Companies Using gunicorn
gunicorn is a Python WSGI HTTP server, and its own deploy guide strongly recommends running it behind a proxy server such as Nginx. So the 7,728 domains our October 2026 crawl finds answering with gunicorn's Server header are the ones where it faces the internet itself, or sits behind a proxy that passes the header through. That makes the count a floor: 15th of the 70 servers we track in Web Servers, with 0.05%. Below is the list of companies that use gunicorn, with size, country, industry and stack. Tate, IDEXX and the UK National Archives' Find Case Law service all answer from it.
About one domain in six is an Artlogic gallery website. 1,385 domains announce gunicorn 19.10.0, and 37 of the 40 we loaded were sites built by Artlogic, which sells websites to galleries and artists. That's why artists, art dealers and fine art make up 16.65% of matched companies. Restaurant sites from SpotOn, on 19.9.0, add roughly 300 more. Django runs on 21.76% of gunicorn domains.

gunicorn Usage Statistics
Our crawl reads 4,646 gunicorn domains in June 2026, 6,237 in July, 6,886 in August, 7,465 in September and 7,728 in October. Don't read that as gunicorn growing. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so most of the climb reflects changes on our side rather than a surge in adoption. Since we began tracking gunicorn in March 2026, 667 domains have dropped it on a hostname, and about one in 11 of those still shows it on another.

Which Countries Use gunicorn the Most?
Which countries use gunicorn the most? The United States, with 1,256 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (514), Germany (267), France (238), Brazil (151) and India (145). The UK weighs more here than on Apache's or Kestrel's profile: one British company for every 2.44 American ones, against 2.72 on Apache's profile and 3.74 on Kestrel's. Switzerland (107) and Belgium (86) also make the top 12. These counts cover the 4,393 gunicorn domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 4,393 gunicorn domains we matched to a company record — 56.8% of the 7,728 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
gunicorn Market Share Among Web Servers
What is gunicorn's market share? 0.05% of Web Servers, 15th of the 70 we track, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The comparison with Apache HTTP Server (37.16%) and Nginx (35.33%) isn't like for like. The share counts the front-most Server header, and gunicorn normally sits behind Nginx, which answers in its place. Read the 7,728 as the deployments that let gunicorn speak for itself.
Top Competitors by Market Share
gunicorn Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use gunicorn? Mostly small ones. 65.92% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.83% have 11 to 50, so 86.75% have 50 staff or fewer, which fits single-gallery and single-restaurant sites. 99 companies have more than 1,000 staff (2.39%), and at those gunicorn usually runs one application: Find Case Law at the UK National Archives, Mintel's client portal, G Adventures' developer API.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (38.21%), and 23.06% in the 2020s. That 2020s share is well above the 15.7% on Apache's profile and 15.55% on Kestrel's, so the businesses behind gunicorn headers are younger than those behind the big general-purpose servers. 22.34% were founded before 2000.
What Industries Use gunicorn the Most?
Artists and Writers lead at 9.68%, with Retail Art Dealers (4.4%) and Fine Art (2.57%) close behind, based on our enriched company data. That art cluster, 16.65% of matched companies, comes from one platform: Artlogic's gallery websites answer with gunicorn. Software Development (6.49%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.07%) are the developers running their own Python apps.
Galleries using gunicorn mostly come through Artlogic: Berggruen Gallery, Timothy Taylor and Gazelli Art House all answered with gunicorn 19.10.0 and Artlogic's markers. Non-profits on gunicorn often get it from a fundraising or advocacy platform: Institut Pasteur and Groupe SOS take donations on RGive pages, and the American Library Association runs its action centre on Quorum. Museums using gunicorn include Tate, on www.tate.org.uk.
gunicorn Alternatives & Competitors
The table compares gunicorn with servers that usually stand in front of it. Nginx (35.33%) and Apache HTTP Server (37.16%) are the proxies gunicorn's deploy guide has in mind, Caddy (0.47%) is a newer one, and Kestrel (0.18%) is the .NET counterpart. The overlaps are layered setups, not migrations: 482 domains show gunicorn and Apache today, 453 gunicorn and Nginx and 378 gunicorn and Caddy. In our header check, sites behind Caddy sent two Server headers, Caddy's and gunicorn's.

Expert Analysis: gunicorn Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

gunicorn is a server you aren't supposed to see. Its own deploy guide strongly recommends putting a proxy such as Nginx in front, and when that's done, Nginx answers and gunicorn's Server header never reaches the outside world. So a domain counts on this page only when gunicorn speaks for itself. As of our October 2026 crawl that's 7,728 domains, 15th of the 70 web servers we track, and 4,393 of them match a company. It's a small, odd sample of Python's web footprint, and the oddest part is who's in it.
What the header shows
I checked 24 random domains from the list in October. 16 answered with gunicorn's header directly, two of them with a Via header showing a proxy that passed it through. Three sat behind Caddy and sent two Server headers, Caddy's and gunicorn's. Three redirected to another domain that answered with gunicorn, one was a disabled site and one didn't respond. None was behind Cloudflare. So the count is real, and it's the exposed edge of a much larger installed base.
