Companies Using Plotly
Our October 2026 crawl finds Plotly.js on 1,643 live domains. Plotly.js is the free charting library, released under the MIT licence, behind Plotly's Python and R libraries and its Dash framework, so we count websites that load it, not paying customers. The list of companies that use Plotly below includes 3M's Ask 3M site, Blackstone, the FDIC, the World Economic Forum's Lumina platform and Santander's corporate-banking client portal.
Treat 1,643 as a floor. Most Plotly charts live in notebooks and internal dashboards that never reach a public page, and npm logged 770,998 downloads of the plotly.js package in the week to 11 October 2026. Plotly ranks 21st of the 55 tools in Charting & Data Visualization, with 0.34%. One quirk: 79 of the 1,651 live domains we profile (4.8%) are email-only domains whose holding page, from the email provider Soverin, bundles Plotly.

Plotly Usage Statistics
Plotly reads 909 domains in June 2026, 1,130 in July, 1,430 in August, 1,635 in September and 1,643 in October. The climb to September reflects changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Plotly with, rather than a surge in adoption; the set of domains we crawl also turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added. September to October added 8 domains, and that flat step is the better read of the trend. Since we began tracking it in March 2026, 244 domains have dropped it, and 25 of those still run it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use Plotly the Most?
Which countries use Plotly the most? The United States, with 222 matched companies. The Netherlands is second with 66, but 39 of those 66 sit on email-only domains showing Soverin's holding page, so the real Dutch figure is nearer 27. Then come the United Kingdom (54), Germany (46), India (41), Canada (35), France (34), Spain (30) and Switzerland (29). These counts cover the 883 domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 883 Plotly domains we matched to a company record — 53.7% of the 1,643 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Plotly Market Share Among Charting & Data Visualization
What is Plotly's market share? 0.34% of Charting & Data Visualization, 21st of the 55 tools we track there, based on our October 2026 crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Chart.js leads with 323,384 domains (66.4%), about 197 times Plotly's 1,643. The share understates Plotly's use, which sits mostly in Python and R notebooks and internal Dash apps. On the public web it's a specialist library for data-heavy pages.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Plotly Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Plotly? Mostly small ones. 57.19% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.43% have 11 to 50, so 83.62% have 50 or fewer. Only 25 of the 855 with a known size have more than 1,000 staff (2.92%), and at the ones I checked Plotly is often one team's page: 3M's Ask 3M site, Santander's corporate-banking client portal, Cerema's Avatar site.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (37.67%), and 34.12% in the 2020s, about twice the 17.5% median across our 557 published profiles. That puts Plotly beside ApexCharts (36.19%) and well away from D3 (13.07%), whose base is older. Young software and data companies building dashboards account for much of the public footprint.
What Industries Use Plotly the Most?
Software Development leads at 10.37%, then Technology, Information and Internet (6.03%), IT Services and IT Consulting (5.91%) and Financial Services (5.31%), based on our enriched company data. Research Services (3.02%), non-profits (2.65%) and Biotechnology Research (2.17%) also make the top ten. Research Services isn't in the top ten on the D3, Chart.js or ApexCharts profiles.
Public bodies using Plotly include the FDIC, France's Cerema, the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic for its yield curve and Croatia's meteorological service on meteo.hr. Research institutes on Plotly include Spain's Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, Germany's IWH Halle, which runs a Dash app, and the Ohio Supercomputer Center. Financial and market-data firms using Plotly include Blackstone, Coin Metrics and TrendForce.
Plotly Alternatives & Competitors
Plotly sits beside the big libraries more than it competes with them. 295 Plotly domains also run Chart.js (about 18%), 94 run D3 and 38 ApexCharts. None of these pairs passes our switching tests: of the 330 domains ever seen with Plotly and Chart.js since March, 295 still run both, and for D3 it's 94 of 101. Highcharts (25,341 domains, 5.2%) and amCharts (10,251, 2.1%) complete the table.

Expert Analysis: Plotly Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Plotly is the odd one out in our charting table: a widely used library with a small public footprint. Our October 2026 crawl finds 1,643 live domains, 883 matched to a company, 21st of 55 in Charting & Data Visualization. A domain counts when a page defines Plotly's global object (Plotly.version) or loads Plotly from cdn.plot.ly. I opened 45 random live domains: 38 loaded, and 36 of those 38 ran Plotly. Of the 50 named companies below, I confirmed it on 43; the rest are log-in portals and apps that wouldn't render for me.
A floor, not a market
npm counted 770,998 downloads of plotly.js and 561,229 of plotly.js-dist-min in the week to 11 October 2026, and Plotly's about page says its open-source tools have been downloaded over a billion times. Most of that runs in notebooks, Python scripts and internal Dash apps behind a log-in. What reaches a public page is a thin slice: data hubs, client portals, calculators and dashboards. Our count sees that slice and nothing else.
Sales signal: a Plotly domain marks a team that builds its own data products in code, usually Python. That's a better buying signal for data tooling than for marketing software.
