Companies Using Flowplayer

Flowplayer is a brand most video teams know, and since 2022 it has been part of Wowza. So I expected this list to be Wowza's player customers. It mostly isn't. Our October 2026 crawl counts a domain when its pages expose the flowplayer JavaScript object or load a script from releases.flowplayer.org. That gives 12,312 live domains, 6,548 matched to a company, 13th of 86 in Video Players & Hosting. The object exists in every generation of Flowplayer, and the version it reports tells you which one a site runs.

Four generations on one count

Of the 11,849 domains we detected in the past 45 days, 6,703 reported a version. 6,239 report 5.x, 6.x or 7.x, the HTML5 generations that came before the current player. Only 295 report a 3.x version (3.4 to 3.43), the line Wowza ships today from cdn.flowplayer.com; I checked one, the Finnish newspaper Keskisuomalainen, and it loads that player with its own account configuration. The 5,146 domains with no version include the Flash-era Flowplayer 3, whose script doesn't report one. In a random sample of 70 domains, 56 pages loaded Flowplayer: 12 used a Flowplayer 3.1 or 3.2 script, built to embed a Flash player, and none loaded the current one. Flash Player was discontinued at the end of 2020.

Sales signal: a version string is the best qualifier on this list. A site on 3.1 or 3.2 still loads a player built for Flash, which current browsers no longer run. That's an opener for a web agency or a video platform.

Who put it there

A lot of these sites didn't choose Flowplayer. At least 809 domains run FV Player, a free WordPress plugin by FolioVision that serves its own build of the player; they report versions 7.2.8 to 7.2.12 or 8.x, which Flowplayer's release server doesn't carry. About 760 domains are storefronts for small hosting resellers, built from one template that sells Hepsia-based hosting and ships Flowplayer 5.4.6 with no player on the homepage. eVetSites, which builds websites for veterinary clinics, loads Flowplayer 6.0.5 on about 470. 344 domains sit under .leg.br, the Brazilian legislative domain, mostly municipal councils on Plone; all four in our sample loaded Flowplayer through Plone's collective.flowplayer add-on. And 436 domains report 7.0.0, the version the four OptimizePress sites in our sample loaded from that WordPress builder's files.

Sales signal: before using this list, split it by carrier. The reseller storefronts are not video buyers. The vet clinics are eVetSites customers, which makes them a clean list for anyone selling to veterinary practices, not to video teams.

Growth trajectory

The chart reads 9,886 in June, 11,419 in July, 11,694 in August, 12,297 in September and 12,312 in October. The step from June to July is mostly our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection signals widen over time. Since September the line is flat. 1,815 domains dropped Flowplayer on at least one hostname since 16 March 2026, and 323 of those still run it on another hostname.

Sales signal: this pool isn't growing, and it won't shrink fast either. Old players leave when a site is rebuilt, so watch for redesigns.

Who the customers are

61.27% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees. Only 4.3% were founded in the 2020s, against 31.5% on Presto Player's profile, and 63.93% were founded before 2010. 160 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and they tend to run Flowplayer on a newsroom or portal. Xerox, Edison International and OHSU have newsrooms built on iPR Software that load Flowplayer 3.2.8, and Dunkin's and Baskin-Robbins' newsrooms load the same file. Endress+Hauser (7.2.7), Bavarian Nordic (5.3.2) and Stony Brook Medicine (5.5.2) run it on their main sites. Flowplayer's homepage quotes customers such as RTVS and JoVE, but neither is in our top 50, so every name here comes from our own detections.

Sales signal: at large accounts, the communications team owns the newsroom, and the newsroom vendor owns the player. Ask who maintains it before you pitch a replacement.

Industry and geography

Medical Practices leads at 3.05% and Veterinary Services is second at 3.01%, but 146 of the 157 vet companies are eVetSites sites. The ten industries charted add up to only 26.89%. Europe is the bigger market: the nine European countries in the top 15 have 2,223 matched companies, against 2,163 in the United States. Germany (715) has one for every three American ones.

Sales signal: for European video platforms, the German and French Flowplayer lists are worth more than the US one. They're older companies on older players, close to home.

Overlap with other players

Our switching tests found no corridor. 1,125 Flowplayer domains run MediaElement.js today and 831 run Video.js, out of 1,446 and 958 ever seen with both. JW Player overlaps on 273. Since March, 58 domains that dropped Flowplayer run Video.js and 30 went the other way. That's a lean toward Video.js, but on numbers this small I wouldn't call it a trend.

Sales signal: pitch a migration to the 6,239 sites on 5.x to 7.x as part of a site refresh, not as a player swap on its own.

The stack around it

Across 12,230 live domains, jQuery runs on 96.78%, Modernizr on 34.59% and FancyBox on 15.36%. WordPress is on 39.5%, with Plone (3.3%), DNN (2.02%) and TYPO3 (1.96%) behind it. Bootstrap (25.72%) and ZURB Foundation (11.14%) lead Tailwind CSS (4.65%). Google Analytics is on 50.99%.

Sales signal: these are maintenance-mode sites. Agencies selling rebuilds and accessibility or security reviews will find more fit here than video tools will.

What Wowza sells today

Wowza announced the acquisition on 6 September 2022. Flowplayer's pricing page (checked 13 October 2026) lists a Growth plan at $99 as a one-time purchase, with 320 viewing hours and 100 GB of storage, and quotes the Player Only and Enterprise plans.

Competitive angle: for Video.js-based platforms and JW Player, the sites on 3.x Flash scripts and 5.x to 7.x are open to a change, and very few run Wowza's current product.
