Companies Using MediaElement.js

Our October 2026 crawl finds MediaElement.js on 792,969 live domains, 542,423 of them matched to a company. It's a free audio and video player under the MIT licence, so this counts sites rather than paying customers. The companies that use MediaElement.js include Apple, Costco and Airbnb, whose investor-relations sites run on Q4's platform, plus Heineken and Northwell Health's careers site.

One platform explains most of the count. WordPress runs on 79.3% of these domains: WordPress core ships MediaElement.js 4.2.17 and uses it for its audio and video shortcodes. Weebly sites add 14.93%, loading version 2.9.5 with the page. In a random sample of 59 pages that loaded, 56 loaded the script but only 16 showed a player. MediaElement.js ranks 2nd of 86 in Video Players & Hosting with 21.54%.

MediaElement.js Usage Statistics

MediaElement.js reads 663,825 domains in June 2026, 730,407 in July, 738,091 in August, 770,918 in September and 792,969 in October. The 66,582-domain step from June to July reflects changes on our side rather than a surge in adoption: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since July the line has added 62,562. 104,336 domains dropped MediaElement.js on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026, and about 14% of them (14,622 when we re-checked) still run it on another hostname.

Expert Analysis: MediaElement.js Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Elif Arslan
Elif ArslanCMO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

MediaElement.js is the player most of its users never chose. It sits in WordPress core, it loads with Weebly pages, and it loads on the investor sites of Apple, Costco and Airbnb through one investor-relations vendor. Our October 2026 crawl counts a domain when its pages expose MediaElement.js's mejs object, which gives 792,969 live domains, 542,423 matched to a company. I opened 69 domains drawn at random from the clean live set: 59 loaded, 56 loaded the script and 16 showed a MediaElement.js player.

WordPress ships it, and Weebly loads it

WordPress runs on 79.3% of MediaElement.js domains. WordPress core registers MediaElement.js 4.2.17 in wp-includes, and its video and audio shortcodes use it by default. A page loads it when it uses one of those, or when a theme or plugin enqueues it, which is why 40 of the 59 pages in my sample loaded the script without showing a player. Weebly adds 14.93%: its page script loads MediaElement.js 2.9.5, and all 10 Weebly pages in my sample ran it. WordPress or Weebly covers 742,000 of the 787,976 domains in the clean set, 94.2%.

Sales signal: for MediaElement.js, the platform is the buyer. Sell to WordPress agencies and Weebly site owners on their platform, and treat the player as a detail.

Frozen versions

The mejs object reports a version, and in the 40 days to mid-October our crawl read one on 755,810 domains. 510,676 run 4.2.17, the build WordPress ships, which npm dates to September 2021. 117,391 run 2.9.5, and 116,418 of those are Weebly sites. 4.2.16 has 25,957, 2.13.0 has 21,769 (almost all on WordPress), and 4.2.5 has 7,120, of which 6,892 are ClickFunnels pages. Only 3,201 domains run 5.x, 6.x or 7.x, though the project released 7.1.0 in November 2025.

Sales signal: the version is a platform fingerprint. 4.2.17 points to WordPress, 2.9.5 to Weebly and 4.2.10 to a Q4 investor site, so sorting the list by version sorts it by platform.

Growth trajectory

The chart reads 663,825 domains in June 2026, 730,407 in July, 738,091 in August, 770,918 in September and 792,969 in October. The 66,582-domain step from June to July is mostly on our side: the domains we crawl turn over each month, with dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens over time. Since July the line has added 62,562. 104,336 domains dropped MediaElement.js on at least one hostname since March 2026, and 14,622 of those still run it on another.

"Nearly three in four MediaElement.js pages I loaded never showed a player. WordPress and Weebly load it in case a page needs it, and that habit is most of the count." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: this line tracks WordPress and Weebly, not demand for players. Don't read a rising count as a market for a new one.

Who the customers are

68.06% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 4,789 (0.98%) have more than 1,000. The top of the company list belongs largely to one vendor. Of the 23 listed companies whose sites loaded MediaElement.js in my browser, 17 were investor or corporate sites on Q4's platform, which ships version 4.2.10: Apple, Costco, CVS Health, Airbnb, Boeing, ADP and Gap among them. Outside Q4, large companies use it through WordPress, as on Northwell Health's careers site (4.2.17), or through their own builds: Heineken runs 4.2.17 and FIS 4.2.16.

