Anubis is the free proof-of-work gate Techaro wrote to keep AI scrapers off small websites, and our October 2026 crawl finds it on 2,949 live domains. That's after we removed 6,389 domains whose servers set Anubis's cookie but which never chose it: lapsed domains now serving Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese sports-streaming spam, parking and for-sale servers, a hotel-list network and an adult-chat network. Below is the list of companies that use Anubis, led by the Fedora Project, the FreeBSD Project, ECMWF and Sciences Po.

The users look like the people Anubis was written for: code forges, wikis, library catalogues, university repositories, archives and Dutch council information sites. Hosts decide a good part of it. Four hosting platforms switched Anubis on for every customer and account for 674 of the 2,949 domains (22.86%), mostly German promotional-products shops. Anubis ranks 15th of 38 in Bot Detection & CAPTCHA with a 0.05% share.

Anubis Usage Statistics

One point: 2,949 live domains in October 2026, the first month on the cleaned basis described at the end of this page, so the chart starts there. Our raw monthly totals aren't comparable with it: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection widens as Anubis releases add suffixes to its cookie names. Since we began tracking Anubis on 16 March 2026, 3,051 domains have dropped it on at least one hostname, a figure that includes the spam and parked domains; 140 of them still ran it on another hostname when we checked.

List of Companies Using Anubis

Who uses Anubis? This list of companies that use Anubis names 50 of the 1,574 matched organisations. 42 of them set Anubis's cookies when we opened them in October 2026. Most are institutions rather than businesses, and most run it on one subdomain: 11 rows are repositories, 8 are Dutch council information sites and 4 are French archive portals, so the Anubis customer is usually the team that runs a catalogue, archive or wiki.

Which Countries Use Anubis the Most?

Which countries use Anubis the most? The United States (342 matched companies) and Germany (321) are almost level, then the United Kingdom (231), India (146), France (60) and the Netherlands (42). Germany's position is unusual for a security tool. Two German shop platforms for promotional-products distributors run Anubis for all their customers (406 domains), and German university library catalogues add more. These counts cover the 1,574 Anubis domains we matched to a company.

Anubis Market Share Among Bot Detection & CAPTCHA

What is Anubis's market share? 0.05% of Bot Detection & CAPTCHA, 15th of the 38 technologies in that table, counted by domains at TechnologyChecker.io. The leaders do a different job. reCAPTCHA (3,617,019 domains, 57.94%), Cloudflare Turnstile (265,122, 4.25%) and hCaptcha (139,756, 2.24%) protect a form. Anubis sits in front of the whole site and makes every browser solve a small proof-of-work puzzle before it gets in, so a site needs a reason to accept that friction on every visit.

Anubis Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Anubis? Mostly small ones: 64.54% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 19.9% have 11 to 50. Many are print shops, self-storage sites and office-supplies dealers whose hosting platform switched Anubis on. Only 34 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and the named ones usually protect a catalogue, repository or wiki rather than a main website. Many users are universities, libraries, councils and open-source projects rather than companies.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (35.46%), then the 2000s (20.22%) and the 1990s (14.15%). Only 10.58% date from the 2020s and 7.31% were founded before 1960. That fits who runs it: established institutions and small firms on long-running hosting platforms, more than young start-ups.

What Industries Use Anubis the Most?

Advertising Services leads at 8.26%, then Retail (5.72%), Real Estate (4.61%) and Software Development (3.26%), based on our enriched company data. Advertising Services is LinkedIn's label for the promotional-products distributors on the German shop platforms. Further down, Higher Education (2.46%), Non-profit Organizations (2.07%) and Book and Periodical Publishing (1.99%) are the groups Anubis was written for: sites full of text that AI crawlers want.

Universities using Anubis put it in front of journals, repositories and catalogues: the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba's journals portal, PSL University's document portal and Uni Regensburg's library catalogue. Government bodies on Anubis include Knowsley Council's library site and Dutch councils such as Dordrecht, Den Helder and Gooise Meren, whose council information sites all come from one supplier, GO. Open-source projects using Anubis include the Fedora Project on its update system and the FreeBSD Project on its wiki.

