Google shut Optimize down on 30 September 2023, and our October 2026 crawl still finds its snippet on 19,968 live domains. The code still loads. We opened 56 random Optimize domains in a browser: 45 fetched optimize.js, and Google answered every one with a working file, a Tag Manager container whose Optimize tags are paused or missing, so no test runs. Below is the list of companies that use Google Optimize in that sense, sites still carrying the tag, with size, country, industry and stack. It includes Tyson Foods, Steelcase, LCBO and Equinix's investor site.

That still puts Optimize 5th of the 33 tools we track in A/B Testing & Experimentation, with 3.5% of the category. Most of these sites are small: 48.95% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff. For them the tag is dead weight, about 89 to 116 KB of compressed JavaScript on every page view. On 6 of the 45 pages, Google's anti-flicker snippet still hides the page until that file arrives.

Google Optimize Usage Statistics

Google Optimize reads 17,530 domains in June 2026, 19,237 in July, 19,767 in August, 21,477 in September and 19,968 in October. None of the rises is adoption, because nobody has been able to set up Optimize since September 2023. They come from our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection widens over time. Removals are the real trend. Since we began tracking Optimize on 16 March 2026, 5,106 domains have dropped it, and about one in ten of those (513) still load it on another hostname.

List of Companies Using Google Optimize

Who uses Google Optimize? This list of companies that use Google Optimize names 50 of the 10,495 matched companies, each a domain whose pages loaded the Optimize snippet in our October 2026 crawl. Read it as sites that never removed the tag. Most rows are one site's own old setup: where we recorded the container ID, 4,774 websites using Google Optimize carry 3,425 different IDs. The most widely shared ID loads on 196 of them, course sites hosted on the Graphy platform.

Google Optimize Market Share Among A/B Testing & Experimentation

What is Google Optimize's market share? 3.5% of A/B Testing & Experimentation, 5th of the 33 tools we track there, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Trident AB and Statsig lead the table, then VWO (8.4%) and Optimizely (8.03%), both live products. Convert is 6th on 14,609 domains, 5,359 behind Optimize's 19,968. Optimize's share is a stock of leftover tags, not a customer base, and it shrinks as sites clean up.

Google Optimize Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Google Optimize? Mostly small ones. 48.95% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 29.48% have 11 to 50, so 78.43% have 50 or fewer. 280 have more than 1,000 staff. At that size the leftover tag often sits on a side property: Farmers Insurance's agent finder, Staples' direct-mail pages, Equinix's investor site, the NFL's youth-football site.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (45.38%), then the 2000s (16.54%) and the 2020s (15.36%). A company founded after September 2023 could only pick the tag up from an old template or a platform that still adds it. 5.33% were founded before 1960, among them Steelcase (1912), LCBO (1927) and Tyson Foods (1935).

What Industries Use Google Optimize the Most?

Retail leads at 5.31%, then Software Development (4.5%), Advertising Services (4.11%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (3.86%), based on our enriched company data. No industry reaches 5.4%, and the top ten add up to 33.53% of matched companies. That's the spread you'd expect from a free tool that sat next to Google Analytics: whoever ran the website could switch it on.

Universities still loading Google Optimize include Howard University on its admissions site, Grand Canyon University on its student portal and the School of Visual Arts on start.sva.edu. Healthcare organisations with the Optimize tag include OHSU, Spire Healthcare and Nova Scotia Health's mental health site. Banks using the Google Optimize snippet include South State Bank in the US and Länsförsäkringar in Sweden.

Google Optimize Alternatives & Competitors

Google's shutdown notice pointed Optimize users to AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO, which it integrated with Google Analytics. Many sites added one and never took the old tag out. 1,097 domains run VWO and the Optimize snippet together today, out of 1,416 we've seen with both; for Optimizely it's 570 of 670, and for AB Tasty 72 of 89. Because most pairs are still in place, we don't count them as switches. Kameleoon (3,425 domains) wasn't on Google's list. The table isn't like for like: the other four rows are live products, and Optimize's row is tags with no service behind them.

Expert Analysis: Google Optimize Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Sophie Clarke
Sophie ClarkeProduct Marketing Manager, TechnologyChecker

I expected Google Optimize to be a ghost in our October 2026 crawl, three years after Google switched it off. It's still on 19,968 live domains. A domain counts when its pages load optimize.js from googleoptimize.com or create the google_optimize object, and today the first test does all the work. 10,495 of those domains match a company. Together they still rank Optimize 5th of 33 in A/B Testing & Experimentation, a place it holds because removing a tag takes someone's time and nothing on the page breaks if nobody does.

What the file does now

Google's notice says Optimize and Optimize 360 are no longer available as of 30 September 2023 and that experiments still running that day ended. So I checked what the tag does in practice. We opened 56 random Optimize domains in a headless browser. 45 fetched optimize.js, and Google answered every request with HTTP 200 and a file of 243 to 334 KB, about 89 to 116 KB compressed. The file is a Tag Manager container. In the five we downloaded, the Optimize tags are marked paused or the tag list is empty, and none of the 45 pages created the google_optimize object. The other 11 domains were bot walls, timeouts, dead hosts or sites that had already taken it out.

