Looking for companies that use NextAuth.js? We count websites, because NextAuth.js is free, ISC-licensed open source with no paying accounts. In our October 2026 crawl, 19,482 domains set its sign-in cookies, and 10,596 of them match a company record. Named sites include www.marksandspencer.com, www.generalmills.com, www.northropgrumman.com and LEGO's ideas.lego.com.

Our rule reads the __Host-next-auth.csrf-token and __Secure-next-auth.callback-url cookies. Those are version 4 names: Auth.js v5 renamed the prefix to authjs, so v5 sites don't appear here and 19,482 is a floor. NextAuth.js ranks #6 of 54 in Identity & Access (SSO/CIAM) with a 1.89% share, ahead of Clerk and Auth0.

NextAuth.js Usage Statistics

Our current crawl window shows 8,818 NextAuth.js domains in June 2026 and 19,482 in October. The monthly steps of 2,316, 5,151 and 3,190 domains, then 7 between September (19,475) and October, are not an adoption curve. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The steps reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect NextAuth.js with, rather than a surge or a stall in adoption.

One caveat applies to every month: the rule sees only v4 cookies, so a site that upgrades to Auth.js v5 leaves this count even though it still runs the same project.

List of Companies Using NextAuth.js

Our list of companies using NextAuth.js covers 10,596 organisations matched from 19,482 detected domains, a 54.4% match rate. Every size, industry and country percentage on this page describes that matched set.

Among the named brands that use NextAuth.js, the detected surface tells you who owns the code. Some carry it on the main site (www.marksandspencer.com, www.docusign.com, www.linklaters.com), others on a portal: myportal.internationalsos.com, myaccount.homegroup.org.uk, portal.lincare.com. Careers sites are a third pattern (careers.cartier.com, careers.kenya-airways.com), and those can be run by a recruiting vendor, so confirm who built a careers site before pitching the websites using NextAuth.js behind it.

Which Countries Use NextAuth.js the Most?

Which countries use NextAuth.js the most? The United States leads with 2,475 of the 10,596 companies we matched, about 3.2 times India's 780. Brazil (652) and the United Kingdom (581) come next, then France (372), Germany (333) and Canada (318). Indonesia (169) and Turkey (146) make the top fifteen ahead of Mexico (125). NextAuth.js is a free library, so the map follows where Next.js teams build rather than where a vendor sells.

NextAuth.js Market Share Among Identity & Access (SSO/CIAM)

What is NextAuth.js's market share? NextAuth.js holds 1.89% of the Identity & Access (SSO/CIAM) category and ranks #6 of 54, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The leaders, Facebook Login and Google Sign-in, are sign-in buttons that sit on top of an auth system rather than auth libraries. Against the developer auth tools in the table, NextAuth.js's 19,482 domains are 1.66 times Clerk's 11,729 and 3.2 times Auth0's 6,095, and the v4-only rule makes that a floor.

NextAuth.js Customers by Company Size & Age

Is NextAuth.js only for startups? It leans small. 58.11% of matched companies have 1-10 employees and 81.93% have 50 or fewer, based on 10,305 companies with a size band. Still, 857 companies have more than 200 staff, 299 of them above 1,000. Large companies run it on main sites as well as portals: Marks & Spencer and General Mills on their main sites, Lear on catalog.lear.com and Zalando on partner.zalando.com.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

45.03% of matched companies with a known founding year were founded in the 2020s and 30.43% in the 2010s, so 75.46% date from 2010 or later (7,002 companies have a founding year). The tail is old, though: 4.08% (286 companies) predate 1960, among them Marks & Spencer (founded 1884), Cartier (1847) and Linklaters (1838), all three verified on live pages.

What Industries Use NextAuth.js the Most?

Technology, Information and Internet leads at 9.53%, followed by Software Development (9.24%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.38%). Together those three make up 24.15% of matched companies. The ten charted industries add up to 40.68%, so most NextAuth.js companies sit outside them, based on our enriched company data.

Financial services companies using NextAuth.js are the largest group outside tech at 3.61% (364 companies), a fit for a library that guards logins: Schroders runs it on www.schroders.com and Elavon on its developer.elavon.com portal. Retail brands using NextAuth.js (2.98%) include Marks & Spencer on its main site and Zalando on its partner portal. Healthcare companies on NextAuth.js such as Lincare use it for patient sign-in on portal.lincare.com, based on our enriched company data.

