Our October 2026 crawl finds the Plyr video player on 141,925 live sites. Plyr is a free JavaScript player released under the MIT licence, so that's a count of websites, not paying customers. Below is the list of companies that use Plyr, with size, country, industry and stack. It includes Vale, Engie, CSL and AkzoNobel on their main sites, plus careers sites for Allianz, CVS Health and Roche, where the recruiting platform Phenom loads the player.

Plyr ranks #5 of the 86 technologies we track in Video Players & Hosting, with a 3.35% share. Many of these sites didn't pick it directly. In a random sample of 211 live Plyr sites we opened, 79 loaded it through WordPress plugins or themes and 22 through a Shopify theme. The project is also winding down: Plyr's own site now marks it deprecated, with security updates only, and sends new projects to Video.js 10, which became stable on 1 October 2026.

Plyr Usage Statistics

Our current crawl counts 108,728 Plyr sites in June 2026 and 141,925 in October 2026. Don't read that as adoption. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The monthly steps of 16,681, 7,661, 7,122 and 1,733 domains reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Plyr with, rather than a surge in adoption.

Exits are easier to count. 21,385 domains have dropped Plyr since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026. When we rechecked on 12 October, about one in ten of them still loaded it on another hostname, so the drop count overstates sites that are fully gone.

List of Companies Using Plyr

Our list of companies using Plyr covers 84,733 organisations matched from 141,925 detected sites, a 59.7% match rate. Every size, industry and country figure on this page describes that matched set.

The named brands that use Plyr cluster on a few kinds of site. 23 of the 50 were detected on careers sites, 13 of them built on Phenom. Six more are annual-report microsites (Bayer, Novo Nordisk, Deutsche Telekom, Jerónimo Martins, Merck KGaA and Fresenius) with an identical asset layout, which suggests one report template behind all six. The rest, such as Vale, Engie and Bombardier, carry it on a main or newsroom site. When you review websites using Plyr at a large company, check the surface first: a careers or report site usually comes from an outside supplier.

Which Countries Use Plyr the Most?

Which countries use Plyr the most? The United States leads with 22,275 matched companies, about 3.2 times the United Kingdom (6,885) and Germany (6,425). France (3,810), Australia (3,493), the Netherlands (3,329) and Spain (3,246) come next. Europe weighs more than the US lead suggests: the nine European countries in our top 15, leaving out Turkey, add up to 30,841 companies. Plyr has no sales team, so this spread shows where sites get built.

Plyr Market Share Among Video Players & Hosting

What is Plyr's market share? Plyr holds 3.35% of Video Players & Hosting and ranks #5 of 86, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. MediaElement.js (792,969 domains, 18.69%) and VideoJS (778,953, 18.36%) are each about 5.5 times its size. Below Plyr the gap opens the other way: JW Player has 21,351 domains, Presto Player 14,798 and Flowplayer 12,312. The category mixes stand-alone players with hosted video services, so read the rank as reach rather than a head-to-head choice.

Plyr Customers by Company Size & Age

Is Plyr only used by small businesses? Mostly. 57.29% of matched companies with a published size band have 1-10 employees, and 81.89% have 50 or fewer. Above 1,000 employees there are still 1,940 companies, 386 of them with more than 10,000 staff. Those large accounts rarely show Plyr on the corporate homepage: 23 of the 50 companies in our list were detected on a careers site, and 13 of those careers sites run on Phenom's recruiting platform, which serves Plyr 3.7.8 from its own CDN.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

How old are companies that use Plyr? 36.48% of matched companies with a known founding year date from the 2010s, 17.88% from the 2020s and 17.36% from the 2000s, so 71.72% were founded in 2000 or later. The older tail is real too: 6.68% (3,069 companies) predate 1960. That group reaches back to Merck KGaA (founded 1668), whose annual report site carries the player, and AkzoNobel (1792), which runs it on its main site.

What Industries Use Plyr the Most?

Retail leads at only 3.62%, followed by Advertising Services (3.4%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (3.03%). The ten industries charted add up to 27.16% of matched companies, so Plyr has no home vertical: it turns up wherever a site needs a styled video or audio player, based on our enriched company data. Advertising Services in second place hints that agencies install a good share of it.

