Companies Using IP2Location

IP2Location is a data company, and most of what it sells is invisible to us. Its databases sit on customers' servers and its IP2Location.io API answers server-to-server calls, so neither leaves a mark on a public page. One product does: the free IP2Location Redirection plugin for WordPress, which sets a cookie called ip2location_redirection_first_visit whenever it's switched on. Our October 2026 crawl finds that cookie on 2,046 live domains, 1,433 matched to a company, 15th of 66 in Maps & Geolocation. I checked 70 of them at random on 13 October: 61 set the cookie, 6 blocked us or didn't answer, and 3 loaded without it.

One plugin, not the whole company

The plugin looks up the visitor's country from their IP address and redirects them by rules the site owner writes. Its source code sets the cookie only after checking that redirection is enabled, so a count of the cookie is a count of sites with the plugin on, not merely installed. WordPress.org lists 7,000+ active installations and a first release in October 2014. We see fewer for two reasons we can name. The readme says it won't work behind a cache plugin, and on five sites in my sample the first request returned a cached page with no cookie; a fresh query string brought it back. And WordPress.org counts every install, including sites we never crawl.

Sales signal: setting the plugin up asks for an IP2Location LITE download token or an IP2Location.io API key, so each of these sites has an IP2Location account, free or paid. That makes this a list of known IP2Location users, not just plugin installs.

Growth trajectory

The chart reads 1,561 in June 2026, 1,841 in July, 1,943 in August, 2,044 in September and 2,046 in October. The June to July step of 280 reflects our side as much as installs: the domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens over time. After that the line rose by about a hundred a month, then stopped. 493 domains dropped the plugin on at least one hostname since we started tracking it on 17 March 2026, and on 13 October 58 of the 495 then on that list still ran it on another hostname.

Sales signal: this is a small, flat list of about 2,000 domains. Its value is how specific it is, not its size.

Who the customers are

35.48% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, against 55.72% on ipify's profile, and 32.76% have more than 50 staff, against 19.47%. 46 have more than 1,000. The founding years skew a little older too: 25.87% predate 2000. Some of the bigger names use the plugin on one property: CDK Global, Chubb Fire & Security and M2C run it on their recruitment pages. Others route the whole site: when I requested agromillora.com from a Turkish IP address, it answered with a 301 to its Turkish page and set the plugin's cookie in the same response. GrupoExpro, a Chilean HR services group, opens on a country picker.

Sales signal: a site runs this plugin because it has pages for different countries and wants visitors to land on the right one. Translation, localisation and multi-country hosting vendors will find warmer leads here than in a generic WordPress list.

Industry and geography

IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 7.06%, then Software Development (5.17%), Advertising Services (3.06%) and Business Consulting and Services (2.98%). Tech firms add up to 16.67% across four LinkedIn labels. The United States has only 200 matched companies, about 24% of the 849 in the top 15 countries, where ipify's top 15 is 55% American. The United Kingdom has 88, Spain 77, India 75 and Australia 55. Eight European countries hold 387 companies between them, and Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina 158.

Sales signal: this is a European and Spanish-speaking list more than an American one. Lead with Spanish-language and EU-market messaging. Agencies are a large group too: IT services and advertising firms make up 10.12% of matched companies.

Overlap with other lookup services

Our switching table is empty for IP2Location, and the overlap numbers say why. Only 33 domains have ever been seen with both IP2Location's plugin and IPinfo, and 18 still run both. A site that redirects on the server has less reason to call a browser-side API as well. The bigger lookup services in this category, ipify at 66,052 domains and IPinfo at 43,583, mostly arrive inside apps and site code, which is a different buyer from a WordPress owner who chose a redirect plugin.

Sales signal: a rival data vendor won't find a migration wave to ride. The opening is the account: a site on the free LITE database that outgrows it.

The stack around it

Across the 2,024 domains in our clean live set, WordPress runs on 96.99% and Elementor on 43.68%, with Divi on 6.32% and WPBakery on 5.73%. WooCommerce is on 28.46%. Google Analytics runs on 70.41%, Site Kit on 7.07% and MonsterInsights on 6.18%. jQuery UI (52.17%), Swiper (38.93%) and GSAP (23.62%) show the page builders at work. Hosting is fragmented, led by GoDaddy (9.54%) and Hostinger (9.19%), with SiteGround at 3.41% and WP Engine at 2.37%.

Sales signal: more than four in ten are Elementor builds, and hosting is spread across shared hosts. WordPress care plans, caching and performance vendors have an opening, but the readme's warning applies: a cache that ignores the plugin breaks the redirects.

What it costs

The plugin is free. IP2Location's LITE databases are free for personal or commercial use with attribution, and the company's own page says the LITE edition has limited accuracy. IP2Location.io's pricing starts with a free plan of 50,000 queries a month, attribution required, then Starter at $49 a month for 150,000, Plus at $249 for 300,000 and Security at $499 for 600,000 (checked 13 October 2026). The company behind it is Hexasoft Development Sdn. Bhd. in Penang, Malaysia, per its contact page. On WordPress.org the plugin has 43 ratings, 33 of them five stars.

Sales signal: we can't tell from the outside which sites pay, because the plugin prints the same footer comment naming the LITE database either way. Ask before you assume a site is on the free tier.