NextAuth.js Alternatives & Competitors

Read the table as neighbours with different jobs. Clerk (1.14%) and Auth0 (0.59%) are hosted services, while NextAuth.js is a library that runs inside your own Next.js app. Okta (0.16%) and Amazon Cognito (0.02%) are identity providers, and NextAuth.js ships sign-in providers for both, as it does for Auth0, so a site can run one inside the other. The overlap stays small: 46 domains run NextAuth.js with Auth0 today and 28 with Clerk.

Tech Stack of NextAuth.js-Powered Websites

Based on our live crawl, Next.js runs on 98.02% of NextAuth.js domains, so the library is almost never seen outside its host framework. Tailwind CSS (78.61%), Radix UI (35.35%) and shadcn/ui (26.41%) show the front-end template common to new React apps, and Vercel hosts 40.41%, with Amazon Web Services on 16.00%. The percentages are of the 19,536 domains in the clean live set, not the headline.

Nuxt.js (2.10%) is less odd than it looks: sidebase's nuxt-auth module installs next-auth as the engine of its AuthJS provider, which may explain part of that slice.

Expert Analysis: NextAuth.js Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawling and detection systems at TechnologyChecker, and NextAuth.js is a library we only see because of what it does to a browser. As of our October 2026 crawl, 19,482 domains set its sign-in cookies and 10,596 match a company record, a 54.4% match rate. NextAuth.js is free and ISC-licensed, so this counts websites, not customers, and the way we see it limits what we can count.

What the cookies catch, and what they miss

NextAuth.js runs inside a Next.js app. When a page checks the session, usually a call to /api/auth/session as it loads, the library sets cookies, and our rule looks for two of them: __Host-next-auth.csrf-token and __Secure-next-auth.callback-url. Both names are documented in the NextAuth.js v4 options.

Three groups fall outside that rule. Auth.js v5, the rewrite, renamed the cookie prefix from next-auth to authjs, so v5 sites don't match. The __Host- and __Secure- prefixes only appear over HTTPS, because v4 drops them on plain HTTP. And a page that never calls the auth routes sets nothing. So 19,482 is a v4 floor. It's a big floor, though, because npm still serves version 4 as next-auth's latest release (4.24.15, published 20 July 2026), with v5 on a beta tag (5.0.0-beta.32).

Sales Signal: A company missing from this list may still run Auth.js v5, so don't read absence as "no NextAuth.js". Presence is the reliable signal: a domain here was on a v4 release when we last loaded it.

Growth trajectory

Our current crawl window shows 8,818 domains in June 2026, 11,134 in July, 16,285 in August, 19,475 in September and 19,482 in October. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The steps reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect NextAuth.js with, rather than a surge in adoption. October's flat reading, up 7 domains, is one to watch. Sites moving to Auth.js v5 or Better Auth would leave this count, but one month can't separate that from ordinary turnover.

1,874 domains have lost the signal on at least one hostname since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, and about one in ten of those still set it on another hostname. That's movement observed since March, not lifetime churn.

"Auth libraries are visible through side effects, and NextAuth.js renamed its side effect between versions. Any detector built on the old cookie names now counts one version, not the project." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Treat this list as the installed v4 base, and note the clock on it. In September 2025 the maintainers handed Auth.js to the Better Auth team, committed to security and urgent fixes, and recommended Better Auth for new work. Each team here will at some point weigh v5, Better Auth or a hosted service against staying put.

The companies behind the domains

The matched base leans small: 58.11% have 1-10 employees and 81.93% have 50 or fewer. Of companies with a founding year, 45.03% were founded in the 2020s and 30.43% in the 2010s. The large-company tail is real, with 299 companies above 1,000 employees, and we confirmed the cookies on live pages for many of the biggest names. Marks & Spencer, General Mills, Northrop Grumman, DocuSign, Royal Canin, Linklaters, Schroders and STADA load NextAuth.js on their main sites. Others keep it behind a portal: Zalando's partner.zalando.com, International SOS's myportal.internationalsos.com, Lincare's patient portal and Elavon's developer.elavon.com. Careers sites at Cartier and Kenya Airways carry it too.

