Our live crawl identifies 7,537 domains running Jekyll, resolving to 3,106 identifiable organisations. Named users include Ticketmaster, GitHub, the Apache Software Foundation, Bugcrowd, Cisco Talos, the OpenSearch project, Expensify, Discourse, Starburst and New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Jekyll ranks 5th among static site generators we measure.

That ranking understates it, and we can say by what mechanism. Jekyll's reliable signal is the <meta name="generator"> tag it writes into every page, and any theme can delete that line without changing a thing about the site. Next.js and Astro leave runtime fingerprints a build cannot suppress; Jekyll leaves a comment. The 7,537 is a floor, not a census, and it is the only number in this category with that property.

The second thing the data says is where Jekyll actually lives. 58.28% of the domains we detect it on also run GitHub Pages, which builds Jekyll natively and needs no configuration to do it. The remaining 3,321 domains self-host, mostly behind Cloudflare (37.01%) and Netlify (21.38%). Read the two halves separately: one is a default, the other is a choice.

Jekyll Usage Statistics

Jekyll reads 6,231 domains on our first full monthly rollup in June 2026 and 7,537 by August 2026. That is our crawl reaching more of the web, not Jekyll gaining users. A twelve-year-old Ruby static site generator does not add a fifth of its install base in two months. Quote the August figure and ignore the slope.

The named list below is ordered by company size and covers 50 of the 3,106 matched organisations. Read the detection host rather than the domain. Jekyll shows up on developer.ticketmaster.com, archiveprogram.github.com and careers.humber.ca, which is how it is normally deployed: a documentation or careers site attached to a main property built on something else.

Which Countries Use Jekyll the Most?

The United States accounts for 802 matched companies, 33.56% of the geographic base, with the United Kingdom at 11.34% and Germany at 7.99%. India (5.82%) and France (4.90%) follow. The distribution is flatter than most of this category, which fits a tool distributed through GitHub rather than through a hosting company's regional marketing.

Share of the 3,106 Jekyll domains we matched to a company record — 41.2% of the 7,537 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.

Jekyll Market Share Among Static Site Generators

Jekyll holds 0.69% of Static Site Generators and ranks 5th, behind Next.js (731,970 domains), Astro (287,180), Gatsby (29,767) and Hugo (28,690). The gap to the leaders is real but the measurement is not symmetrical: Next.js and Astro ship runtime artefacts that a production build cannot remove, while Jekyll is identified almost entirely by a generator meta tag that themes routinely strip. Treat 7,537 as the number of Jekyll sites that did not turn the tag off.

Jekyll Customers by Company Size & Age

76.52% of matched Jekyll companies employ 1 to 10 people and 16.07% employ 11 to 50. Only 88 organisations in the entire matched set have more than 200 employees. This is the size distribution of a tool with no licence, no dashboard and no sales motion: it spreads because one engineer chose it, and it stays because nothing forces a review.

What Industries Use Jekyll the Most?

Software Development leads at 26.22%, followed by IT Services and IT Consulting (18.65%), Technology, Information and Internet (9.60%), Information Technology & Services (4.06%) and Computer and Network Security (3.66%).

Those five rows are 62.19% of the matched base, and no other category we measure concentrates that hard on people who write software for a living. The named list explains why. The detections resolve to developer.ticketmaster.com, archiveprogram.github.com, talosintelligence.com and opensearch.org: documentation portals, project sites and engineering blogs. Research Services (2.72%) and Higher Education (1.48%) are the same behaviour in a different building.

Jekyll Alternatives & Competitors

Next.js and Astro are the two generators Jekyll actually loses to, and only one of those corridors survives our coexistence test. 196 domains have run both Jekyll and Next.js at some point and 168 of them still run both, an 85.71% overlap that describes a documentation site sitting beside an application, not a migration. Hugo behaves the same way at 73.33%. Astro is different: 88 domains ever ran both, 37 still do, and of the ones that resolved, 49 kept Astro and none kept Jekyll. That is the only directional movement in this category we can defend.