Anubis Alternatives & Competitors

The rows above Anubis are CAPTCHAs that guard a form, so the table compares different jobs. Overlap is modest: 376 domains run Anubis and reCAPTCHA today, 203 run it with Cloudflare Turnstile and 18 with hCaptcha, usually a CAPTCHA on a contact form behind the Anubis gate. None of these pairs passes our switching tests. The closer substitute is a CDN's bot screen, and Anubis's own README says most sites can get by with Cloudflare and that Anubis is for sites that can't or won't use it. Cloudflare shows on 13.9% of Anubis domains.

How We Counted Anubis Customers

A domain counts here if a page on it sets one of Anubis's cookies, techaro.lol-anubis-auth or techaro.lol-anubis-cookie-verification (newer versions add a suffix to the name). 9,655 domains did so in October 2026. We set aside 317 whose latest page title was a for-sale, parking or gambling page.

Then we resolved every remaining domain, grouped them by page title, IP address and nameserver, and opened samples from each group. We removed 6,389 domains whose operators run Anubis on their own servers, so the cookie is real but no site owner chose it. In our check, these groups measured: lapsed domains serving sports-streaming or World Cup spam, about 4,126 (Chinese 3,714, Thai 221, Vietnamese 191); parking and for-sale servers, about 1,659, including a German parking host behind 1,192 domains that also answers for gambling redirect domains; a hotel-list network, 268; an adult-chat network, 144; and domains that no longer resolve, 197. Those sizes come from our check a few days earlier and add up to a few more than the final cut, because a handful had since dropped out or matched the title filter.

That leaves the 2,949 behind every chart, table and percentage on this page. They include 674 domains (22.86%) on four hosting platforms that switched Anubis on for every customer: two German promotional-products shop platforms (406), a US self-storage website provider (210) and a UK office-supplies platform (58). We kept those, because the cookie is on the customer's own site. On 20 random domains from the raw count, 16 fell in the groups we removed.

Expert Analysis: Anubis Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler behind these numbers, and Anubis is the clearest case I've seen of a raw count that measures servers rather than buyers. Our October 2026 crawl finds Anubis on 2,949 live domains, 15th of 38 in Bot Detection & CAPTCHA, after a cleaning pass that removed more than twice that many. Anubis is a reverse proxy: it sits in front of a site, makes the browser solve a proof-of-work puzzle and hands back a cookie named techaro.lol-anubis-auth. Whoever runs the server decides, so one operator can put it on thousands of domains at once.

What we removed

Of 9,655 raw domains, we resolved every one and opened samples from each cluster. The biggest group, about 4,126 domains, were lapsed domains serving Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese sports-streaming and World Cup spam; 16 of the 17 we could load set Anubis cookies while serving the spam page. About 1,659 resolved to parking and for-sale servers, mostly a German parking host behind 1,192 of them, whose parked small-business domains and gambling redirects set the cookie too. A hotel-list network added 268 and an adult-chat network 144. With the domains that no longer resolve, 6,389 domains came out.

"Anubis protects whatever sits behind the server. When a spam operator or a parking company installs it, every domain they hold shows up as an Anubis site, and that was two thirds of the raw count." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: never prospect from a raw Anubis count. The cleaned 2,949 is the list; the rest is spam and parking inventory.

Who runs it by choice

The users fit what Anubis's README says it is for: protecting "the small internet" from AI companies' crawlers. In our crawl Anubis sits on a git. hostname on 64 domains, a wiki. hostname on 21 and a library. hostname on 18. Our named list is mostly institutions: 11 repositories, 8 Dutch council information sites, 4 French archive portals, plus the Fedora Project's update system, FreeBSD's wiki and ECMWF's chart site.

A lot of it is still a host's decision. All the Dutch council sites we opened say they are "een oplossing van GO.", a single supplier, and 15 Anubis domains resolve to the same block of addresses. Thirteen French archive portals share one server, and the one we inspected runs Ligeo. Four platforms account for 674 domains (22.86%): two German shop platforms for promotional-products distributors (406), a US self-storage website provider (210) and a UK office-supplies platform (58).