Sales Signal: A main-site hit means a web platform team owns a Next.js app with authentication built in, and that team buys identity, security and observability tooling. A portal hit points to a product team. A careers-site hit may belong to a recruiting vendor, so check before you pitch.

Industry and geography

Technology, Information and Internet (9.53%), Software Development (9.24%) and IT Services (5.38%) make up 24.15% of matched companies. Financial Services comes next at 3.61%, ahead of Retail (2.98%) and Real Estate (2.79%). The United States leads with 2,475 matched companies, about 3.2 times India's 780, with Brazil (652) and the United Kingdom (581) behind. Indonesia (169) and Turkey (146) both make the top fifteen.

Sales Signal: Financial services is where an auth library's maintenance status matters most to a compliance team. With 364 financial services companies in the matched set, the Better Auth transition is a concrete reason to open that conversation.

Why this profile has no migration table

We tested NextAuth.js against Firebase, Supabase, Clerk, Auth0 and Okta, and every corridor failed our gates: most domains that ever had both still run both. The provider list explains part of that. NextAuth.js can sign users in through Auth0, Okta and Amazon Cognito, so a site running two of these may be using one inside the other. Today 369 domains run NextAuth.js with Firebase, 132 with Supabase, 46 with Auth0 and 28 with Clerk. Those are stacks, not switches.

"Two auth products on one domain often means one is the identity provider and the other runs the session. Counting that as a switch would invent churn that never happened." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Pitch hosted identity to these teams as an upgrade path, not a rescue. The overlap with Clerk and Auth0 is small, so for most of the 19,482 the decision is still open.

Reading the stack

Next.js runs on 98.02% of NextAuth.js domains, Tailwind CSS on 78.61%, Radix UI on 35.35% and shadcn/ui on 26.41%. Vercel hosts 40.41% and Amazon Web Services 16.00%. The Nuxt.js slice (2.10%) has a likely explanation: sidebase's nuxt-auth module installs next-auth as the engine of its AuthJS provider. These percentages are of the 19,536 domains in the clean live set, not the headline.

Sales Signal: This is a coherent buyer: React developers on Next.js, often deployed on Vercel and styled with Tailwind CSS. Developer tools that integrate with Vercel, and auth vendors with a Next.js SDK, can treat the list as pre-qualified.

How to use this list

Filter NextAuth.js to companies with 51 or more employees to move past solo builders; that band holds 18.07% of matched companies with a size, 1,862 in all. Then read the detection URL to tell a main site from a portal.

A workable opener: "Your sign-in on [surface] runs on NextAuth.js v4. Since Auth.js joined Better Auth in September 2025, the maintainers have committed to security and urgent fixes and recommend Better Auth for new projects. If you're planning the next step, here's how [product] fits."

Export the list from all 19,482 NextAuth.js domains and 10,596 matched companies on TechnologyChecker.io.

We find NextAuth.js's v4 cookies on 19,482 domains, and 10,596 match a company record. 58.11% of those have 1-10 employees, but the list reaches large brands: Marks & Spencer and General Mills on their main sites, Northrop Grumman, DocuSign and LEGO's ideas.lego.com. Technology, Information and Internet is the top matched industry at 9.53%.

How many customers does NextAuth.js have?

None in the paying sense, because NextAuth.js is free, ISC-licensed code. TechnologyChecker.io counts 19,482 domains setting its v4 cookies in October 2026, a floor that misses Auth.js v5. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 1,874 domains have lost the signal on at least one hostname, and about one in ten of those still set it on another.

What is NextAuth.js's market share?

NextAuth.js holds 1.89% of the Identity & Access (SSO/CIAM) category and ranks #6 of 54. The category mixes sign-in buttons such as Facebook Login and Google Sign-in with auth services and libraries. Among those, its 19,482 domains put it ahead of Clerk (11,729) and Auth0 (6,095), and v5 installs aren't counted at all.

What are the best alternatives to NextAuth.js?

The project itself points new work to Better Auth, whose team took over Auth.js maintenance in September 2025. Hosted options include Clerk (11,729 domains in our data) and Auth0 (6,095). Few sites mix them: 28 domains pair NextAuth.js with Clerk and 46 with Auth0, while 369 pair it with Firebase and 132 with Supabase, backends that sit beside an auth library.