Tech Stack of Jekyll-Powered Websites

GitHub Pages at 58.28% is the row that defines this technology, and Fastly (57.17%) is the same fact seen from the network side, because GitHub Pages serves through Fastly. The percentages listed below are shares of all 7,537 Jekyll domains. Measured instead against only the 3,321 that do not run GitHub Pages, Cloudflare rises from 33.96% to 37.01% and Netlify from 9.30% to 21.38%, which is where self-hosted Jekyll actually lives. Google Analytics reaches only 48.09% and Google Tag Manager 45.59%, both unusually low, which is what a documentation site looks like when nobody is running a marketing stack on it.

Expert Analysis: Jekyll Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

The only ranking in this category built on a signal the publisher controls

Every technology profile carries a measurement caveat somewhere. This one has to lead with it, because the caveat is the finding.

We identify Jekyll from the generator meta tag it writes into each rendered page. That tag is a single line in a layout template. Removing it is a theme edit that takes seconds, breaks nothing and is recommended by a fair number of Jekyll themes for cleanliness. There is no cookie, no runtime object, no script request to a vendor host and no header. A Jekyll site that strips the tag is, to us and to every other detector working the same way, not a Jekyll site.

Now compare what sits above it in the category. Next.js ships a hydration payload and a build manifest. Astro leaves island markers in the DOM. Gatsby writes its own runtime. Those are load-bearing artefacts: remove them and the site stops working. Jekyll's signal is decorative, and it is the one we count. So the 0.69% category share is not a measurement of Jekyll against Next.js. It is a measurement of Jekyll sites that left the tag on, against the full population of every generator that cannot hide.

This is the same shape as a finding we published on Livewire, in the opposite direction. There, a client-side package that cannot run without Laravel gave us a better census of Laravel than Laravel's own suppressible signature did. Here there is no such proxy. Jekyll has no runtime, no client library and no vendor host to call, which is precisely the property that makes it good software and bad telemetry.

What the visible half tells us anyway

Undercounting does not have to be uniform to be useful, and this one probably is not uniform in an interesting way. The theme most likely to strip the generator tag is a custom one, built by someone who cared enough to edit the layout. The theme least likely to strip it is a default. So the 7,537 domains we can see should skew towards defaults, and the 58.28% GitHub Pages share is consistent with that: GitHub Pages is the most default path into Jekyll that exists.

Which makes the other 3,321 the more interesting number. Those domains build Jekyll themselves and serve it from Cloudflare, Netlify or their own infrastructure. They chose the generator, they chose the pipeline, and they still left the tag alone. That is the population where Jekyll is a decision rather than a default, and it is 44.06% of all the Jekyll we can see.

Documentation, not marketing

Two numbers separate Jekyll from every other generator we measure. Software development and IT services together reach 44.87% of the matched base. And Google Analytics appears on only 48.09% of Jekyll domains, against 45.59% for Google Tag Manager, both far below what a commercial site carries.

A site with no analytics is not a site anyone is optimising. Read that beside the detection hosts, which resolve to developer.ticketmaster.com, archiveprogram.github.com, talosintelligence.com, opensearch.org and apache.org, and the picture is unambiguous: Jekyll is documentation infrastructure. It sits on a subdomain, it is maintained by engineers, it is measured by nobody, and it outlives several rewrites of the marketing site it hangs off.

That also explains the one migration corridor we are willing to publish. 49 domains dropped Jekyll while keeping Astro, and none went the other way, while the Next.js and Hugo pairs stayed at 85.71% and 73.33% still-both and were suppressed as coexistence. Astro is the generator that made the same trade Jekyll made, content-first with no client runtime by default, and then shipped the thing Jekyll never did: a modern component model. For a documentation site that has outgrown Liquid templates but has no reason to adopt React, it is the shortest move available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Jekyll?

