Companies Using AWS WAF
Our October 2026 crawl finds AWS WAF's JavaScript on 12,756 live domains. That is after we removed 4,953 domains that sat under five shared setups: Northwestern Mutual's advisor sites (2,128), Flower Shop Network florists (983), a Vietnamese-language gambling network (920), .ru domains that redirect to Aviasales (493) and gambling clones carrying Booking.com's ID (429). AWS WAF's script loads from an address with an integration ID, and the domains left still group into about 1,300 IDs. 131 IDs with ten or more domains cover 61.55% of them, led by creator merch stores on Spring, UK GP practices and promotional-products distributors. Below is the list of companies that use AWS WAF under their own setup, among them Amazon, NVIDIA, Toyota, Atlassian and State Farm.
AWS WAF is Amazon's web application firewall. A site only shows up here when it uses the part that reaches the browser: the silent challenge, the CAPTCHA page, or the SDK that AWS tells customers to put on login, checkout and sign-up pages. A firewall that only filters requests at the edge leaves nothing in the page, so this count is a floor. AWS WAF ranks 8th of 38 in Bot Detection & CAPTCHA with a 0.2% share, a long way behind reCAPTCHA's 3,617,019 domains.

AWS WAF Usage Statistics
One point: 12,756 live domains in October 2026, counted after the removals described at the end of this page, so the chart starts there. Our earlier monthly totals aren't comparable with it. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection of AWS WAF's script widened after we started tracking it on 4 August 2026. Since that date 5,421 domains have dropped it on at least one hostname, a figure that includes the removed fleets. When we checked, 236 of them still ran it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use AWS WAF the Most?
Which countries use AWS WAF the most? The United States, with 2,830 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (1,229), Australia (318), Canada (233), the Netherlands (199) and Germany (190). The UK figure is high for an American cloud product, about one British company for every 2.3 American ones, and one platform explains part of it: 278 UK GP practices share a single AWS WAF setup. English-speaking countries (the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand) hold 4,739 of the 6,481 companies we matched.
Share of the 6,481 AWS WAF domains we matched to a company record — 50.8% of the 12,756 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
AWS WAF Market Share Among Bot Detection & CAPTCHA
What is AWS WAF's market share? 0.2% of Bot Detection & CAPTCHA, 8th of the 38 technologies in that table, counted by domains at TechnologyChecker.io. reCAPTCHA holds 57.94% with 3,617,019 domains and Cloudflare Turnstile 4.25% with 265,122. Those two are widgets a site drops into its own forms, while AWS WAF only appears in our crawl when a site turns on its browser challenge or SDK, so the shares compare loosely. Against the products that work the same way, AWS WAF's 12,756 is nearly 5 times PerimeterX's 2,672 (16th) and 3.3 times DataDome's 3,845 (12th).
Top Competitors by Market Share
AWS WAF Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use AWS WAF? Mostly small ones, which you wouldn't guess from an enterprise firewall. 56.46% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 21.91% have 11 to 50. That small end is where the platforms are: GP practices, estate agents, promotional-products distributors and creators whose website provider switched AWS WAF on for them. 292 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and the large names on our list tend to run their own setup on a sign-in or account page, such as id.atlassian.com or NatWest's online-banking login.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (32.88%), then the 2000s (18.92%) and the 2020s (12.23%). The old end is thick for a security product: 10.21% were founded before 1960, and 1990s founders add 11.84%. Banks, insurers and universities fill it, among them the Royal Bank of Scotland (1727), New York University (1831) and State Farm (1922), which put AWS WAF in front of logins rather than marketing pages.
What Industries Use AWS WAF the Most?
Real Estate leads at 8.28%, then Retail (7.32%), Medical Practices (7.11%) and Advertising Services (4.51%), based on our enriched company data. Shared setups prop up three of the four. About 75% of the Real Estate matches sit under the IDs of Compass, Sotheby's International Realty and HAR.com, about 70% of Medical Practices are UK GP practices on one platform, and 192 of the 250 Advertising Services matches are promotional-products distributors under one ID. Retail is more spread out: about half of its 406 matches sit under an ID with ten or more domains.
Banks using AWS WAF put it in front of sign-in: NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland on their online-banking logins, Monzo on its web app, PrivatBank on privatbank.ua. Universities using AWS WAF include New York University, on 14 NYU hostnames under one setup, and Deakin University on its applicant portal. Retailers on AWS WAF include Holland & Barrett and Debenhams, whose setup also covers Warehouse, Oasis, Coast, boohoo and PrettyLittleThing domains, 53 in all.
