Our October 2026 crawl finds the Video.js player running on 222,177 live domains, 135,802 of them matched to a company. Video.js is free and open source, so this counts sites, not paying accounts. The companies that use Video.js include Deloitte, IBM on its community site and Wipro, plus Cisco and Boeing through Brightcove's player, which is built on Video.js. Mux has stewarded the project since 2025, taking over from Brightcove.

One platform dominates the count. Weebly sites are 67.79% of it: Weebly's page script loads an old Video.js build with the page, video or not. We count a domain only where the player script runs, so we left out 555,169 domains whose stylesheets merely carry Video.js class names, Duda sites the largest group among them; the method is at the end of this page. Video.js ranks 4th of 86 in Video Players & Hosting with 6.03%.

Video.js Usage Statistics

One point: 222,177 live domains in October 2026, counted only where the Video.js player script runs. The running-player test uses version readings from the last 45 days, so we can't rebuild earlier months on the same basis. Exits are counted more widely: 121,824 domains dropped a Video.js signal on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026, stylesheet-only domains included, and about 13.5% of those (16,439 when we re-checked) still carry it on another hostname. The set of domains we crawl also turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen over time.

List of Companies Using Video.js

Who uses Video.js? This list of companies using Video.js shows 50 of the 135,802 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. Among the brands that use Video.js, two routes show up. Some host the library themselves: IBM's community site pulls 7.21.6 from cdnjs, and Disney's careers site loads 8.21.1 from Video.js's own CDN. Others run it inside Brightcove Player, which uses Video.js as its framework, as Boeing, Cisco and Mary Kay do. On these websites using Video.js, a Brightcove script beside the player is the quick way to tell the two apart.

Video.js Market Share Among Video Players & Hosting

What is Video.js's market share? 6.03% of Video Players & Hosting, 4th of the 86 technologies we track there on TechnologyChecker.io, on the running-player count. YouTube leads with 41.61% (1,531,855 domains), and MediaElement.js has 21.54% (792,969), carried mostly by WordPress. Plyr follows at 3.86%, JW Player at 0.58% and Flowplayer at 0.33%. Counted on every stylesheet that names its classes, Video.js would have 777,498 domains, so this share measures players that run, not CSS that ships with a site builder.

Video.js Customers by Company Size & Age

Is Video.js only for small businesses? By count, nearly: 75.35% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 92.28% have 50 or fewer, based on our analysis of 135,802 enriched companies. That's what a count led by Weebly sites looks like. At the other end, 1,393 companies (1.14%) have more than 1,000 staff, among them Deloitte, IBM, Cisco and Boeing, which run current 7.x and 8.x builds.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (42.93%), then the 2000s (19.17%) and the 2020s (13.01%). At the other end, 2,826 companies (5.82%) predate 1960, among them Siemens (1847), Coca-Cola (1892), IBM (1911) and Boeing (1916), all four running Video.js when we checked.

What Industries Use Video.js the Most?

Medical Practices leads at 5.2% (5,380 companies), followed by Retail (3.94%), Construction (3.8%), Individual and Family Services (3.28%) and Wellness and Fitness Services (2.75%). No industry passes 5.2%, and Restaurants (2.44%) and Non-profit Organizations (2.46%) both make the top ten. It's a list of small local businesses, which fits a count led by Weebly sites, based on our enriched company data.

Medical Practices5,380 (5.2%)
Retail4,072 (3.94%)
Construction3,928 (3.8%)
Individual and Family Services3,388 (3.28%)
Wellness and Fitness Services2,841 (2.75%)
Business Consulting and Services2,718 (2.63%)

Medical practices using Video.js (5,380) and retailers on Video.js (4,072) lead, and restaurants using Video.js (2,525) make the top ten, a sign of how many small Weebly sites sit in this count. Non-profits using Video.js (2,545) are close behind. The deliberate installs sit higher up the size range: Wipro runs Video.js 8.21.1 on wipro.com and Siemens Healthineers 7.14.3 on its corporate site, based on our enriched company data.

Video.js Alternatives & Competitors

Video.js sits 4th by share, behind YouTube (41.61%) and MediaElement.js (21.54%), based on our market share data at TechnologyChecker.io. MediaElement.js overlaps it the most, for a mechanical reason: Weebly's page script loads both libraries, so the Weebly sites that make up 67.79% of this count run MediaElement.js 2.9.5 as well. Plyr (3.86%), JW Player (0.58%) and Flowplayer (0.33%) are smaller. No pair passes our switching tests, because most domains that ever ran Video.js beside one of these rivals still run both.