IT Services and IT Consulting2,241 (3.03%)
Software Development2,196 (2.96%)
Construction2,120 (2.86%)
Real Estate2,084 (2.81%)

Churches and non-profits using Plyr are a bigger group than you'd expect for a video library: Religious Institutions (1.96%) and Non-profit Organizations (1.95%) add up to 2,894 companies, a little more than Retail's 2,682. Construction and real estate companies on Plyr number 4,204 between them (2.86% and 2.81%). Healthcare and life-science organisations using Plyr include Baylor Scott & White Health on bswhealth.com, CSL on csl.com and Genentech on gene.com.

Plyr Alternatives & Competitors

Read this table with Plyr's deprecation in mind. Its maintainers now point new projects to Video.js 10, which reached a stable release on 1 October 2026 and brings Video.js, Plyr, Vidstack, Media Chrome and Mux Player into one player. That makes VideoJS (18.36%) the row to watch: 5,568 domains already run VideoJS and Plyr together. MediaElement.js (18.69%) overlaps on 5,228 domains. JW Player (0.5%), Presto Player (0.35%), a WordPress video plugin, and Flowplayer (0.29%) are far smaller, with 180, 400 and 220 domains running both.

Expert Analysis: Plyr Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

The first question to ask about a Plyr detection is who put the player on the page. As of our October 2026 crawl, TechnologyChecker.io finds Plyr on 141,925 live sites, and 84,733 of them match a company record, a 59.7% match rate. Often it wasn't the site owner: a WordPress plugin, a Shopify theme or a careers platform brought it along. And the project itself is now deprecated, which gives every one of these sites a reason to look at its video player again.

What a Plyr detection means

Our rule counts a site when it loads a script from cdn.plyr.io, exposes the Plyr JavaScript object or sets the --plyr-progress CSS variable. Bundled copies trip it just like direct installs. To see the split, I drew a random sample of live Plyr domains and opened the 211 that still responded. 79 loaded Plyr through WordPress plugins or themes, 22 through a Shopify theme or Shopify's media player, and another 79 from cdn.plyr.io, a public CDN or a file on their own server. Eleven came through third parties such as Pixieset's photographer sites or an embedded video host, and on 20 we couldn't find the player on the homepage.

No single product dominates. The largest carrier, the Easy Video Player plugin, accounted for 15 of the 211 sites (7.1%). The rest spread across EmbedPress, HTML5 Video Player, Dynamic Content for Elementor and dozens of themes, each with a handful.

Sales Signal: Read a Plyr hit as "this site plays its own video" and little more. For almost four in ten sites, the real decision-maker is whoever chose the WordPress plugin or theme, often an agency, so ask about the video setup before you pitch anything Plyr-specific.

A deprecated player on 141,925 sites

Our current crawl window shows 108,728 Plyr sites in June 2026, 125,409 in July, 133,070 in August, 140,192 in September and 141,925 in October. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The steps reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Plyr with, rather than a surge in adoption.

Meanwhile the project has wound down. plyr.io and the GitHub repository now say Plyr is deprecated and receives security updates only, and both send new projects to Video.js 10. Video.js 10 went GA on 1 October 2026 as a rebuild that brings together Video.js, Plyr, Vidstack, Media Chrome and Mux Player. Version 3.8.5 of Plyr still reached npm on 6 October, so fixes are flowing. Few sites take them, though. Of the 16 sampled pages that name a version in their cdn.plyr.io link, nine pin 3.7.8 from March 2023 and the other seven are older.

"Almost 142,000 sites run a player whose own homepage now tells you to use something else. None of them is in trouble today, but together they're a dated, countable migration backlog." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: The deprecation gives video vendors and agencies a dated reason to call. Lead with the facts: Plyr still gets security patches, but new features now go to Video.js 10.

The companies behind the sites

The matched base is small and fairly young. 57.29% of companies with a size band have 1-10 employees and 81.89% have 50 or fewer, and 71.72% of those with a known founding year date from 2000 or later. Retail leads the industry chart at just 3.62%, and the ten industries charted add up to 27.16%. Religious Institutions and Non-profit Organizations together (2,894 companies) edge past Retail's 2,682.