Sales signal: at a large company, MediaElement.js usually marks the IR or careers site, not the main web team. Q4's customers are a ready list for anyone selling into investor relations.

Industry and geography

Construction leads at 4.57%, then Advertising Services (3.42%), Business Consulting and Services (3.36%) and Medical Practices (2.67%). Nothing passes 4.6%. The United States has 159,823 matched companies, then Germany (40,662), the United Kingdom (38,345), Spain (29,189) and France (25,744). The nine European countries in the top 15 hold 199,501 companies, more than the US, which has 36.9% of the 433,579 in those 15 countries. For Video.js, the US share is 64.3%.

Sales signal: Germany, Spain, France and Italy hold 119,891 MediaElement.js companies between them. For a European WordPress agency or care-plan seller, that's a maintenance list sorted by country.

Overlap with other players

No rival passes our switching tests, so there's no migration table. Video.js overlaps the most, and mostly through one platform: 117,622 Weebly sites run both, because Weebly's page script loads both libraries. Plyr runs alongside MediaElement.js on 5,220 domains, Flowplayer on 1,125, Presto Player on 652 and JW Player on 479.

"Video.js and MediaElement.js share well over a hundred thousand sites, and almost none of those owners chose either one. Weebly loads both." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: Plyr (5,220 domains) or Presto Player (652) next to MediaElement.js suggests a site owner who added a second player on top of the default. Those owners have already looked past the default once.

The stack around it

Across the 787,987 live domains in our stack analysis, WordPress runs on 79.3%, the Divi theme on 24.44% and Elementor on 17.68%. jQuery is on 99.91%, because WordPress registers MediaElement.js with jQuery as a dependency and Weebly loads jQuery too, and jQuery Migrate is on 77.91%. Google Analytics runs on 57.28% and Site Kit on 6.61%. Hosting follows WordPress: GoDaddy 14.73%, Hostinger 5.47%, WP Engine 3.04% and Bluehost 2.51%.

Sales signal: with Divi on nearly a quarter of these domains, Divi agencies and Divi add-on sellers are a natural fit for this list.

The project today

MediaElement.js was created by John Dyer at Dallas Theological Seminary and is released under the MIT licence. It's free, there's no paid edition, and the project still publishes releases, with 7.1.0 the current one on npm. Its reach depends on what WordPress and Weebly choose to ship, not on those releases.

Sales signal: if WordPress changed its default player, this count would move by hundreds of thousands of domains. Watch WordPress core, not the MediaElement.js repository.

Is MediaElement.js free?

Yes. MediaElement.js is released under the MIT licence, which its GitHub README sums up as use everywhere and keep the copyright notice. There's no paid edition. What is a media element?

In HTML, a media element is an audio or video tag, and browsers control both through the HTMLMediaElement API. MediaElement.js mirrors that API so one player and one set of controls work across MP4, MP3, HLS, DASH and embeds such as YouTube and Vimeo. Our crawl detects the library by the mejs object it adds to the page.

Is MediaElement.js still maintained?

The project still publishes releases: npm lists 7.1.0, released on 12 November 2025. Few sites run them. Among the 755,810 domains where our crawl read a version, 3,201 ran 5.x, 6.x or 7.x. The rest run builds that platforms froze: 4.2.17 from WordPress (510,676 domains), 2.9.5 on Weebly (117,391) and 4.2.10 on Q4's investor sites.

Why does a site load MediaElement.js without showing a player?

Because platforms load it before it's needed. Weebly's page script includes it, and on WordPress any theme or plugin can enqueue it, not only a page with an audio or video shortcode. In a random sample of 59 MediaElement.js pages that loaded, 56 ran the script but only 16 showed a MediaElement.js player.

MediaElement.js vs Video.js: do sites switch between them?

Not in a way we can measure as switching. 117,622 Weebly sites run both, because Weebly's page script loads both libraries with the page, and no pair passes our switching tests. Size and carriers differ: in our October 2026 crawl MediaElement.js runs on 792,969 domains, mostly WordPress, and Video.js on 222,177 domains where its player runs, two thirds of them Weebly sites.

What is the best JavaScript video player?