Six of the 45 also keep Google's anti-flicker snippet, which hides the whole page behind an async-hide class until the container loads. Because the file still arrives, the hide still ends early: we timed it at roughly 0.4 to 1.3 seconds on three sites. One Bulgarian shop left Google's placeholder ID, CONTAINER_ID, in the snippet. Nothing ever clears it, so the page stays blank for the full four-second timeout.

"Google turned Optimize off in 2023, but the script address never stopped answering. Every page that kept the tag still downloads a container with its tests switched off." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a site still loading optimize.js hasn't audited its tags since at least 2023. A CRO agency or testing vendor can confirm that in a browser in under a minute, which makes it a cheap, specific opener.

Removals are the trend

The chart reads 17,530 in June 2026, 19,237 in July, 19,767 in August, 21,477 in September and 19,968 in October. The rises can't be new users. They come from our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection widens over time. The removals are real. 5,106 domains dropped Optimize between 16 March and our October crawl, and only 513 of those still load it on another hostname.

Sales signal: treat this as a shrinking pool of about 20,000 domains. The sites still carrying the tag in late 2026 are often the least maintained, so qualify them on whether anyone still edits the site before you spend time on them.

Who still carries it

48.95% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 29.48% have 11 to 50. Founding years peak in the 2010s (45.38%). That fits sites built while Optimize was free and a click away inside Google's tools. The enterprise tail is real but narrow: 280 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and their tag often sits on a side property. Farmers Insurance has it on its agent finder, Staples on directmail.staples.com, Equinix on its investor site, the NFL on playfootball.nfl.com. Tyson Foods, Steelcase and LCBO load it on their main sites.

Sales signal: at a large account, the owner of that side property is your contact, not the central web team. At a small one, it's the founder or the agency that built the site.

Where the tags sit

The United States has 3,648 matched companies, India 818, the United Kingdom 774, Brazil 539 and Canada 515. No industry passes Retail's 5.31%. Two shared setups stand out in the container IDs. Graphy, an online-course platform, loads one Optimize container on 196 of the 4,774 domains where we recorded the ID; the three course sites we opened, pacelab.in, selfupgrad.com and courses.callishailee.com, all run on Graphy. eReleases, a press-release service, accounts for 115 domains with one identical page title, aliases such as mypr.com that redirect to ereleases.com. Neither is more than about 4% of what we can see, and the rest is spread thin: 4,774 domains carry 3,425 container IDs.

Sales signal: dedupe by container ID before you count accounts. For a platform like Graphy, one conversation covers every creator site that carries its container.

Replacements without the clean-up

Google's notice pointed users to AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO, which it integrated with Google Analytics. Our crawl shows many sites made that move and kept the old tag. 1,097 domains run VWO and the Optimize snippet together today, out of 1,416 we've seen with both since tracking began. For Optimizely it's 570 of 670, and for AB Tasty 72 of 89. Three in four or more of every pair are still in place, so this isn't switching in the usual sense. It's a new tool installed beside a dead one.

"More than a thousand sites run VWO and still load a Google Optimize tag that hasn't run a test since 2023. Nobody removed it because nothing broke." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: at most 1,739 Optimize domains run one of Google's three suggested replacements, under a tenth of the 19,968. The rest show none of them, which makes them the open field for any testing vendor. For VWO, Optimizely and AB Tasty account teams, a customer domain still loading optimize.js is a tidy-up worth raising at renewal.

The stack around it

The base here is the 20,539 live Optimize domains left after removing for-sale and gambling pages. Google Analytics runs on 92.34%. Google Tag Manager reads 99.41%, and part of that is Optimize itself: optimize.js is now built on Tag Manager and registers its container in window.google_tag_manager, the object our Tag Manager rule checks, as it did on four of the five pages I inspected. Microsoft Clarity runs on 23.53% and Hotjar on 17.8%. WordPress is on 34.08%, Elementor on 10.88% and Webflow on 3.13%. Consent managers are thin: OneTrust 4.98%, CookieYes 4.05%, Cookiebot 3.99%.

Sales signal: a free recorder on nearly a quarter of these sites and Hotjar on about a sixth say the interest in visitor behaviour didn't end with Optimize. Pitch testing to the Clarity and Hotjar sites first.

Key takeaways

1. 19,968 live domains still load a product Google shut on 30 September 2023, enough for 5th of 33 in A/B testing.

2. The file still downloads, about 89 to 116 KB compressed, and runs nothing. Six of 45 pages also hide their content until it arrives.

3. 5,106 domains have removed it since March 2026, so the pool is shrinking.

4. The sites are small and 2010s-founded: 48.95% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff.

5. 1,097 domains run VWO beside the dead tag, 570 Optimizely and 72 AB Tasty.

