Companies Using Gutenberg
Our October 2026 crawl finds the separate Gutenberg plugin on 64,333 live domains. The plugin is the beta channel that gets editor features before a WordPress release does. The block editor itself has shipped in core since WordPress 5.0, and a site running only that doesn't count here. Below is the list of companies that use Gutenberg this way, with size, country, industry and stack. It includes Blackstone's main site, Oxford University Press on languages.oup.com and the University of Georgia's news site.
Two hosts decide most of this count. WordPress.com serves 51.9% of the live Gutenberg domains we checked on 13 October (38,911 of 74,996), and IONOS's MyWebsite Now builder runs on another 18.96%, so for most of these sites the platform, not the owner, most likely put the plugin there. Gutenberg ranks #6 in Developer Tooling with a 3.51% share.

Gutenberg Usage Statistics
Our current crawl counts 57,678 Gutenberg plugin domains in June 2026, 73,347 in July, 75,040 in August, 79,168 in September and 64,333 in October. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The 15,669-domain step into July and the 14,835-domain fall into October reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Gutenberg with, rather than a wave of sites adding or removing the plugin. Our live state on 13 October still held 74,996 domains.
Exits are smaller than the raw figure suggests. 28,176 domains have dropped the plugin on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026, but when we rechecked, 9,526 of 28,171 such domains (33.8%) still ran it on another hostname.
List of Companies Using Gutenberg
Our list of companies using Gutenberg covers 45,134 organisations matched to domains where we detect the plugin. Every size, industry and country figure on this page describes that matched set.
Among the named brands that use Gutenberg, 34 of 50 were detected on a subdomain: newsrooms such as news.uga.edu and news.apache.org, blogs such as blog.buckle.com and blog.meo.pt, and help or careers sites. 27 of the 50 are served by WordPress.com. When you review websites using Gutenberg at a large organisation, read the hit as one team's WordPress site; the main web estate may run something else entirely.

Recognisable companies using Gutenberg and brands using Gutenberg in 2026, each with the site where we found the plugin:
- Blackstone: the Gutenberg plugin on its main site, www.blackstone.com
- Oxford University Press: Gutenberg on languages.oup.com
- University of Georgia: Gutenberg on its news site, news.uga.edu
- Apache Software Foundation: Gutenberg on news.apache.org, served by WordPress.com
- Poshmark: Gutenberg on blog.poshmark.com
- The Buckle: Gutenberg on its Threads blog, blog.buckle.com
- ChristianaCare: Gutenberg on its newsroom, news.christianacare.org
- Solera: Gutenberg on its main site, www.solera.com
- Stone: Gutenberg on docs.stone.com.br, its financial statements site
- MEO: Gutenberg on blog.meo.pt
The plugin's own project runs it too, on make.wordpress.org, where WordPress contributors coordinate. Gutenberg is free, so there's no vendor customer list to cross-check; these are detections only.
Which Countries Use Gutenberg the Most?
Which countries use Gutenberg the most? The United States leads with 13,575 of 45,134 matched companies (30.08%), and Germany is second with 6,113, close to half the US figure. Germany's 13.54% share is three times its 4.43% on Babel's page, and IONOS's MyWebsite Now, on 18.96% of Gutenberg domains, is the likely reason: 4 of the 10 MyWebsite Now sites in our random sample had .de domains. The United Kingdom (4,470), France (2,557) and Spain (1,806) follow, based on our enriched company data.
Share of the 45,134 Gutenberg domains we matched to a company record — 70.2% of the 64,333 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Gutenberg Market Share Among Developer Tooling
What is Gutenberg's market share? The plugin holds 3.51% of the Developer Tooling category and ranks #6, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Read the rank with care. The category lines up JavaScript build tools such as Webpack and Babel (20.68%) with a WordPress plugin, so the rank compares footprints across very different kinds of tool. Gutenberg's real alternatives are other ways to edit a WordPress site, which sit in our CMS categories.
Gutenberg Customers by Company Size & Age
Is Gutenberg only used by small businesses? Mostly. 75.43% of matched companies have 1-10 employees and 92.61% have 50 or fewer, out of 40,544 with a published size band. Above 1,000 employees there are 223 companies, and they rarely run the plugin on the main site. The University of Georgia runs it on news.uga.edu, ChristianaCare on its newsroom and Poshmark on its blog. Blackstone is the exception, with the plugin on www.blackstone.com.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
Of the 22,128 matched companies with a known founding year, 35.86% date from the 2010s and 33.14% from the 2020s, so 69.0% were founded in 2010 or later. A third founded this decade is a young base, and it fits sites set up on hosted plans. Older institutions still appear: Oxford University Press runs the plugin on languages.oup.com and the University of Puerto Rico on its governing board's site.
What Industries Use Gutenberg the Most?
Business Consulting and Services leads at 5.24%, followed by Construction (3.96%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (2.92%). The ten industries charted add up to 27.9% of matched companies, so no vertical owns this plugin. It's the industry mix of small-business websites in general, based on our enriched company data.
Non-profit organisations using Gutenberg make up 2.78% and retail companies using Gutenberg 2.53%, with Advertising Services and Real Estate at 2.17% each. Universities using Gutenberg are a small slice by count but the largest group in our named list, 12 of 50: the University of Georgia, the University of Victoria and Colorado College all run it on news or student-media sites. That points sellers to campus communications teams.
Gutenberg Customer Migration
Tech Stack of Gutenberg-Powered Websites
WordPress is on 100% of the 74,753 live domains in our stack analysis, by definition, since the plugin only runs inside WordPress. That base is our current crawl state, larger than the 64,333 October headline. Elementor runs on 26.45%, MyWebsite Now on 18.96% and GoDaddy CoBlocks on 8.18%, so a quarter of these sites build pages in Elementor with the Gutenberg plugin underneath. WordPress.com Stats appears on 44.78%, close to the WordPress.com hosting share. jQuery (65.97%), Swiper (44.74%) and core-js (26.67%) lead the scripts.