AWS WAF Alternatives & Competitors
The table ranks by domains, so reCAPTCHA (3,617,019) and Cloudflare Turnstile (265,122) dwarf everything, but they're form widgets, not firewalls. The fairer comparison is with the bot-management products that also run a script in the browser. PerimeterX has 2,672 domains and DataDome 3,845, both after removing domains that only carry them through another company's account. Overlap is small: 72 domains run AWS WAF and PerimeterX today, 36 run AWS WAF and DataDome, and 2,188 run AWS WAF alongside reCAPTCHA, usually a CAPTCHA on a form behind the firewall. None of these pairs passes our switching tests.

These percentages are of all 12,756 live AWS WAF domains. Amazon CloudFront runs on 54.53% and Amazon Web Services hosting shows on 40.84%, which fits AWS WAF's design: you attach it to a CloudFront distribution or a load balancer. Amazon S3 is on 9.56%. Cloudflare still appears on 20.7%, so about one site in five runs Cloudflare in front of or beside its AWS setup. Google Analytics runs on 44.89% and Matomo on 5.23%. Other firewalls are rare: Imperva on 0.27% and Sucuri on 0.08%.

How We Counted AWS WAF Customers
A domain counts here if a page on it loads a script from awswaf.com: AWS WAF's silent challenge, its CAPTCHA page, or the JavaScript integration SDK. Sites that use AWS WAF only at the edge, without any browser challenge, load nothing we can see, so they aren't counted. 18,160 domains passed that test in October 2026. We set aside 451 whose latest page title was a for-sale or gambling page.
Then we removed 4,953 domains by integration ID, the identifier at the start of AWS WAF's script address. Domains that share an ID share one AWS WAF setup, so these five were one customer counted many times, or junk: Northwestern Mutual's advisor sites (2,128), Flower Shop Network florists (983), a Vietnamese-language gambling network (920), .ru domains that redirect to Aviasales with an affiliate marker, many of them former casino domains (493), and gambling clones that carry Booking.com's ID (429; Booking's own booking.* domains stay). That leaves the 12,756 behind every chart, table and percentage on this page.
The rest still clusters, and we left it in. We read an ID on 10,022 of the 12,756 domains and found about 1,300 IDs: 735 cover one domain, 434 cover two to nine (1,435 domains), and 131 cover ten or more (7,852 domains, 61.55%). The largest are creator merch stores on Spring (742), UK GP practices on one platform (642), promotional-products distributors (634), Compass agent domains (362) and Sotheby's International Realty affiliates (322). Of the 6,481 matched companies, 3,964 sit under an ID with ten or more domains. On 2,051 domains (16.08%) the latest page title is Human Verification, AWS WAF's CAPTCHA page, and 2,440 more have a blank title, which is what a silent challenge returns: the detection holds on those pages, but the rest of their stack is hidden from us.
Expert Analysis: AWS WAF Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that produced these numbers, and AWS WAF was the oddest product in this batch to count. Our October 2026 crawl finds its JavaScript on 12,756 live domains, 6,481 of them matched to a company, 8th of 38 in Bot Detection & CAPTCHA. A domain counts when a page loads a script from awswaf.com: the silent challenge, the CAPTCHA page or the integration SDK. A web ACL that only filters requests at the edge leaves nothing in the HTML, so everything below is a floor, and it is a floor tilted towards sites that turned on bot features.
Domains are not customers here
Every AWS WAF script loads from an address that starts with an integration ID, and AWS's documentation says you integrate using the URL of the web ACL you want to protect. Group domains by that ID and the picture changes. Before cleaning, 14 IDs covered about half of the raw count. We removed five of them: Northwestern Mutual's ID on 2,128 advisor domains (eight of eight we sampled loaded Northwestern Mutual's own assets or redirected to its advisor pages), Flower Shop Network's 983 florists, a 920-domain Vietnamese-language gambling network, 493 .ru domains redirecting to Aviasales, and 429 gambling clones carrying Booking.com's ID. That's 4,953 domains.
What remains still clusters. We read an ID on 10,022 of the 12,756 domains and found about 1,300 IDs. 735 cover one domain each, while the 131 IDs with ten or more domains cover 61.55%. The biggest are creator merch stores on Spring (742), a UK GP-practice platform (642, a challenge on every one we opened), promotional-products distributors (634), Compass agent domains that redirect to compass.com (362) and Sotheby's International Realty affiliates that redirect to sothebysrealty.com (322).
"Eighteen thousand raw domains sounded like eighteen thousand buyers. Group them by the integration ID in the script address and you find about 1,300 AWS WAF setups, and a handful of platforms carry most of the weight." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: dedupe an AWS WAF list by integration ID, not by root domain. A GP-website provider with 642 practices is one deal, and the practices themselves never chose AWS.
One point on the chart
The chart shows a single October 2026 point, 12,756, because that's the first month on the cleaned basis. Our earlier totals moved for two reasons besides adoption: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and new ones in, and our detection of the AWS WAF script widened after we began tracking it on 4 August 2026. Since then 5,421 domains have dropped it on at least one hostname, a figure that includes the removed fleets, and 236 of those still ran it on another hostname when we checked. I wouldn't call either number a trend yet.