The enterprise tail is 1,940 companies above 1,000 employees, and for these accounts the subdomain says more than the company name. In our named list, 23 of 50 were detected on careers sites. Thirteen of those, including Allianz, CVS Health, Roche and Boston Consulting Group, run on Phenom, which serves a Plyr 3.7.8 stylesheet from its own CDN. Six more, such as Aon, Ulta Beauty and Travelers, load Plyr inside a video widget from widget.altrulabs.com, a domain that now redirects to the recruiting-software company iCIMS. Six are annual-report microsites with an identical asset layout. The direct deployments sit on main sites: Vale, Engie, CSL, AkzoNobel, Bombardier and Genentech.

Sales Signal: At a large company, Plyr on a careers site tells you about the recruiting platform, not the web team. Sell video or front-end work to the main-site deployments, and treat every Phenom or Altru site as one decision made by the platform vendor.

Industries and countries

The United States leads with 22,275 matched companies, about 3.2 times the United Kingdom (6,885) and Germany (6,425). But the nine European countries in our top 15, leaving out Turkey, total 30,841, more than the US. Australia (3,493) and Canada (2,562) add to the English-speaking share, and India (2,885) and Brazil (2,644) sit just behind Italy (2,887).

Advertising Services is second in the industry chart at 3.4%, and IT Services and IT Consulting follows at 3.03%. Those are the firms that build sites for other businesses, which fits a library that so often arrives inside plugins and themes.

Sales Signal: Start with agencies. One agency that standardised on a Plyr-based plugin can move many client sites to a new player at once, so rank agency domains in this list above single-site owners.

Why this profile has no migration table

We tested where Plyr sites go when they drop it, and we publish nothing on purpose. For every rival in the category, most domains that ever ran both players still run both: 5,568 domains run VideoJS and Plyr together today, and 5,228 run MediaElement.js and Plyr. A site carrying two players usually has two plugins, or a theme plus a plugin, rather than a migration in progress, so the switching counts didn't pass our gates.

Exits are real but noisy. 21,385 domains have dropped Plyr since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, equal to 15.1% of today's count, and about one in ten of those still load it on another hostname. For a library, a drop is more often a redesign or a dead site than a decision about players.

"When most sites that run two video players keep running both, the overlap is plugin clutter, not switching. I'd rather show no migration table than one built on clutter." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Don't build a "sites leaving Plyr" campaign from drops. Work the current installed base instead, because that's where the Video.js 10 decision is still open.

The stack around Plyr

jQuery runs on 83.53% of the 144,837 domains in our stack analysis, core-js on 66.9% and Swiper on 35.2%. WordPress appears on 45.7%, Elementor on 20.45% and Shopify on 12.65%, with WooCommerce on 9.06%. Bootstrap (28.57%) is ahead of Tailwind CSS (18.69%), and Google Analytics is on 60.13%.

The Video.js side has a corporate owner of its own: according to videojs.org, Brightcove holds the Video.js trademark, and the project's site credits Mux for video hosting and streaming. Neither changes the licence, but both are names a buyer will meet when the Plyr question comes up.

Sales Signal: For video hosts and streaming vendors, a Plyr site that serves its own video files is a prospect for hosted delivery, and the move to Video.js 10 is the moment that choice gets revisited. For WordPress maintenance firms, the jQuery and Elementor overlap describes the typical client.

How to use this list

Pair Plyr with WordPress to reach the plugin-driven sites, or with Shopify for stores that show product video. Companies with 11-200 employees, 34.92% of the matched set, are the ones past the one-person stage. Check the detection URL before you reach out: a careers or report subdomain points to a supplier, a main domain to the company's own web team.

An opener that fits this list: "Your site at [domain] plays video with Plyr, which its maintainers have deprecated in favour of Video.js 10. If a player change is on your list for next year, here's what the move looks like with [product]."

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Plyr?

Plyr runs on 141,925 live sites in our October 2026 crawl, mostly small businesses: 57.29% of matched companies have 1-10 employees. Larger names include Vale, Engie, CSL and AkzoNobel on their main sites. Many enterprises carry it on careers sites instead, such as Allianz, CVS Health and Roche, where Phenom's recruiting platform loads the player rather than the company's own web team.

How many customers does Plyr have?

Plyr is free, so it has no customers in the paying sense. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 141,925 live sites, and we matched 84,733 of them to a company record. Since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, 21,385 domains have dropped Plyr, though about one in ten of those still load it on another hostname.

What is Plyr's market share?