Which countries use NextAuth.js the most?

United States leads with 2,475 matched NextAuth.js domains, followed by India (780), Brazil (652), United Kingdom (581), France (372). These are counts within the 10,596 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.

What size companies use NextAuth.js?

The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 58.11% of the NextAuth.js domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 10,596 matched companies, not of all 19,482 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (23.82%) and 51-200 employees (9.75%).

How old are companies that use NextAuth.js?

Among the NextAuth.js domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2020s (45.03%), followed by the 2010s (30.43%). That matched subset is drawn from 10,596 companies and is not representative of all 19,482 detected domains. This suggests NextAuth.js is most popular among relatively young companies.

What is the ideal customer profile for NextAuth.js?

The ideal NextAuth.js customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (58.11%), Location: US, India, Brazil or UK, Founded: 2010 or later (75.46%), Industry: Internet, software and IT services, Front-end Stack: Next.js (98.02%) + Tailwind CSS — based on our analysis of 10,596 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Is Next Auth deprecated?

No, but it's in maintenance mode. On 26 September 2025 the maintainers announced that Auth.js, formerly NextAuth.js, would be maintained by the Better Auth team, with security and urgent fixes continuing, and they recommend Better Auth for new projects. On npm, next-auth's latest tag still points to version 4 (4.24.15, July 2026), with v5 on a beta tag.

What is the latest version of Next Auth?

On npm, next-auth's latest tag points to 4.24.15 and its beta tag to 5.0.0-beta.32, both published on 20 July 2026, according to the npm registry. Version 5 is the Auth.js rewrite, and it renames the cookies from next-auth to authjs. Our rule reads the v4 cookie names, so the 19,482 domains we count run a v4 release or keep its cookie names.

Should I use better auth or next auth?

The NextAuth.js maintainers answered this themselves. When Auth.js joined Better Auth in September 2025, they recommended Better Auth for new projects and said existing apps can keep running Auth.js, which still gets security and urgent fixes. The installed base is still large: TechnologyChecker.io finds NextAuth.js v4 cookies on 19,482 domains in October 2026.

Is NextAuth.js free?

Yes. NextAuth.js is open source under the ISC licence, as its GitHub repository states, and there's no paid tier: it runs inside your own app with your own OAuth providers or database. Costs come from what sits around it, such as hosting. Vercel, for example, hosts 40.41% of the domains where TechnologyChecker.io detects NextAuth.js.

What does Next Auth do?

NextAuth.js adds sign-in to a Next.js app: OAuth providers such as Google or GitHub, email links, credentials, sessions and CSRF protection, all handled in the app's own API routes. That is also why we can see it. A session check against /api/auth/session sets cookies such as __Host-next-auth.csrf-token, and those cookies are what our crawl detects on 19,482 domains.

What is NextAuth used for?

Signing people in to Next.js apps, often on portals. We verified it on Zalando's partner portal, International SOS's myportal site, Home Group's myaccount site and Lincare's patient portal. Others load it on the main site, such as Marks & Spencer and DocuSign, where a session check runs as the page loads. Next.js runs on 98.02% of the domains where we detect NextAuth.js.

Do Auth.js v5 sites show up in this data?

No. Auth.js v5 renamed its cookie prefix from next-auth to authjs, according to its own migration guide, and our rule matches only the v4 names. So every v5 site is missing from the 19,482 domains we count, as are v4 sites that never call the auth routes on the page we load. Treat the figure as a v4 floor, not the project's full footprint.

How does TechnologyChecker.io detect NextAuth.js?

Our crawler loads each page and records the cookies it sets. NextAuth.js v4 sets __Host-next-auth.csrf-token and __Secure-next-auth.callback-url when a page calls its auth routes, for example a session check on load. If either appears, the domain counts. Those prefixed names only appear over HTTPS, so v4 sites served on plain HTTP are missed too.

Who maintains NextAuth.js now?

The Better Auth team. A GitHub announcement on 26 September 2025 said Auth.js, formerly NextAuth.js, would be maintained by Better Auth, and authjs.dev now carries a banner saying the project is part of Better Auth. The repository keeps its ISC licence, and npm still serves version 4 as next-auth's latest tag, which is the version our rule detects.