Sales signal: a gunicorn header means the application server meets visitors with nothing to buffer slow clients. For proxy, CDN and web-security vendors, that's a specific gap to raise.
Two platforms carry a fifth of the count
1,385 domains announce gunicorn 19.10.0, and when I loaded 40 of them, 37 were gallery sites built by Artlogic, which sells websites and inventory software to the art world; their pages carry a "Site by Artlogic" credit and Artlogic-hosted images. That's roughly 1,280 Artlogic sites, about one domain in six, and it's why Artists and Writers, Retail Art Dealers and Fine Art add up to 16.65% of matched companies. The second platform is SpotOn, the restaurant point-of-sale company: 296 gunicorn domains load SpotOn's scripts, and 14 of the 15 I sampled ran gunicorn 19.9.0. Smaller carriers are the RGive donation platform (56 domains) and Stageplaza's internship sites (23).
Sales signal: the account for most gallery and restaurant rows is the platform, not the gallery or the restaurant. Sell infrastructure to Artlogic and SpotOn; sell art-market or hospitality software to their customers.
Growth trajectory
The chart reads 4,646 in June 2026, then 6,237, 6,886, 7,465 and 7,728 in October. I wouldn't call that growth. The domain set we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen over time; both moved the line through September. Since March 2026, 667 domains have dropped gunicorn on a hostname, and about one in 11 of those still shows it on another.
"Most gunicorn installs are invisible to us, and that's how the project wants it. The ones we see either skipped the proxy or belong to a platform that never changed its defaults." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: size Python's web market from Django and the hosting data, not from this count. Use this list for the exposed deployments.
Who runs gunicorn
65.92% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees and 86.75% have 50 or fewer. They're also young. 23.06% were founded in the 2020s, against 15.7% on Apache's profile, and the 99 companies above 1,000 staff usually run a single application on gunicorn. The UK National Archives serves Find Case Law from gunicorn, Mintel its client portal, G Adventures its developer API, Caribbean Airlines its Jetpak service. Tate, IDEXX, Aveanna Healthcare and JTEKT North America answer from it on their main sites.
Sales signal: outside the platforms, a gunicorn header at a large organisation marks an in-house Python team that shipped something public. That team buys hosting, monitoring and developer tooling.
Layered, not switched
We test every server pair for switching, and none of gunicorn's passed. 482 domains show gunicorn and Apache today, 453 gunicorn and Nginx, 378 gunicorn and Caddy and 8 gunicorn and Kestrel. Most domains ever seen with both still run both, which is what layering looks like: a proxy on one hostname or in front, the Python app behind. The Caddy pairs are the clearest case, since Caddy passed gunicorn's header along with its own.
"Seeing gunicorn next to Nginx isn't a migration. It's the architecture gunicorn's documentation asks for, caught half-configured." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: pitch the missing layer, not a replacement. Teams exposing gunicorn already chose their framework; they may not have chosen their edge.
The stack: Django on AWS
Of the 7,832 live gunicorn domains left after we removed for-sale and gambling pages, 21.76% run Django, the framework we find most often behind a gunicorn header. Amazon Web Services shows on 13.93%, Azure on 5.68% and OVHcloud on 2.81%. Google Analytics is on 53.26%, and Matomo (2.36%), Plausible (1.23%) and Umami (1.07%) form a privacy-minded minority.
Sales signal: Django agencies and AWS partners have the clearest fit. Privacy-focused analytics vendors already have a foothold.
Versions: nothing newer than 2020 announces itself
gunicorn removed its version from the Server header in 20.1.0, released in February 2021, so every version we can read is 20.0.4 or older. In the 45 days to mid-October 2026 we saw a gunicorn header on 7,488 domains, and 2,135 of them carried a version: 19.10.0 on 1,408, 19.9.0 on 409, 20.0.4 on 144 and older releases on the rest, including 15 from the 0.x series. gunicorn's changelog lists the fix for CVE-2024-1135, a request smuggling flaw NVD rates 7.5, in 22.0.0 from April 2024. Every versioned domain predates it, unless a distribution patched the package without changing the number.
Sales signal: most of the 2,135 sit on two platforms, so the patch is one deployment each for Artlogic and SpotOn. The rest are individual teams on releases from 2021 or earlier.
Key takeaways
1. 7,728 domains expose gunicorn's header, 15th of 70 web servers and a floor for real use.
2. Artlogic gallery sites are roughly 1,280 of the domains; SpotOn's restaurant sites add about 300.
3. 86.75% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff, and 23.06% were founded in the 2020s.
4. Django runs on 21.76% of gunicorn domains, AWS on 13.93%.
5. All 2,135 versioned domains run 20.0.4 or older, before the CVE-2024-1135 fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses gunicorn?
Python developers, mostly at small companies, plus two platforms that serve their customers' sites from it. Our October 2026 crawl finds gunicorn on 7,728 domains; 86.75% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff. Artlogic's gallery websites account for roughly 1,280 of the domains. Named examples include Tate, IDEXX, Pillsbury's Japanese-language site and the UK National Archives' Find Case Law.