Plyr holds 3.35% of the Video Players & Hosting category and ranks #5 of the 86 technologies we track there. MediaElement.js (18.69%) and VideoJS (18.36%) are each about 5.5 times its size by domain count. Plyr is well ahead of JW Player (0.5%), Presto Player (0.35%) and Flowplayer (0.29%), based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io.

What are the best alternatives to Plyr?

Plyr's own maintainers recommend Video.js 10, which reached a stable release on 1 October 2026 and folds Plyr, Vidstack and Media Chrome into one player; there's an official guide for migrating from Plyr. Other options in our category table are MediaElement.js, JW Player, Flowplayer and, on WordPress, Presto Player. 5,568 domains already run VideoJS alongside Plyr.

Which countries use Plyr the most?

The United States leads with 22,275 matched companies, followed by the United Kingdom (6,885), Germany (6,425), France (3,810) and Australia (3,493). The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, India and Brazil complete the top ten. Europe adds up to more than the US, though: the nine European countries in our top 15, leaving out Turkey, account for 30,841 companies.

What size companies use Plyr?

Mostly small ones. 57.29% of matched companies with a size band have 1-10 employees, 24.6% have 11-50 and 10.32% have 51-200. Only 1,940 have more than 1,000 staff, and those usually run Plyr on a careers, report or newsroom site rather than their main website, often through a supplier such as the Phenom careers platform.

How old are companies that use Plyr?

Most were founded after 2000. 36.48% of matched companies with a known founding year date from the 2010s, 17.88% from the 2020s and 17.36% from the 2000s, a combined 71.72%. A smaller group, 6.68%, predates 1960, and it includes Merck KGaA, AkzoNobel and Bayer, which run Plyr on their report or corporate sites.

What is the ideal customer profile for Plyr?

The ideal Plyr customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (57.29%), Location: United States, then UK, Germany and France, Founded: 2000 or later (71.72%), Industry: Retail, agencies and IT services, Site Stack: WordPress or Shopify with jQuery — based on our analysis of 84,733 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Who owns Plyr?

No company owns it. Plyr was created by Sam Potts, who publishes it on GitHub under the MIT licence. The people behind Plyr have since joined the teams behind Vidstack and Media Chrome to build Video.js 10, and Plyr's site now calls the project deprecated, with security updates only. Anyone can still use, copy or modify the code under that licence.

Is Plyr deprecated?

Yes. Plyr's website and GitHub repository both say it is deprecated and receives security updates only, and both point new projects to Video.js 10. Releases haven't stopped entirely: version 3.8.5 reached npm on 6 October 2026. Sites already on Plyr can keep running it, but new player features will go to Video.js, not Plyr.

Is Plyr free?

Yes. Plyr is open source under the MIT licence, which allows commercial use without payment, and you can load it from cdn.plyr.io or install it from npm. That's why our figure of 141,925 counts websites rather than paying customers. Hosting and streaming the video files is a separate cost, and Plyr doesn't provide it.

How do I use Plyr?

Add Plyr's CSS and JavaScript from cdn.plyr.io or npm, mark up an HTML5 video, audio, YouTube or Vimeo element, and create the player with new Plyr(). Many sites never update after that. Of the 16 sampled pages that name a version in their cdn.plyr.io link, nine pin 3.7.8 from March 2023 and the other seven are older.

What is the difference between Plyr and Video.js?

Plyr is a lightweight player with its own controls for HTML5 video, YouTube and Vimeo. Video.js is the larger project its maintainers now back: Video.js 10, stable since 1 October 2026, is a rebuild that brings in Plyr, Vidstack and Media Chrome, and it publishes a guide for migrating from Plyr. In our crawl, 5,568 domains run both players today.

Which WordPress plugins use Plyr?

In a random sample of 211 live Plyr sites, the most common carrier was Easy Video Player (15 sites), followed by EmbedPress, Dynamic Content for Elementor, HTML5 Audio Player and HTML5 Video Player. EmbedPress and HTML5 Video Player name Plyr in their plugin descriptions. Altogether, 79 of the 211 sites loaded Plyr through WordPress plugins or themes.

How does TechnologyChecker.io detect Plyr?

We count a site when a page loads a script from cdn.plyr.io, exposes the Plyr JavaScript object, or sets Plyr's --plyr-progress CSS variable. That catches copies bundled inside WordPress plugins, Shopify themes and careers platforms as well as direct installs, so read 141,925 as sites running the Plyr player, whoever added it.