How it gets onto a page
Of the 1,132 Plotly domains where we logged third-party scripts, 508 load it from cdn.plot.ly. The rest host their own copy or bundle it, and Dash apps serve it from their own component path, as IWH Halle's regional dashboard does. Two routes aren't anyone's charting choice. A WordPress quiz-plugin add-on (its files sit under qsm-ultimate) ships Plotly 2.34.0 on every page, which is how Idaho Central Credit Union and Team Rubicon carry it. And 79 of 1,651 domains (4.8%) are email-only domains showing a holding page from Soverin, an email provider, under its own name or Dutch ISP Freedom Internet's. That page bundles Plotly.
Versions are spread wide. On 65 pages where I could read Plotly.version, 16 ran a 1.x release, ten of them 1.58.5, which is what pages calling cdn.plot.ly/plotly-latest.min.js received in my checks. npm's current release is 4.1.2.
Sales signal: a site still calling plotly-latest is stuck on 1.58.5. For agencies, that's an upgrade conversation with a visible symptom.
Growth since June
The chart reads 909 in June, 1,130 in July, 1,430 in August, 1,635 in September and 1,643 in October. The rise to September reflects changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Plotly with, rather than a surge in adoption, and the crawled set turns over every month with dead sites out and new ones in. September to October added 8 domains. 244 domains have dropped Plotly since we began tracking it in March 2026, and 25 of them still run it on another hostname.
"Plotly's web footprint is a by-product of data teams publishing their work. Read the count as a map of where they publish." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: don't size a Plotly market from this count. Use it as a list of organisations that already publish code-built dashboards.
Who the customers are
57.19% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.43% have 11 to 50. Age is the striking part: 34.12% were founded in the 2020s, against a 17.5% median across our 557 published profiles, close to ApexCharts (36.19%) and far from D3 (13.07%). Only 25 of the 855 have more than 1,000 staff, and at most of the named ones Plotly is one team's page: 3M's Ask 3M site, Santander's corporate-banking client platform, Cerema's Avatar site. Blackstone and the FDIC are the exceptions, with Plotly on their main sites.
Sales signal: at large accounts, find the team that owns the portal or data hub. At small ones, the buyer is the engineering lead who picked the library.
Industries and countries
Software Development leads at 10.37%, then Technology, Information and Internet (6.03%), IT Services (5.91%) and Financial Services (5.31%). Research Services (3.02%) and Biotechnology Research (2.17%) make the top ten, which Research Services doesn't on the D3, Chart.js or ApexCharts profiles. Public bodies are common in the named list: the FDIC, Cerema, Croatia's meteorological service, the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. The United States leads with 222 matched companies. The Netherlands' 66 is inflated, because 39 of them sit on Soverin holding-page domains.
Sales signal: research institutes, regulators and central banks that publish data are a natural vertical list for anyone selling data visualisation or open-data tooling.
Chart.js, D3 and switching
295 Plotly domains also run Chart.js (about 18%), 94 run D3 and 38 ApexCharts. None of these pairs passes our switching tests. Of the 330 domains ever seen with Plotly and Chart.js since March, 295 still run both; for D3 it's 94 of 101. A site in our data rarely swaps one library for another. It adds one.
"Nearly nine in ten sites ever seen with Plotly and Chart.js still run both. On the web, sites add charting libraries far more often than they drop one." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: pitching a Plotly site on replacing its charting is weak. Pitch what Plotly.js doesn't do on its own, such as hosting, sharing and access control for the app.
The stack around it
WordPress runs on 28.16% of the 1,651 live domains we profile and Elementor on 10.05%, but the app frameworks are the better signal: React Router 13.45%, React 10.24%, Angular 9.75%, Ruby on Rails 8.3%, Vue.js 8.24% and Next.js 6.97%. Amazon Web Services hosts 16.17%. Python is invisible to a browser, but Django (2.73%) and Dash's script paths give it away.
Sales signal: Plotly sites on React or Angular are app teams, while the WordPress ones are often a plugin or a single embedded chart. Split the list before outreach.
What it costs
Plotly.js is free under the MIT licence, and so is Dash. Plotly earns from hosting and enterprise deployment. Its pricing page (12 October 2026) lists a Free plan, Pro at $29 per creator seat a month with 30 Plotly credits, and custom-priced Enterprise; Dash Enterprise is quoted.
Sales signal: a public Dash app is a lead for hosting and deployment vendors, Plotly's own sales team included.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Plotly?
Mostly small software and data companies, plus public bodies and research institutes that publish data. Our October 2026 crawl finds Plotly.js on 1,643 live domains. Named users include 3M on its Ask 3M site, Blackstone, the FDIC, the World Economic Forum, Santander's corporate-banking portal, Cerema and Coin Metrics. 57.19% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff.
How many customers does Plotly have?