How We Counted Video.js Sites

Our detection rule for Video.js has several clauses: the videojs JavaScript object, the player's markup, script requests to Video.js's CDN or cdnjs, and two stylesheet class names, .video-js and .vjs-big-play-button. The stylesheet clauses were the problem. They match any CSS written to style a Video.js player, even on pages where no player script loads. Duda ships those rules in the runtime stylesheet of every Duda site we loaded, HighLevel ships them with its Video element, and many WordPress and Moodle themes and slider plugins carry them too.

Before computing anything, we checked a random sample. Of 70 domains drawn from everything the rule matched, 62 loaded in a browser: 13 ran the Video.js script and 47 carried only its stylesheet. So we kept a domain only with a running-player signal, meaning a Video.js version reading in the last 45 days (the script reports its version when it runs), or Weebly or ClickFunnels, whose page scripts load the library without exposing a version.

The rule matched 777,498 live domains. We removed 555,169 with no running-player signal and 6,165 with a domain-for-sale or gambling page title, most of which were already in the first group, so 555,321 came out in all. Every chart and table on this page uses the remaining 222,177, and the category share (6.03%, 4th of 86) is computed on that figure. The usage chart has one point because earlier months can't be rebuilt on the same test, and the exit count (121,824 domains since March 2026) is still on the wider basis.

Expert Analysis: Video.js Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Elif Arslan
Elif ArslanCMO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

I expected the Video.js list to be media companies and product teams that chose an open-source player. They're in it, but they're the minority, and getting to them took a correction. Our crawl first matched Video.js on 777,498 live domains, because the rule also counts stylesheets that name its classes. When I opened 70 of those at random in a browser, 62 loaded and only 13 ran the Video.js script; 47 carried its stylesheet and nothing else. So this page counts the 222,177 domains where the player script runs, as of our October 2026 crawl, 135,802 of them matched to a company.

Weebly is two thirds of it

Weebly runs on 67.79% of the domains in this count. Its page script loads an old Video.js build, one that reports no version, along with MediaElement.js 2.9.5, on pages with or without a video. 11 of the 12 Weebly pages in my sample ran it, and two of them showed a player. Square Online sites, which we almost always detect as Weebly too, are 14.75%. WordPress (8.85%) and ClickFunnels (5.85%) follow, and the rest are sites where our crawl read a version from the running script.

Sales signal: a Weebly domain in this list is a Weebly customer first. If you sell video tools, filter Weebly out and work the versioned sites.

What we left out

Duda is the largest group we removed. Its runtime stylesheet included Video.js class names on every Duda site I loaded, and its runtime script fetches Video.js 5.11 from Video.js's CDN only when a page contains a Duda video widget. In the 40 days to mid-October, 312 of the 188,365 Duda domains we read reported a running version, and only those stay in. HighLevel's Video element, Moodle themes and slider plugins leave the same stylesheet-only trace.

Sales signal: stylesheet-only sites aren't Video.js users, but they are builder customers who could switch on a video widget. That's a Duda or HighLevel conversation, not a Video.js one.

Versions in use

The script reports its version, which is the clearest sign it ran. In the 40 days to mid-October, our crawl read one on 58,509 domains. 7.x leads with 21,316 and 8.x has 20,446, ahead of 5.x (9,039), 4.x (4,395) and 6.x (3,278). None reports 10.x yet.

Sales signal: the 16,712 domains on versions 4 to 6 run builds several major releases old. For a video platform or an agency, that's a concrete upgrade list.

Growth trajectory

There's one point on the chart: 222,177 domains in October 2026. The running-player test uses version readings from the last 45 days, so earlier months can't be rebuilt on the same basis, and I'd rather show one honest point than a line that mixes two definitions. Exits are counted on the wider basis: since March 2026, 121,824 domains dropped a Video.js signal on at least one hostname, stylesheet-only domains included, and about 13.5% of those still carry it on another. Later points won't be a same-domain comparison either, because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection widens over time.

"Three in four Video.js pages I opened carried its stylesheet and nothing else. Counting only running players cut the number by more than two thirds, and the page is more useful for it." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: track this count by version, not by total. A rising 8.x share means sites are upgrading; a rising Weebly share says nothing about video.

