Companies Using Mapbox GL JS

I'm Elif Arslan, CMO and co-founder of TechnologyChecker.io. Before writing this page I asked our team one question: when our crawl says a site uses Mapbox GL JS, is that site a Mapbox customer? Mostly, but not always. Our rule looks for the library itself, meaning its script, its stylesheet, the map elements it draws and its version global. The October 2026 crawl finds those on 41,355 live domains, 25,853 of them matched to a company. About one domain in five got the library from a website builder or a WordPress widget rather than from Mapbox.

Four routes onto a page

Split the 40,656 live domains in our clean set by how the library arrives and four groups appear. 17,270 (42.48%) load files from api.mapbox.com, Mapbox's own servers; these are the domains most likely to hold a Mapbox account and pay for map loads. 3,663 (9.01%) are Mono.net sites. Mono's map module loads Mapbox GL JS and Leaflet and draws with tiles from Mono's own map server, so no Mapbox account is involved. About 3,800 run the free OSM Map Widget for Elementor, which bundles Mapbox GL JS 1.12.0 and shows OpenStreetMap. The remaining two fifths or so are self-hosted copies and apps that bundle the library into their own code.

Sales signal: if you sell against Mapbox or alongside it, start with the 17,270 domains loading from api.mapbox.com. A Mono.net hairdresser or an Elementor site with a free OpenStreetMap widget isn't paying Mapbox and won't care about Mapbox pricing.

A flat line since September

The chart reads 33,373 in June, 37,334 in July, 38,740 in August, 41,356 in September and 41,355 in October. Part of the rise is ours, because the domains we crawl turn over every month and our detection widens over time, so I read June to September as a trend rather than a burst of new maps. September to October is flat to within one domain. 7,160 domains have had Mapbox GL JS drop off at least one hostname since March 2026, and about 1,900 of those still run it on another, so the number of sites that left entirely is closer to 5,200.

Sales signal: treat this as a stable pool of about 41,000 domains with a core of roughly 17,000 served by Mapbox. There's no growth story here to put in a pitch.

Who the customers are

60.28% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 23.91% have 11 to 50. The 2010s are the largest founding decade at 35.66%, and 6.47% predate 1960. 479 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and most use Mapbox GL JS for one job. Branch and store finders are the biggest group: Wells Fargo Advisors, City National Bank, Old National, National Bank of Canada, Videotron, Maurices and MOD Pizza all run it on a locator subdomain. Universities use it for campus maps, as UW-Madison, McGill and Loughborough do. AECOM, Club Pilates, F45 Training and Red Sea Global load it on their main sites.

Sales signal: at a large account the owner is whoever runs the locator or the campus map, often a digital or facilities team rather than central IT. Locator and local-search vendors should start with the locations. pages.

Property maps and European builders

Real Estate is the top industry at 10.42%, then Construction (5.53%), Hospitality (4.07%), Retail (3.33%) and Restaurants (2.91%). Mapbox courts property sites openly, with a page asking them to switch from Google Maps, and about 95% of the real-estate companies on this list sit outside the builder groups. Geography is where the builders show. Germany is second with 2,760 matched companies, and 1,209 of them are OSM Map Widget sites. Austria's 883 include 715 Mono.net sites, and Spain's 1,677 include 943.

Sales signal: the American and British companies here are almost all outside the builder groups. Before you use the German, Austrian or Spanish lists, filter out Mono.net and Elementor sites, or you'll be pitching small trades businesses whose map came with their website.

Switching: mostly flicker, one real flow

The switching table looks busy. 1,760 domains dropped Google Maps and kept Mapbox GL JS, 1,577 dropped Leaflet, and similar numbers went the other way, almost all of it in the last 30 days. Most of it is one group of sites. Of the 1,460 Leaflet drops in the last 30 days, 1,349 are Mono.net sites, and 1,317 of the same domains appear in the Google Maps row. Mono's map module loads both libraries and picks one depending on the visitor's browser, the likely reason its sites flip from one crawl to the next. On the other side, 1,456 of the 1,793 domains counted as moving to Leaflet still run Mapbox GL JS on another hostname.

The flow I'd call real is MapLibre GL JS. 117 domains dropped Mapbox GL JS and now run MapLibre, about 90 of them on every hostname, against 28 that went the other way. MapLibre continues the open-source 1.x code of Mapbox GL JS from before Mapbox released version 2.0 under its own terms of service on 8 December 2020. Two of the switchers we opened now load MapLibre 5.22.

Sales signal: old installs are the opening. 10 of the 22 pages in our random sample that load the library from Mapbox's servers still request a 0.x or 1.x release. For MapLibre-based tile providers that's a migration list; for Mapbox it's an upgrade conversation. Don't treat the Google Maps and Leaflet rows as churn.

The stack around it

These percentages are of the 40,656 live domains in our clean set. WordPress runs on 43.02% and Elementor on 20.04%, Mono.net on 9.01% and GoDaddy Website Builder on 3.8%, and GoDaddy hosts 17.98%. App frameworks are the minority, with React on 7.89%, Vue.js on 6.86% and Next.js on 3.6%. No booking tool reaches 0.1%, so the hotels and restaurants here probably use the map to show where they are rather than to take bookings.

Sales signal: the typical Mapbox GL JS site is a WordPress or builder site with one map on a contact or locations page. Agencies and WordPress plugin vendors will find more fit here than developer-tool companies.

What it costs

Mapbox's pricing page (checked 10 October 2026) bills Mapbox GL JS by map load. The first 50,000 a month are free, then it's $5.00 per 1,000 up to 100,000, $4.00 up to 200,000, $3.00 up to 1,000,000 and $2.50 up to 5,000,000. A map load is one map initialised on a page, with its tile requests included. Since version 2.0, Mapbox's terms allow the library only with a Mapbox account.

Sales signal: a small site with one contact-page map stays inside the free tier. The paying accounts are high-traffic locators, property search and travel sites, so qualify on traffic before you qualify on the technology.