How to use this list

Filter by company size and country, then check the site yourself: if optimize.js still loads, the tag audit is your opener. For the full list of 19,968 Google Optimize domains with company, size and stack data, explore TechnologyChecker.io. Our GA4 migration analysis found the same pattern with Universal Analytics tags that Google also retired in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Google Optimize?

Mostly small sites that never removed the tag. Larger names still loading it include Tyson Foods, Steelcase, LCBO, Farmers Insurance's agent finder and Equinix's investor site. None of them can run an Optimize test now.

None that can use it: Google says Optimize and Optimize 360 stopped working on 30 September 2023. Our October 2026 crawl still finds the snippet on 19,968 domains, 10,495 of them matched to a company. Since March 2026, 5,106 domains have removed it, and about one in ten of those still load it on another hostname.

What is Google Optimize's market share?

3.5% of A/B Testing & Experimentation, 5th of the 33 tools we track there, on 19,968 domains in October 2026. VWO (8.4%) and Optimizely (8.03%) sit just above it, behind Trident AB and Statsig. The figure measures tags left on websites, not a working product, and it falls as sites clean up: 5,106 removals since March 2026.

What are the best alternatives to Google Optimize?

Google's own shutdown notice names AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO, the testing tools it integrated with Google Analytics. Many Optimize sites already run one: 1,097 domains load VWO alongside the old snippet and 570 load Optimizely. Kameleoon and Convert are other paid options. Whichever you pick, remove optimize.js, because it no longer runs tests.

Which countries use Google Optimize the most?

The United States, with 3,648 matched companies, then India (818), the United Kingdom (774), Brazil (539), Canada (515) and Australia (395). The Netherlands follows with 380, ahead of France (228) and Germany (192). These counts cover the 10,495 Optimize domains we matched to a company, so they show where leftover tags sit, not where anyone is buying.

What size companies use Google Optimize?

Mostly small ones. 48.95% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 29.48% have 11 to 50, so 78.43% have 50 or fewer. 280 have more than 1,000 staff, and at that size the tag often sits on one side property, such as Farmers Insurance's agent finder or Equinix's investor relations site.

How old are companies that use Google Optimize?

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (45.38%), then the 2000s (16.54%) and the 2020s (15.36%). A company founded after September 2023 could only pick the tag up from an old template or a platform still adding it. 5.33% were founded before 1960, including Steelcase (1912), LCBO (1927) and Tyson Foods (1935).

What is the ideal customer profile for Google Optimize?

Nobody can buy Optimize, so read this as the profile of a site still carrying its tag: a company of 1 to 10 people (48.95% of matched companies), founded in the 2010s, based in the US, India or the UK, running Google Analytics (92.34% of domains) and often WordPress (34.08%). In practice, a site whose testing setup nobody has touched since 2023.

Does Google Optimize still exist?

No. Google's help page says Optimize and Optimize 360 are no longer available as of 30 September 2023, and experiments still running that day ended. optimize.google.com now redirects to that notice. The script address still answers, though: in October 2026 it returned a working file to all 45 pages we saw request it, and our crawl finds the snippet on 19,968 domains.

What replaced Google Optimize?

Nothing from Google. Its shutdown notice says it is investing in third-party testing integrations for Google Analytics instead, and names AB Tasty, Optimizely and VWO. Our crawl shows sites took that route without cleaning up: 1,097 domains run VWO and the dead Optimize snippet together today, 570 run Optimizely with it and 72 run AB Tasty with it.

What does Google Optimize do now?

It runs no tests. Optimize let marketers run A/B, multivariate and redirect tests on their pages. Today optimize.js still downloads, about 89 to 116 KB compressed, but the five containers we fetched in October 2026 hold paused Optimize tags or none at all. On the 45 pages that loaded it, none created the google_optimize object that experiments relied on.

How much does Google Optimize cost?

Nothing, and it can't be bought. Optimize had a free version that allowed a few experiments at a time and a paid tier, Optimize 360, for more, according to its Wikipedia entry. Both ended on 30 September 2023. The leftover snippet costs only page weight: about 89 to 116 KB of compressed JavaScript per page view on the pages we tested in October 2026.

Does the Google Optimize snippet slow down a website?

It can. Every page with the snippet still downloads optimize.js, about 89 to 116 KB compressed. Six of the 45 pages we tested also keep Google's anti-flicker snippet, which hides the page until that file arrives; we timed hides of roughly 0.4 to 1.3 seconds. One page still has Google's placeholder container ID, so it stays hidden for the snippet's full four-second timeout.

Should I remove the Google Optimize code from my site?

Yes. Optimize stopped running experiments on 30 September 2023, so the snippet only adds a download and, if you kept the anti-flicker code, a blank screen while it loads. Remove the optimize.js tag, the async-hide snippet and any Optimize tag in your Tag Manager container. 5,106 domains have done that since March 2026, and 19,968 haven't yet.