Who the customers are

75.35% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and only 1.14% (1,393) have more than 1,000. The large ones take two routes. Some host the library: IBM's community site loads 7.21.6 from cdnjs, Disney's careers site 8.21.1 from Video.js's CDN, Wipro 8.21.1 inside its own site code and Reliance Industries 7.20.3. Others get it inside Brightcove Player, which uses Video.js as its underlying player framework: Boeing (8.24.1), Cisco (8.23.4), Mary Kay (7.21.4) and Siemens's press site (8.23.0).

Sales signal: at a large account, a Brightcove script next to the player means an existing video platform contract. A self-hosted build means an in-house team owns playback, and that's who you talk to.

Industry and geography

Medical Practices leads at 5.2%, then Retail (3.94%), Construction (3.8%) and Individual and Family Services (3.28%), with Non-profit Organizations (2.46%) and Restaurants (2.44%) in the top ten. The United States has 76,667 matched companies, 64.3% of the 119,273 in the top 15 countries, ahead of the United Kingdom (10,256), Canada (7,423) and Australia (6,150). MediaElement.js, which WordPress carries, has a flatter map: the US holds 36.9% of its top 15.

Sales signal: the small-business end of this list is English-speaking clinics, shops and restaurants, mostly on Weebly. Pitch them on the website, not the player.

Overlap with other players

There's no migration table, because no rival passes our switching tests. MediaElement.js overlaps most, and for a mechanical reason: Weebly's page script loads both libraries, so two thirds of this count runs MediaElement.js 2.9.5 as well. YouTube embeds, Plyr, JW Player and Flowplayer also appear beside Video.js, and most domains that ever ran one of them with Video.js still run both.

"Video.js and Plyr show up as rivals in every comparison post. Since October 2025, Plyr's creator has been designing the skins for Video.js 10." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a site running Video.js beside YouTube embeds may be splitting its video between self-hosted files and YouTube. Ask which one it would keep.

The stack around it

Across the 222,177 live domains in our stack analysis, Cloudflare's CDN runs on 75.77%, Google Analytics on 64.41% and Snowplow Analytics on 62.84%, the last because Weebly's pages load it. Lodash (62.91%) and Underscore.js (62.87%) sit at almost the same share as each other. jQuery is on 82.17%, and Matomo reaches only 1.64%.

Sales signal: analytics tags here say more about Weebly than about the business. Use Matomo, or the absence of Weebly, as a filter for sites that chose their own stack.

Video.js today

Video.js is free under the Apache 2.0 licence. Brightcove led the project until 2025, when Mux took over as steward, according to videojs.org. Mux was founded by Steve Heffernan, who created Video.js, and the VIDEO.JS name is still a Brightcove trademark. In October 2025 Mux announced Video.js 10, a rewrite built with the people behind Plyr, Vidstack and Media Chrome, and the GitHub repository now lists v10 as stable. None of the domains reporting a version in our crawl runs 10.x yet.

Sales signal: v10 is a ground-up rewrite, so moving a 7.x or 8.x install to it is a migration project, not an update. That's agency work, and a reason for some teams to look at a hosted player instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Video.js?

Mostly Weebly sites: Weebly's page script loads Video.js, and they make up 67.79% of the 222,177 live domains where our October 2026 crawl saw the player run. The rest are sites that install it themselves. Verified users include Deloitte, IBM's community site, Wipro, Reliance Industries and Disney's careers site, plus Boeing and Cisco through Brightcove Player, which is built on Video.js.

How many customers does Video.js have?

None in the paying sense: Video.js is free under the Apache 2.0 licence. Our October 2026 crawl finds the player running on 222,177 live domains, 135,802 of them matched to a company. Another 555,169 domains carry only Video.js's class names in their stylesheets, Duda sites the largest group, and we leave those out because the player never loads there.

What is Video.js's market share?

6.03% of Video Players & Hosting on TechnologyChecker.io, 4th of 86 technologies, on the 222,177 domains where the player runs. YouTube leads with 41.61% and MediaElement.js has 21.54%. Plyr follows at 3.86%, JW Player at 0.58% and Flowplayer at 0.33%. Counting stylesheet-only sites as well would give Video.js 777,498 domains, but most of those never load the player.

What are the best alternatives to Video.js?