Sales signal: size the AWS WAF market by setups, about 1,300 we could read, and give the monthly domain count little weight.
Who runs their own setup
On the company side the base looks small: 56.46% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees. That's the platforms talking. The named companies tell a different story. Of the 50 on our list, 23 run AWS WAF on a subdomain and 11 of those are sign-in, registration or application pages: id.atlassian.com, customer-registration.statefarm.com, passport.amazon.jobs, NatWest's and RBS's online-banking logins, Monzo's web sign-in, Deakin University's applicant portal, Medibank's member login. AWS recommends exactly that, putting the challenge script on login, checkout and account-creation pages. 292 companies have more than 1,000 staff.
We also left 37 candidates off the list because the script came from someone else's setup. Careers sites on Clinch share three IDs between them, so WTW's, Equinix's and Toast's job sites run Clinch's AWS WAF, not their own. M&S Bank's pages carry HSBC's setup. Huntsman's product site shares one setup with Knowde and ten other chemical companies.
Sales signal: the buyer inside a large company is the identity or fraud team that owns the login, not the web team. Pitch account-takeover and sign-up fraud, not page speed.
Industries follow the platforms
Real Estate leads at 8.28%, then Retail (7.32%), Medical Practices (7.11%) and Advertising Services (4.51%). Three of those four are mostly shared setups: about 75% of Real Estate sits under Compass, Sotheby's International Realty and HAR.com IDs, about 70% of Medical Practices is the GP platform, and 192 of the 250 Advertising Services matches are promotional-products distributors under one ID. Geography tilts British for the same reason. The UK has 1,229 matched companies against 2,830 in the US, and English-speaking countries hold 4,739 of 6,481.
Sales signal: the vertical opportunity is the platform layer. Website providers for GP practices, estate agents and promotional-products distributors have already decided to run a WAF for their whole fleet, and a pitch to them covers hundreds of sites.
Switching: there isn't any to report
We found no switching corridor that passes our tests. 2,188 domains run AWS WAF and reCAPTCHA today, 92 run it with Cloudflare Turnstile, 72 with PerimeterX and 36 with DataDome. Most pairs are complements: a CAPTCHA on a form behind the firewall, or a dedicated bot vendor on one property and AWS WAF on another. Small numbers, and I won't dress them up.
"The companies that run AWS WAF themselves put it where the money is: logins, registrations and account pages. The marketing site usually doesn't have it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: a bot-management vendor selling against AWS WAF is usually selling an add-on to it. Lead with what AWS WAF's targeted Bot Control costs per request at scale.
The stack around it
Amazon CloudFront runs on 54.53% of live AWS WAF domains and AWS hosting shows on 40.84%, which is what you'd expect, since AWS WAF attaches to CloudFront or a load balancer. Cloudflare is on 20.7%, so about a fifth of these sites run Cloudflare in front of or beside AWS. Google Analytics is on 44.89%. Other WAFs barely register: Imperva is on 0.27% and Sucuri on 0.08%. One caveat: on 2,051 domains our crawler only saw the CAPTCHA page, so the real stack there is hidden and these shares run low.
Sales signal: the Cloudflare-plus-AWS pattern is a consolidation conversation. Those sites pay for two edges and two rule sets.
What it costs
AWS's pricing page (checked October 2026) lists $5 per web ACL a month, $1 per rule a month and $0.60 per million requests. Bot Control adds $10 a month per web ACL, plus $1 per million requests at the common level after 10 million free, or $10 per million at the targeted level after 1 million free. CAPTCHA attempts cost $0.40 per thousand. The browser SDK we detect is the piece AWS pairs with targeted Bot Control and its fraud-control rules, but plain CAPTCHA and Challenge rules load AWS WAF's script too, so we can't tell from the page which tier a site pays for.
Sales signal: high-traffic sites on targeted Bot Control pay per request, and their bills grow with traffic. That's the opening for flat-priced alternatives.
Key takeaways
1. 12,756 domains after removing 4,953 under five shared IDs; about 1,300 integration IDs where we could read one.
2. 131 IDs with ten or more domains still cover 61.55% of the count, led by Spring merch stores, a GP platform and promo distributors.
3. Large companies put AWS WAF on logins and account pages; 11 of our 50 named rows do.
4. Small-company shares come from platforms: GP practices, estate agents, distributors, creators.
5. No switching corridor passes our tests; overlaps with other bot tools are complements.
How to use this list
Group rows by root domain and by integration ID, drop the platform fleets you don't sell to, and filter on company size above 1,000 for the direct buyers. For the full list of AWS WAF domains with company, size and stack data, explore TechnologyChecker.io, and our bot traffic statistics cover the traffic these firewalls are filtering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses AWS WAF?