Sales signal: the buyer for anything Anubis-adjacent is often the hosting supplier, not the institution. One conversation with a library-hosting or council-platform vendor covers dozens of sites.

One point on the chart

The chart shows a single October 2026 point because that's the first month on the cleaned basis. Our raw totals moved with our crawl as much as with adoption: the domain set turns over every month, and our detection widens as Anubis versions add suffixes to the cookie name. Since 16 March 2026, 3,051 domains have dropped Anubis, a figure that includes the spam and parked domains, and 140 of them still ran it on another hostname when we checked.

Sales signal: treat Anubis users as a few thousand self-hosters, and track them by host and title, not by the raw domain count.

Who the users are

The United States (342 matched companies) and Germany (321) are almost level, then the UK (231), India (146), France (60) and the Netherlands (42). Germany's place comes partly from the promotional-products platforms; Advertising Services, LinkedIn's label for those distributors, leads the industries at 8.26%. 64.54% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees, and only 34 have more than 1,000. Higher Education (2.46%), Non-profit Organizations (2.07%) and Book and Periodical Publishing (1.99%) are small shares, but they're where the named users sit.

Sales signal: for an Anubis-adjacent product, the US, Germany and the UK are the markets, and universities and publishers are the segment worth naming in the pitch.

Switching: none to report

No pair passes our switching tests. 376 domains run Anubis and reCAPTCHA today, 203 run it with Cloudflare Turnstile and 18 with hCaptcha. These are layers, not replacements: Anubis gates the site and the CAPTCHA guards a form behind it.

"The organisations that chose Anubis for themselves are the ones that won't hand their traffic to a CDN: libraries, archives, code forges. In our crawl that's about three thousand domains, not ten thousand." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a CAPTCHA vendor sells alongside Anubis. The competitor is a managed bot-protection service, pitched to sites tired of running their own.

The stack around it

Across the 2,949 domains, WordPress is on 30.52%, Google Analytics on 33.74% and PHP on 25.74%. Cloudflare is on only 13.9%, which fits Anubis's pitch as an option for sites that won't use Cloudflare. Matomo (4.17%) and Plausible (1.32%) show a privacy-minded minority, and Drupal (2.51%) marks the universities and councils.

Sales signal: self-hosters who chose Anubis over a CDN will want tools they can run themselves. Pitch open-source or self-hosted analytics, search and monitoring.

What it costs

Anubis is released under the MIT licence, and Techaro's site (checked October 2026) says it is free and self-hosted. Techaro lists a commercial version, BotStopper, built on Anubis with managed deployment and support, at US$50 a month, marked as coming soon. Techaro also says not to use Anubis against network-level DDoS attacks or for clients that can't run JavaScript, such as API clients and RSS readers.

Sales signal: the paid tier is new and cheap, so managed hosting of Anubis is an open niche for hosts that already run it for customers.

Key takeaways

1. 2,949 domains after removing 6,389 spam, parked, hotel-list and adult-chat domains whose servers run Anubis.

2. The users are forges, wikis, catalogues, repositories, archives and council sites.

3. Hosts decide a good share: GO. for Dutch councils, a Ligeo host for French archives, and four platforms with 674 domains.

4. The US and Germany are almost level; Advertising Services leads because of the German promo shops.

5. No switching corridor; CAPTCHAs run alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Anubis?

Code forges, wikis, library catalogues, university repositories, archives and councils, the small sites AI scrapers hit hardest. Named users include the Fedora Project, the FreeBSD Project, ECMWF and Sciences Po. Our October 2026 crawl finds Anubis on 2,949 domains once spam and parked domains are removed, and hosting platforms put it on 674 of those.

How many customers does Anubis have?

Anubis is free, self-hosted software, so it has users rather than customers. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 2,949 live domains, 1,574 of them matched to an organisation. We removed 6,389 more that set its cookie only because a spam, parking, hotel-list or adult-chat operator runs it on the server.