Plotly.js is free, so there's no customer count to quote; our figure is websites. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 1,643 live domains, 883 matched to a company. That's a floor: npm logged 770,998 plotly.js downloads in the week to 11 October 2026, and most Plotly charts sit in notebooks or behind log-ins. 244 domains have dropped it since March 2026.
What is Plotly's market share?
0.34% of Charting & Data Visualization, 21st of the 55 tools we track there, on 1,643 domains in October 2026. Chart.js leads with 323,384 domains (66.4%), about 197 times as many. The share understates Plotly, because its main users work in Python and R, and most of their charts never appear on a public web page we can crawl.
What are the best alternatives to Plotly?
In JavaScript, Chart.js is the simple, widely used option (323,384 domains in our crawl); D3 (20,719) gives full control at more effort; ApexCharts (23,328) and Highcharts (25,341) suit dashboards. In Python, Matplotlib and Bokeh are the usual comparisons. Many sites keep Plotly and add another library: 295 Plotly domains also run Chart.js.
Which countries use Plotly the most?
The United States, with 222 matched companies, then the Netherlands (66), the United Kingdom (54), Germany (46), India (41) and Canada (35). The Dutch figure is inflated: 39 of the 66 sit on email-only domains whose holding page, from Soverin, bundles Plotly. Without them the Netherlands would be about 27. The counts cover 883 matched domains.
What size companies use Plotly?
Mostly small ones. 57.19% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.43% have 11 to 50, so 83.62% have 50 or fewer. Only 25 of 855 have more than 1,000 staff (2.92%), among them 3M, Blackstone and Santander, and at those firms Plotly usually runs on a single portal or data site.
How old are companies that use Plotly?
Young. 37.67% of matched companies with a known founding year date from the 2010s and 34.12% from the 2020s, so 71.79% were founded since 2010. The 2020s share is about twice the 17.5% median across our 557 published profiles, close to ApexCharts' 36.19% and well above D3's 13.07%, whose users are older companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for Plotly?
The ideal Plotly customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (57.19%), Location: United States, then UK, Germany, India, Industry: Software, IT, finance and research, Founded: 2010s (37.67%), 2020s (34.12%), Use case: Dashboards, portals and data hubs — based on our analysis of 883 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
Is Plotly free?
Plotly.js, the charting library we detect, is free and open source under the MIT licence, and so is Dash, Plotly's Python framework. Plotly charges for hosting and enterprise deployment: its pricing page lists a Free plan, Pro at $29 per creator seat a month and custom-priced Enterprise (checked 12 October 2026). Dash Enterprise is sold on a quote.
How much does Dash software cost?
Open-source Dash costs nothing; it's released under the MIT licence on GitHub. Publishing apps through Plotly Cloud has a Free plan, then Pro at $29 per creator seat a month with 30 Plotly credits and 10 private viewers, with extra viewers at $10 a seat a month. Dash Enterprise, which runs inside your own infrastructure, is priced on request. Checked 12 October 2026.
Which is better for charting, Chart.js or Plotly?
They solve different problems. Chart.js is a light library for standard charts and runs on 323,384 domains in our crawl. Plotly.js ships over 40 chart types, including 3D and statistical charts, pairs with Python and R, and runs on 1,643. Many sites use both: 295 Plotly domains also run Chart.js, and nearly nine in ten pairs seen since March still do.
Is Plotly different from Matplotlib?
Yes. Matplotlib mainly draws static images in Python. Plotly draws interactive charts that run in the browser through Plotly.js, whether you write Python, R or JavaScript. That's also why we can count Plotly and not Matplotlib: a Matplotlib chart on a web page is usually a plain image file, while a Plotly chart loads the library, which our crawl finds on 1,643 live domains.
What is Dash and Plotly?
Plotly is the Montreal company behind the Plotly.js charting library and the Python and R libraries built on it. Dash is its open-source Python framework for building data apps. A Dash app renders its charts with Plotly.js, so a public Dash app shows up in our count. IWH Halle's regional dashboard is one: it serves Plotly from Dash's own component path.
Is Dash an open-source framework?
Yes. Dash is released under the MIT licence on GitHub, the same licence as Plotly.js, so you can build and host Dash apps yourself for free. Plotly sells hosting through Plotly Cloud and a self-hosted platform, Dash Enterprise, for organisations that want managed deployment and log-in controls. In our crawl, public Dash apps appear as Plotly sites.
Who created Plotly?
Plotly was founded in 2012 in Montreal by Alex Johnson, Jack Parmer, Chris Parmer and Matthew Sundquist, according to its Wikipedia entry. The company publishes its charting library, Plotly.js, under the MIT licence; the GitHub repository dates from November 2015 and had 18,360 stars on 12 October 2026. Our crawl finds Plotly.js on 1,643 live domains.
How can you tell if a website uses Plotly?
Open the browser console and type Plotly.version. If it returns a version number, the page has Plotly.js. You can also look for a script loaded from cdn.plot.ly. Our crawl uses those two tests. Bundled builds that hide the Plotly global, and Python charts exported as static images, aren't detected, so our 1,643 domains are a floor.
