Companies Using JW Player
Our October 2026 crawl finds JW Player on 21,351 live domains, 11,022 of them matched to a company. The companies that use JW Player here include BMW Group on its press club, PwC across its member-firm sites, Televisa, Xylem and Wyndham's franchise site. The player now belongs to JWX, the company formed in 2024 when JW Player merged with Connatix, and jwplayer.com redirects to jwx.com.
One adjustment matters before you use the count. 6,041 domains, about 28%, are youth-sports club sites built on SportsEngine, whose site builder loads JW Player 6.12 on club pages whether or not they show a video. Many other sites run an old build too: in a random sample, 28 of the 42 pages that reported a version were on 5, 6 or 7. JW Player ranks 10th of 86 in Video Players & Hosting with a 0.5% share.

JW Player Usage Statistics
JW Player reads 17,227 domains in June 2026, 20,286 in July, 20,858 in August, 21,172 in September and 21,351 in October. We wouldn't read the 3,059-domain step from June to July as new installs. Counts are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since July the line has added 1,065 domains. 2,747 domains dropped JW Player on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026, and about 23% of those (633 when we re-checked) still run it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use JW Player the Most?
Which countries use JW Player the most? The United States, with 6,048 matched companies, then France (667), the United Kingdom (514), Canada (474) and Germany (458). France takes second place, ahead of the UK, and we found no single platform behind it: the French companies are spread across industries, and 457 of the 667 run PHP sites. The Netherlands (218), Australia (193), Italy (180) and Spain (177) follow, and Vietnam (79) makes the top 15.
Share of the 11,022 JW Player domains we matched to a company record — 51.6% of the 21,351 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
JW Player Market Share Among Video Players & Hosting
What is JW Player's market share? 0.5% of Video Players & Hosting, 10th of the 86 technologies we track there on TechnologyChecker.io. Vimeo leads the rivals listed with 744,870 domains (17.56%). Among paid platforms JW Player sits in the middle: Wistia (38,933) and Bitmovin (39,008) hold 0.92% each, Flowplayer 0.29% and Brightcove 0.11%. Read the 0.5% with care, because about 28% of JW Player's domains are SportsEngine club sites carrying a bundled player rather than a JWX account.
Top Competitors by Market Share
JW Player Customers by Company Size & Age
Is JW Player only for small businesses? By count it looks that way: 62.13% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees. SportsEngine explains part of it, supplying 2,185 of those 6,209 small companies, mostly clubs and leagues. Outside SportsEngine, 54.4% (4,029 of 7,406) are that small. 352 companies (3.52%) have more than 1,000 staff, among them BMW Group, Huawei, AbbVie and PwC.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (29.19%), then the 2000s (22.49%). Only 5.67% date from the 2020s, which fits a player many sites installed years ago and kept. At the other end, 515 companies (12.81%) predate 1960, among them Chicago Public Schools (1837), Baylor Scott & White (1903) and BMW Group (1916).
What Industries Use JW Player the Most?
Spectator Sports leads at 18.86% (1,632 companies), and SportsEngine supplies 1,464 of them, about nine in ten. Without that one site builder the sector would hold about 170 companies, behind Primary and Secondary Education (233, 2.69%) and Broadcast Media Production and Distribution (228, 2.63%). The rest of the chart is flat. No other industry passes 2.7%, and schools, hospitals, broadcasters and agencies sit within a few dozen companies of each other, based on our enriched company data.
Youth sports clubs using JW Player mostly get it through SportsEngine's site builder rather than by choice. Schools and school boards on JW Player (233 in Primary and Secondary Education, 213 in Education Administration) include Chicago Public Schools on its STEM site and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Broadcasters using JW Player (228) include India Today on its podcast site, and hospitals using JW Player (198) include Baylor Scott & White on its newsroom, based on our enriched company data.
JW Player Alternatives & Competitors
JW Player sits in the middle of the paid video platforms, based on our market share data at TechnologyChecker.io. Vimeo (17.56%) is the biggest rival listed, and 385 domains run Vimeo and JW Player together today, out of 516 ever seen with both. Flowplayer (0.29%) overlaps on 272, Wistia (0.92%) on 45, Bitmovin (0.92%) on 34 and Brightcove (0.11%) on just 11. No pair passes our switching tests, because most sites that ever ran both still do.