In our category table: MediaElement.js (792,969 domains), Plyr (141,925), JW Player (21,351) and Flowplayer (12,312), plus YouTube embeds (1,531,855). MediaElement.js and Plyr are free libraries; JW Player and Flowplayer are commercial platforms. Sites add players more often than they swap them: Weebly loads MediaElement.js and Video.js together, and no pair passes our switching tests.

Which countries use Video.js the most?

The United States, with 76,667 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (10,256), Canada (7,423), Australia (6,150) and Germany (3,772). The US holds 64.3% of the 119,273 companies in the top 15 countries, and the five English-speaking countries there hold 85.1%. The Netherlands (2,066), China (2,036), Italy (1,945) and France (1,796) come next.

What size companies use Video.js?

Mostly very small ones: 75.35% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 92.28% have 50 or fewer, which fits a count led by Weebly sites. 1,393 companies (1.14%) have more than 1,000 staff, and the large ones we checked, including Deloitte, IBM, Cisco and Boeing, run current Video.js 7.x or 8.x builds.

How old are companies that use Video.js?

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (42.93%), then the 2000s (19.17%) and the 2020s (13.01%), so most are established small businesses rather than startups. 2,826 companies (5.82%) predate 1960, among them Siemens (1847), Coca-Cola (1892), IBM (1911) and Boeing (1916), all four running Video.js when we checked them in October 2026.

What is the ideal customer profile for Video.js?

The ideal Video.js customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (75.35%), Location: United States, then UK, Canada, Australia, Founded: 2010s (42.93%), then 2000s (19.17%), Industry: Small local businesses: clinics, retail, construction, Where it runs: Weebly sites (67.79%), then WordPress and ClickFunnels — based on our analysis of 135,802 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Is Video.js open source?

Yes. Video.js is a free, open-source HTML5 video player released under the Apache License 2.0, according to its GitHub repository and videojs.org. The VIDEO.JS name is a Brightcove trademark, and Mux has held the project's stewardship role since 2025. Companies pay for hosting, streaming or a platform built on it, such as Brightcove Player, rather than for the library.

Does Video.js support HLS?

Yes. Since version 7, Video.js includes its HTTP streaming engine in the default build, which plays HLS and DASH even in browsers without native support, according to the videojs/http-streaming repository. In our crawl, 7.x and 8.x are the most common versions: 21,316 and 20,446 domains among those reporting a version in the 40 days to mid-October 2026.

What is a Video.js player?

It's an HTML5 video player built with the Video.js JavaScript and CSS library: a standard video element wrapped in Video.js controls, skins and plugins. We count a site when the Video.js script runs, not when a stylesheet only names its classes. Brightcove Player is a commercial product built on it, and Boeing, Cisco and Mary Kay use that route.

What is the best JavaScript video player?

There's no single answer, but adoption is one guide. In our October 2026 crawl, MediaElement.js runs on 792,969 domains, mostly through WordPress, Video.js on 222,177 and Plyr on 141,925. Video.js 10, a rebuild by the people behind Video.js, Plyr, Vidstack and Media Chrome, is now marked stable on GitHub, so it's the one to watch if you're choosing today.

What is Video.js 10?

A ground-up rewrite of Video.js, announced by Mux in October 2025 and built with the people behind Plyr, Vidstack and Media Chrome. Its GitHub repository now lists v10 as stable, with HTML and React versions. Our crawl doesn't show it yet: among domains reporting a version, none runs 10.x, and 7.x (21,316) and 8.x (20,446) are the largest groups.

Why aren't Duda sites counted as Video.js users?

Because most of them never run it. Duda's site runtime included Video.js's stylesheet rules on every Duda page we loaded, but the player script, Video.js 5.11, loads only when the owner adds a Duda video widget. Only 312 of the 188,365 Duda domains we read in the 40 days to mid-October reported a running version, so we count those and leave the rest out.

Do Weebly sites use Video.js?

Almost always. Weebly's page script loads an old Video.js build, with no version number exposed, together with MediaElement.js 2.9.5, on pages with or without a video. In our random sample, 11 of the 12 Weebly pages ran the Video.js script. Weebly sites are 67.79% of the 222,177 domains in this count, which is why it leans so small and English-speaking.

Video.js vs MediaElement.js: do sites switch between them?

Rarely in a way we can call switching. Weebly's page script loads both libraries, so most Video.js sites in this count run MediaElement.js too. The two differ in size and in who carries them: in our October 2026 crawl MediaElement.js runs on 792,969 domains, mostly through WordPress, and Video.js on 222,177, two thirds of them Weebly sites.