How many customers does gunicorn have?
gunicorn has no customers in the usual sense: it's free, open-source software. Our October 2026 crawl counts 7,728 domains whose Server header names it, and 4,393 of them match a company. That's a floor, because gunicorn usually runs behind Nginx, which hides it. Since March 2026, 667 domains have dropped it on a hostname, about one in 11 of them still running it elsewhere.
What is gunicorn's market share?
0.05% of the Web Servers category, 15th of the 70 servers we track, on 7,728 domains. Apache HTTP Server (37.16%) and Nginx (35.33%) lead, but that comparison isn't like for like: the share counts the front-most Server header, and gunicorn normally sits behind one of those two. The real number of gunicorn deployments is far larger than the share suggests.
What are the best alternatives to gunicorn?
Among Python application servers, the usual alternatives are uWSGI, Uvicorn and Waitress. In front of it, the choice is a proxy: Nginx (5,101,407 domains in our Web Servers data), Apache HTTP Server (5,365,858) or Caddy (68,037). Those aren't replacements, they're layers. 453 domains show gunicorn and Nginx today, 482 gunicorn and Apache, and 378 gunicorn and Caddy.
Which countries use gunicorn the most?
The United States, with 1,256 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (514), Germany (267), France (238), Brazil (151) and India (145). The UK's share is high: one British company for every 2.44 American ones, against 2.72 for Apache and 3.74 for Kestrel on their profiles. Switzerland has 107 and Belgium 86. These counts cover 4,393 matched domains.
What size companies use gunicorn?
Mostly small ones. 65.92% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.83% have 11 to 50, so 86.75% have 50 staff or fewer. 99 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and at those gunicorn usually runs a single application, such as Mintel's client portal or G Adventures' developer API.
How old are companies that use gunicorn?
Young, for a web server. The largest group was founded in the 2010s (38.21%), and 23.06% in the 2020s, well above Apache's 15.7% and Kestrel's 15.55%. 22.34% were founded before 2000. Small galleries, restaurants and software start-ups are a large part of the list, along with the platforms that build their sites.
What is the ideal customer profile for gunicorn?
The ideal gunicorn customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (65.92%), Location: US, then UK, Germany, France, Founded: 2010s, with 23.06% in the 2020s, Industry: Art galleries and artists, software, Site stack: Django app, often on AWS — based on our analysis of 4,393 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
What is the difference between Nginx and Gunicorn?
gunicorn runs your Python application; Nginx sits in front of it, handling connections, buffering and static files. gunicorn's deploy guide strongly recommends a proxy and warns that its default synchronous workers are vulnerable to denial of service if slow clients aren't buffered. In our crawl, 453 domains show both servers today, and 7,728 expose gunicorn's own header.
Why is Gunicorn used?
To serve Python web applications in production. gunicorn.org describes it as a Python WSGI HTTP server with a pre-fork worker model that works with WSGI and ASGI frameworks such as Django, Flask and FastAPI. In our crawl, Django runs on 21.76% of gunicorn domains, and two platforms, Artlogic's gallery sites and SpotOn's restaurant sites, use it for well over a thousand customer websites between them.
What is Gunicorn in Python?
gunicorn, short for "Green Unicorn", is a Python WSGI HTTP server for UNIX. Its README says the pre-fork worker model was ported from Ruby's Unicorn project. You install it with pip and point it at your application, and it also runs ASGI frameworks. On the public web it usually hides behind Nginx, but 7,728 domains in our October 2026 crawl answer with its own Server header.
Is Gunicorn still recommended?
Yes. The project is active: its changelog lists 26.2.2 on 6 September 2026, and its deploy guide still recommends running it behind a proxy such as Nginx. What isn't recommended is running old releases. Of the 2,135 domains in our crawl that announce a version, every one runs 20.0.4 or older, all released before 2021.
Is gunicorn free?
Yes. gunicorn is open source under the MIT licence, published in the project's GitHub repository, so it costs nothing to use, modify or redistribute. The cost is the hosting behind it. In our crawl, Amazon Web Services shows on 13.93% of gunicorn domains, Azure on 5.68% and OVHcloud on 2.81%, the largest providers we can identify.
Which gunicorn versions do websites run?
Only old ones announce it. gunicorn stopped putting its version in the Server header in 20.1.0 (February 2021), so every version we read is 20.0.4 or earlier. Of 7,488 domains seen in a 45-day window to mid-October 2026, 2,135 carried one: 19.10.0 on 1,408 (mostly Artlogic sites), 19.9.0 on 409 (mostly SpotOn) and 20.0.4 on 144.
Is an old gunicorn version a security risk?
It can be. gunicorn's changelog lists a fix for CVE-2024-1135, an HTTP request smuggling flaw rated 7.5 (high) by NVD, in 22.0.0 from April 2024. Every one of the 2,135 domains announcing a version runs a release older than that. A Linux distribution can patch a packaged release without changing its number, so treat the version as a lead, not proof.