Two groups. Large companies run their own setup, often on a login or account page: Amazon, NVIDIA, Toyota, Atlassian, State Farm, NatWest and the BBC. Many more small businesses get it from a platform: UK GP practices, Compass agents and promotional-products distributors each share one setup. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 12,756 domains.
How many customers does AWS WAF have?
We count 12,756 domains loading AWS WAF's browser script in October 2026, and 6,481 of them match a company. Customers are fewer: the domains we could trace sit under about 1,300 integration IDs, and 131 IDs cover 61.55% of the count. AWS doesn't publish a customer count, and sites that use AWS WAF only at the edge are invisible to us.
What is AWS WAF's market share?
0.2% of Bot Detection & CAPTCHA, 8th of the 38 technologies in that table, counted by domains. reCAPTCHA has 57.94% and Cloudflare Turnstile 4.25%, but those are form widgets. Among bot-management products that also run in the browser, AWS WAF's 12,756 domains are nearly 5 times PerimeterX's 2,672 and 3.3 times DataDome's 3,845.
What are the best alternatives to AWS WAF?
If you're not on AWS, Cloudflare's WAF is the usual swap, and Cloudflare already shows on 20.7% of AWS WAF domains. Akamai and Imperva sell enterprise WAFs. For bot defence specifically, DataDome and PerimeterX are the closest in our data. For a form CAPTCHA, reCAPTCHA or Turnstile is cheaper. Only 72 domains run AWS WAF and PerimeterX together.
Which countries use AWS WAF the most?
The United States, with 2,830 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (1,229), Australia (318), Canada (233), the Netherlands (199) and Germany (190). The UK share is high, about one British company for every 2.3 American ones, partly because 278 GP practices share one platform's setup. English-speaking countries hold 4,739 of the 6,481 matched companies.
What size companies use AWS WAF?
Mostly small ones: 56.46% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 21.91% have 11 to 50. Many of those got AWS WAF from their website platform, such as GP practices, estate agents and promotional-products distributors. 292 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and the big names tend to run their own setup on login pages.
How old are companies that use AWS WAF?
The largest group was founded in the 2010s (32.88%), then the 2000s (18.92%) and the 2020s (12.23%). An unusually large 10.21% were founded before 1960, mostly banks, insurers and universities such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, New York University and State Farm. Those older firms usually protect a login or account page rather than a marketing site.
What is the ideal customer profile for AWS WAF?
Two profiles. The direct buyer is a large company already on AWS that protects logins, sign-ups and checkout, like Atlassian, State Farm or Monzo. The other is a platform that serves hundreds of small sites, a GP website provider, a brokerage's agent-site system or a merch storefront, and switches AWS WAF on for all of them at once.
What is AWS WAF used for?
AWS WAF filters web requests before they reach an application on AWS, blocking things like SQL injection, cross-site scripting and floods from one address. Its bot features add a silent browser challenge and a CAPTCHA. Those are what we detect: in our October 2026 crawl, 2,051 domains showed us AWS WAF's CAPTCHA page, titled Human Verification.
How expensive is AWS WAF?
AWS's pricing page lists $5 per web ACL a month, $1 per rule a month and $0.60 per million requests. Bot Control adds a $10 monthly subscription per web ACL, with request fees of $1 per million on the common level after 10 million free, or $10 per million on the targeted level. CAPTCHA attempts cost $0.40 per thousand. Checked October 2026.
What is the difference between AWS WAF and Shield?
AWS's decision guide splits them by layer. AWS WAF works at the application layer, filtering HTTP requests with rules you write, and you must set it up. AWS Shield protects against DDoS floods at the network and transport layers, and Shield Standard is included for every AWS account. Shield Advanced costs extra and can use AWS WAF for application-layer attacks.
Is AWS CloudFront a WAF?
No. CloudFront is Amazon's content delivery network, and AWS WAF is a separate service you attach to it, or to a load balancer, API Gateway or AppSync. They go together in practice: Amazon CloudFront runs on 54.53% of the domains where we detect AWS WAF's script, the most common technology in that stack.
Why does a website show a Human Verification page?
That's AWS WAF's CAPTCHA page. The site's owner set a rule that sends some visitors to a puzzle, often traffic that looks automated. Our crawler got that page instead of the real site on 2,051 domains in October 2026, 16.08% of those we count, so for them we can see AWS WAF but little else.
Can you use AWS WAF and Cloudflare together?
Yes, and plenty of sites do. Cloudflare shows on 20.7% of live AWS WAF domains in our crawl, usually Cloudflare in front as the CDN or DNS layer with AWS WAF attached to the AWS load balancer or CloudFront behind it. The cost is two rule sets to maintain, and two places a real visitor can be blocked.
