and Apple MapKit JS (29,414) suit developers building styled, interactive maps rather than a simple location pin.

Which countries use OpenStreetMap the most?

Germany, with 1,624 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (428), France (326) and the United States (291). That's more than five German companies for every American one, the opposite of Google Maps' profile, where the US leads almost seven to one. Switzerland and Austria add 138 more. German privacy guidance on Google Maps embeds is a likely reason, not a proven one.

What size companies use OpenStreetMap?

Very small ones. 74.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 18.36% have 11 to 50, so 93.01% have 50 staff or fewer. That's a smaller profile than Google Maps' (65.36% at 1 to 10) or Leaflet's (62.27%). Only 21 have more than 1,000 staff, and in our list most of those are universities or public bodies.

How old are companies that use OpenStreetMap?

Among the OpenStreetMap domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (36.16%), followed by the 2020s (20.99%). That matched subset is drawn from 4,263 companies and is not representative of all 6,331 detected domains. This suggests OpenStreetMap is most popular among relatively young companies.

What is the ideal customer profile for OpenStreetMap?

The ideal OpenStreetMap customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (74.65%), then 11-50, Location: Germany, then UK, France, United States, Founded: 2010-2019 (36.16%), Industry: Restaurants, real estate, medical practices, Typical use: A location map on a small business homepage — based on our analysis of 4,263 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Is OpenStreetMap free?

Yes. The data is open under the Open Database License, and you can embed the standard map without paying, as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors. The free tile servers come with no promise, though. The OSM Foundation's tile policy says availability is best effort with no SLA, and that access can be blocked without notice if usage degrades the service.

How much does OpenStreetMap cost?

Nothing, for the data or a simple embed. The limits show up at scale. The OSM Foundation's tile policy calls its servers best effort, forbids bulk downloading tiles and warns that commercial services should be especially aware access may be withdrawn at any point. A busy app may need another tile source. All 6,331 domains on this page use the free openstreetmap.org embed.

Is OpenStreetMap better than Google Maps?

For a simple location map, some site owners clearly think so. Since March 2026, 398 domains dropped Google Maps while running an OpenStreetMap embed, against 64 the other way. But 114 of the 398 are one publisher, Newsquest, switching its local-newspaper directories in early October. Google Maps still leads the category with 78.04%, and 281 domains run both.

What is OpenStreetMap used for?

It's an open map of the world, built by a community of contributors, and its data feeds thousands of websites, apps and devices. On the websites we track it does one plain job, the location map. In a random sample of 20 OpenStreetMap domains, all 20 showed the openstreetmap.org embed on the homepage, for example an estate agent, optician, roofer or takeaway marking its address.

Is OpenStreetMap legal?

Yes. Its data is published under the Open Database License: you may copy, share and adapt it if you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors, and if you distribute something built on the data, it must carry the same licence. For the map itself, the OSM Foundation's tile policy asks for visible attribution, usually bottom right, and forbids bulk downloading tiles.

Who pays for OpenStreetMap?

The project is supported by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, an international not-for-profit. Its site asks for donations, sells individual membership at £15 a year, free for active contributors, and lists corporate members. Website owners who embed the map pay nothing, which suits the people on this page: 74.65% of matched companies have 10 or fewer employees.

Why do so many German websites embed OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps?

We can't prove why, but privacy is the likely reason. German data-protection guidance, such as a 2021 Dr. Datenschutz article, says a Google Maps embed needs the visitor's consent before it loads, and names OpenStreetMap as a European alternative. Germany has 1,624 matched OpenStreetMap companies, more than five for every American one. An OpenStreetMap embed still sends visitors' IP addresses to OSM's servers.

How do I embed OpenStreetMap on my website?

On openstreetmap.org, open the Share panel and choose HTML; you can tick Include marker to pin your address. It gives you an iframe pointing at openstreetmap.org/export/embed with your map's bounding box. That iframe is what we count on the 6,331 domains here. For styled maps or many markers, sites use a library such as Leaflet instead.