What is Anubis's market share?

0.05% of Bot Detection & CAPTCHA, 15th of the 38 technologies in that table, counted by domains. The comparison is loose: reCAPTCHA (57.94%), Cloudflare Turnstile (4.25%) and hCaptcha (2.24%) guard forms, while Anubis gates a whole site. It's a different, much smaller job: sites that want to keep AI crawlers out entirely.

What are the best alternatives to Anubis?

Anubis's own README suggests Cloudflare for most sites, with Anubis for those that can't or won't use it. A CAPTCHA such as hCaptcha or Cloudflare Turnstile fits if you only need to protect a form. In our data, 203 domains run Anubis with Turnstile and 376 with reCAPTCHA today, so many sites use both layers.

Which countries use Anubis the most?

The United States, with 342 matched companies, and Germany with 321 are almost level, then the United Kingdom (231), India (146), France (60) and the Netherlands (42). Germany is high because two German shop platforms for promotional-products distributors run Anubis for all 406 of their domains. These counts cover the 1,574 domains we matched to a company.

What size companies use Anubis?

Mostly small ones: 64.54% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 19.9% have 11 to 50. Many are print shops, self-storage sites and dealers on hosting platforms that switched it on. Only 34 matched companies have more than 1,000 staff, and the large users are often universities, libraries and councils.

How old are companies that use Anubis?

The largest group was founded in the 2010s (35.46%), then the 2000s (20.22%) and the 1990s (14.15%). Only 10.58% were founded in the 2020s and 7.31% before 1960. The users lean to established institutions and small firms on long-running hosting platforms rather than start-ups, which matches our named list of universities, councils, libraries and archives.

What is the ideal customer profile for Anubis?

A public, text-heavy site that AI crawlers hammer and that can't or won't sit behind Cloudflare: a library catalogue, a university repository, a code forge, a wiki or an archive. The second profile is a host or platform that runs many such sites and switches Anubis on for all of them, like the suppliers behind Dutch council sites.

What is Anubis from Techaro?

Anubis is open-source bot protection from Techaro, written by Xe Iaso and released under the MIT licence. Techaro's site calls it free and self-hosted. It runs in front of a website as a reverse proxy, makes each browser solve a small proof-of-work challenge, and then sets a cookie so the visitor gets through. That cookie is what we detect.

How does Anubis Firewall work?

Anubis checks each request against bot policies, then sends the browser a JavaScript proof-of-work puzzle to solve in the background. A solved puzzle earns a signed cookie, techaro.lol-anubis-auth in our crawl. While it works, visitors see a page titled Making sure you're not a bot!, the page our browser met on FreeBSD's wiki.

Is Anubis free?

Yes. Techaro's site says Anubis is free and open source and that you host it yourself; the code is released under the MIT licence. Techaro also announces BotStopper, a commercial version built on Anubis with enterprise features, managed deployment and support, at US$50 a month, though it lists BotStopper as coming soon. Checked October 2026.

Who does Anubis actually stop?

Anything that won't run its JavaScript challenge, which is mainly scrapers. Anubis's README warns that it is a bit of a nuclear response that can block smaller scrapers and good bots such as the Internet Archive unless you allowlist them. Techaro's site says not to use it for API clients or RSS readers that can't run JavaScript.

Can Anubis stop DDoS attacks?

Not the network kind. Techaro's own FAQ says not to use Anubis for network-level volumetric DDoS attacks. It helps against floods of ordinary page requests from scrapers, since each new visitor must solve a puzzle first, but a large attack still reaches the server Anubis runs on. Most Anubis sites in our crawl are catalogues and forges, not targets of that scale.

Anubis vs Cloudflare: which should you use?

Anubis's README says most sites can probably get by with Cloudflare, and Anubis is for those that can't or won't use it. The trade is control: Anubis is free and runs on your own server, Cloudflare runs your traffic through its network. 13.9% of Anubis domains in our crawl also show Cloudflare.
