Companies Using Nextcloud

Most technologies in our crawl are scripts a website loads. Nextcloud is different: it is a server an organisation runs, and our crawl meets it when it reaches the login page or a shared link. A domain counts when that server sets Nextcloud's SameSite cookies or exposes its version setting. In our October 2026 crawl that gives 3,903 live domains, 2,357 of them matched to a company, 9th of 42 in Digital Asset Management. Every number below counts installations. I checked them by asking each server for its public status file, which nearly all Nextcloud servers answer.

Where the servers are

The hostname tells you what you're looking at. Of the 4,144 Nextcloud hostnames behind these domains, 1,621 start with cloud., 278 with nextcloud., and many others with drive., files., nuage., nube. or wolke. in their own languages. Most organisations run the server themselves. The one platform of size is Hetzner: 234 domains, 5.84% of the 4,009 in our clean set, point their Nextcloud host at Hetzner's managed Storage Share by DNS, and that is a floor, since some customers point straight at an IP address. Each is still the customer's own instance on its own subdomain. Smaller managed hosts, such as Kamzan, wolkesicher.de and Aruba Drive, account for 15 domains or fewer each.

Sales signal: the person who set up cloud.company.de is usually the IT lead or the outside IT firm. For backup, security or managed-hosting offers, that is the contact, not marketing.

Version drift

Nextcloud ships a major release every four months and supports each for a year. In October 2026 the supported releases are 33, 34 and 35. Of the 3,441 domains where our crawl read a version, 1,792 ran 33 or 34 and 479 ran 32, which reached end of life in September. 1,170, about a third, ran 31 or older, and 477 of those ran 25 or older, releases that stopped getting fixes in 2023 or before. Paid support is rare. Of the 3,571 domains whose servers answered our status check, 73 reported an Enterprise build, including TU Braunschweig, Regione Veneto and Hochschule Nordhausen.

Sales signal: an out-of-date version is a public, specific reason to call. Managed-hosting firms, Nextcloud partners and security auditors can sort this list by version and start at the bottom.

The chart and the exits

The chart reads 796 in June and 3,903 in October. The jump between June and August reflects changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Nextcloud with, and the set of domains we crawl turns over every month as dead sites drop out and new ones are found. September to October was flat. Exits are rare. 117 domains dropped Nextcloud on at least one hostname since 16 March 2026, and 13 still run it elsewhere, so about 104 left it, under 3% of the base in seven months.

Sales signal: a file server, once adopted, stays. Sell services around it, not a replacement.

Who runs it

59.28% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, but the 51 to 200 band is strong at 11.42%, and 56 organisations have more than 1,000 staff. Those large ones are mainly universities and public bodies: the Council of Europe on mycloud.coe.int, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid on UPMdrive, Regione Veneto, the Câmara Municipal de Sintra. The base includes old organisations: 8.26% were founded before 1960, including Bianchi (1885) and Fantoni (1882). IT Services and IT Consulting leads the industries at 8.94%, which makes sense for software that someone has to install and maintain.

Sales signal: IT service firms are the largest group of users and the likeliest installers for smaller clients. A partnership with a regional IT firm can reach more than one account.

A German product, a European base

Germany has 947 of the 2,357 matched companies, about 40%. France (217) is second and the United States (161) third, then Italy (134) and Switzerland (101). The German-speaking countries hold 47.43%. Nextcloud GmbH started in June 2016 and has offices in Stuttgart and Berlin, and its pitch about data sovereignty plays best where data-protection law is strict.

Sales signal: lead with GDPR, hosting location and German-language support. A US-first campaign reaches only 161 matched companies.

The ownCloud question

Frank Karlitschek launched ownCloud in 2010 and left in 2016 to fork it as Nextcloud; ownCloud merged with Kiteworks at the end of 2023. The products still share code, and that shows in our data. ownCloud's rule reads a JavaScript setting that Nextcloud kept, so 3,582 of ownCloud's 3,974 domains are Nextcloud servers that report both. About 392 run ownCloud alone. The reverse leak is tiny: 15 domains reporting versions 7 or 8 are pre-fork ownCloud servers caught by our Nextcloud rule. And the 203 domains that "dropped ownCloud and kept Nextcloud" since March, 198 of them in the last 30 days, are the same servers losing one of two labels, not migrations.

Sales signal: treat ownCloud's count as mostly Nextcloud. The roughly 392 ownCloud-only domains are the real migration prospects for anyone offering a move to Nextcloud.

The stack around it

The stack data covers the whole domain, usually the main website as well as the Nextcloud host. Apache serves 53.55% and Nginx 41.98%. WordPress runs on 41.68% of these domains, and Matomo Analytics on 7.38%, a privacy-first tool that fits owners who host their own software. On the Nextcloud host itself, our crawl also sees Underscore.js, Moment.js and Backbone.js on most servers; those come with Nextcloud's own interface.

Sales signal: if your tool flags Backbone.js on a company's cloud subdomain, that is Nextcloud, not a legacy web app.

What it costs

The server is free under the AGPL. Nextcloud's pricing page (checked 14 October 2026) sells Enterprise subscriptions from 100 users: Standard at €71.29, Premium at €104.99 and Ultimate at €204.75 per user a year, excluding VAT, with five years or more of maintenance on Premium and Ultimate.