Our live crawl finds Jekyll on 7,537 domains, resolving to 3,106 identifiable organisations. Named users include Ticketmaster, GitHub, the Apache Software Foundation, Bugcrowd, Cisco Talos, OpenSearch, Expensify and Discourse. Software development and IT services account for 44.87% of the matched base, and most detections sit on a documentation, careers or project subdomain rather than a company's main site.

How many customers does Jekyll have?

We detect Jekyll on 7,537 active domains as of our August 2026 rollup, of which 3,106 resolve to a company record. Treat that as a floor rather than a total: Jekyll is identified mainly by the generator meta tag it writes into each page, and themes can remove that line without affecting the site, so any Jekyll build that strips it is invisible to us.

What is Jekyll's market share?

Jekyll holds 0.69% of Static Site Generators and ranks 5th, behind Next.js at 731,970 domains, Astro at 287,180, Gatsby at 29,767 and Hugo at 28,690. The comparison is not like-for-like, because the four generators ahead of it leave runtime signals that a build cannot suppress and Jekyll leaves a removable comment.

What are the best alternatives to Jekyll?

Astro is the alternative our data actually supports. 49 domains dropped Jekyll and kept Astro in the window we observed, and none moved the other way. Hugo is the closest like-for-like swap, since both are single-binary or single-gem generators with no JavaScript runtime, and Next.js is the option people choose when the site stops being only documentation.

Which countries use Jekyll the most?

The United States leads with 802 matched companies (33.56%), followed by the United Kingdom at 271 (11.34%), Germany at 191 (7.99%), India at 139 (5.82%) and France at 117 (4.90%).

What size companies use Jekyll?

76.52% of matched Jekyll companies employ 1 to 10 people and 16.07% employ 11 to 50. Only 88 of the 3,106 matched organisations employ more than 200. Large organisations do appear, but usually on one subdomain rather than across the estate.

How old are companies that use Jekyll?

51.85% of matched companies were founded in the 2010s and 26.97% in the 2020s, with 14.61% dating from the 2000s. Jekyll's own release in 2008 sits just before the decade that dominates its base.

What is the ideal customer profile for Jekyll?

A software or IT services company of 1 to 10 people, founded in the 2010s, based in the US, UK or Germany, publishing documentation or a project site rather than a marketing site.

Does Jekyll run on GitHub Pages?

58.28% of the domains where we detect Jekyll also run GitHub Pages, which builds Jekyll natively without any configuration. The relationship shows up twice in our data, because GitHub Pages serves through Fastly and Fastly appears on 57.17% of the same base. The other 3,321 domains build Jekyll themselves and serve it elsewhere, mostly behind Cloudflare (37.01%) or Netlify (21.38%).

Why might Jekyll's real usage be higher than 7,537 domains?

Because the signal is optional. Jekyll writes a generator meta tag into each page and that is what we match on; deleting the line is a one-word theme edit that changes nothing else. Every Jekyll site whose theme removed it is a site we cannot see. The generators ranked above Jekyll do not have this property, so the category ranking compares a suppressible signal against unsuppressible ones.

Are companies moving from Jekyll to Astro?

In the window we observed, yes, and only in that direction. 49 domains dropped Jekyll while keeping Astro and none dropped Astro while keeping Jekyll. The corridor is small in absolute terms and we do not publish the Next.js or Hugo equivalents, because 85.71% and 73.33% of those pairs still run both technologies, which describes coexistence rather than movement.

What kind of sites is Jekyll used for?

Documentation and project sites, overwhelmingly. Software development, IT services and technology account for 54.47% of the matched base, and the detections resolve to hosts like developer.ticketmaster.com, archiveprogram.github.com, talosintelligence.com and opensearch.org. Google Analytics appears on only 48.09% of Jekyll domains, well below what a marketing site would show, which is consistent with the same reading.