Expert Analysis: JW Player Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

JW Player is a name most video buyers know, so I expected its list to be publishers and broadcasters. Some of it is. A large part is something else: players that came bundled with a website or were installed years ago. Our October 2026 crawl counts a domain when its pages load JW Player from JWX's hosts, expose the global jwplayer object or request JWX's servers. That gives 21,351 live domains, 11,022 matched to a company. I opened 60 domains at random from outside SportsEngine in a browser: 48 ran JW Player, 7 failed to load and 3 of the other 5 were bot walls.
One site builder, 6,041 domains
SportsEngine, the youth-sports platform that is now part of PlayMetrics, builds websites for clubs and leagues. Its site builder ships JW Player 6.12 from each club's own domain; the five club sites I loaded all had it, whether or not the page showed a video. That covers 6,041 domains, about 28% of the count, and 1,464 of the 1,632 Spectator Sports companies on the industry chart. The clubs bought a website, and JW Player came with it.
Sales signal: remove SportsEngine sites from any JW Player prospect list. For sports-tech sellers, though, those 6,041 domains are a clean list of SportsEngine customers.
A lot of old players
The jwplayer object reports its version, which tells you how old an install is. In my random sample, 42 pages reported one: 14 ran an 8.x build and 28 ran version 5, 6 or 7. The top of the company list looks similar. Every PwC member-firm site I loaded runs 7.2.4, Lenovo Press runs 5.7, and AbbVie's news centre and Huawei's consumer site run 6.6. 8.x builds turn up at BMW Group (8.38), Televisa (8.49) and Wyndham's franchise site (8.51).
Sales signal: a site on version 5 to 7 is a likely replacement prospect. It's probably not on a current JWX plan, and its video setup was never moved to the 8.x player.
Growth trajectory
The chart reads 17,227 domains in June 2026, 20,286 in July, 20,858 in August, 21,172 in September and 21,351 in October. The June to July jump is coverage: the domains we crawl turn over each month, with dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens over time. From July to October the line added 1,065. Since March 2026, 2,747 domains dropped JW Player on at least one hostname, and 633 of those still run it on another.
"Strip out SportsEngine's clubs and the sites still running version 5 to 7, and the base of JW Player sites that chose a current player is far smaller than 21,351 suggests." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: the installed base has barely moved since July. For JWX, growth comes from upgrading old installs; for rivals, from those same installs.
Who the customers are
62.13% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees. SportsEngine supplies 2,185 of them; outside it, 54.4% (4,029 of 7,406) are that small. 352 companies have more than 1,000 staff. Many run JW Player on one property: BMW Group's press club, AbbVie's news centre, Trend Micro's newsroom, Oman Air's in-flight entertainment site. Only 5.67% were founded in the 2020s.
Sales signal: at large accounts, look for the communications or press team. A newsroom running an old player build is a concrete opener.
Industry and geography
Take SportsEngine out of Spectator Sports and the industry chart is flat. Primary and Secondary Education (233), Broadcast Media (228), Education Administration (213) and Hospitals (198) lead, all under 2.7% each. The United States has 6,048 matched companies, then France (667), the United Kingdom (514), Canada (474) and Germany (458). France's second place has no platform behind it that we could find; 457 of those 667 companies run PHP sites.
Sales signal: France's 667 JW Player companies look like individual choices, not one platform's fleet, which makes them a ready list for a European video vendor.
Overlap with other players
There's no migration table, because no rival passes our switching tests. Overlap tells the story instead. 385 domains run Vimeo and JW Player together today, of 516 ever seen with both. Flowplayer shares 272, Wistia 45, Bitmovin 34 and Brightcove only 11. Brightcove's buyers are also larger: 9.62% of its matched companies have more than 1,000 staff, against 3.52% of JW Player's.
"JW Player and Brightcove share just 11 domains. The buyer's guides pit them against each other, but their customers barely meet." - Elif Arslan, CMO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: Vimeo next to JW Player can mean two teams with two tools, so ask before you pitch. Either way it's a consolidation conversation.
The ad stack
Prebid runs on 32.45% of JW Player domains, ID5 on 30.88%, comScore on 30.86% and 33Across on 29.69%. It looks like a publisher list, but SportsEngine's club sites carry the same tags and account for 6,019 of the 6,935 Prebid domains. JWX sells advertising as well as playback: its About page lists "80% of comScore US Publishers" among its numbers.
Sales signal: for ad-tech sellers, the 916 non-SportsEngine sites running Prebid with JW Player are the publisher list worth working.
JWX today
JWX was formed in 2024 from JW Player and Connatix, says it serves more than 7,000 customers and is headquartered in New York. Its pricing page lists Express, Publishing and Broadcasting editions without prices, and its billing reference lists a Free edition capped at 5,000 plays a month. The open-source player on GitHub was archived on 18 November 2025.
Sales signal: quote-only pricing and an archived open-source player push small sites toward a decision. Owners of old builds will have to choose between a JWX contract and another player.

The open-source player on GitHub allowed non-commercial use only, and its repository was archived on 18 November 2025. Many sites in our crawl still run old player builds, often versions 5 to 7.
How much does JW Player cost?
JWX doesn't list prices. Its pricing page shows three editions, Express (up to 1,600 hours of video managed), Publishing and Broadcasting, billed on hours managed or, for Publishing, an ad revenue share as well, with quotes through sales. Prebid runs on 32.45% of JW Player domains and comScore on 30.86%, though SportsEngine's club sites account for most of both.
How does JW Player work?
A site loads the JW Player JavaScript library, either from JWX's servers (cdn.jwplayer.com, with a library ID in the address) or from its own server, and then creates a player on the page. That leaves a global jwplayer object, one of the signals our crawl uses, alongside requests to jwplayer.com, jwpcdn.com, jwplatform.com and jwpsrv.com hosts.
What happened to JW Player?
It merged with Connatix in 2024, and the combined company now trades as JWX: jwplayer.com redirects to jwx.com, and the site's footer reads JWP, Inc. JWX says it has more than 7,000 customers and is headquartered in New York. The player keeps the JW Player name in its dashboard and docs, and our crawl still finds it on 21,351 live domains.
Why do so many youth sports sites show up as JW Player users?
Because of SportsEngine, a youth-sports platform that is now part of PlayMetrics. Its site builder loads JW Player 6.12 on club pages whether or not they show a video. That covers 6,041 domains, about 28% of our JW Player count, and 1,464 of the 1,632 Spectator Sports companies on our industry chart. Treat those sites as SportsEngine customers.
JW Player vs Vimeo: do sites switch between them?
Rarely in a way we can call switching. 385 domains run Vimeo and JW Player together today, out of 516 ever seen with both, so most sites that have both keep both, and the pair fails our switching tests. Vimeo is far bigger, with 744,870 domains to JW Player's 21,351 in our October 2026 crawl, and the two usually sit side by side.