Expert Analysis: Gutenberg Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

When a technology page says Gutenberg, most readers think of the WordPress block editor. I counted something narrower: our rule looks for files loaded from /wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/, the folder of the separate Gutenberg plugin, and as of our October 2026 crawl TechnologyChecker.io finds it on 64,333 live domains, with 45,134 organisations matched to a company record. The useful question for a sales team is who put the plugin there, and for most of these sites the answer is a hosting company.
What the signal catches
The block editor has been part of WordPress core since 5.0, and WordPress's own version table shows each release bundling a fixed Gutenberg version: WordPress 7.1 carries Gutenberg 23.6. The plugin runs ahead of that. WordPress.org calls it a beta that gives early access to new features, lists version 24.1.0 and shows 400,000+ active installations. A core-only site loads its block styles from wp-includes and never matches our rule. Our technology detection methods post explains how path-based rules like this one work.
Who installed it
On 13 October I checked the live Gutenberg set against hosting signals. WordPress.com serves 38,911 of 74,996 domains (51.9%), and in a random sample of 70 domains, 38 of the 39 WordPress.com pages loaded the plugin from their own plugin folder, local businesses as much as publishers. A beta editor plugin on a landscaper's site is more likely a platform default than an owner's choice. IONOS's MyWebsite Now builder accounts for 14,427 more, and only four domains carry both. Version strings make the pattern plain. 9,761 of the 9,905 domains reporting Gutenberg 20.7.0 are MyWebsite Now sites, and 1,019 of the 1,093 on 22.8.2 sit on other IONOS hosting, so each platform pins one release. The newest versions, 24.0.0 on 2,969 domains and 24.1.0 on 1,880, are about half on hosts outside WordPress.com, IONOS and GoDaddy. Those independent installs are 17,692 domains, 23.6% of the live set.
Sales Signal: Split the list before you use it. A WordPress.com or MyWebsite Now hit tells you who hosts the site and little else. The 17,692 independent installs are where someone chose a beta editor plugin, which usually means an agency or an in-house developer.
Growth trajectory
Our current crawl counts 57,678 domains in June 2026, 73,347 in July, 75,040 in August, 79,168 in September and 64,333 in October. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The July step and the October fall reflect changes on our side, both the domains we cover and the signals we detect Gutenberg with, rather than sites adding or removing the plugin in bulk. The live state still held 74,996 domains when I checked.
Exits need a second look. 28,176 domains have dropped the plugin on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026. When we rechecked, 9,526 of 28,171 still ran it on another hostname, so a third of those exits are hostname changes on sites that still run the plugin.
"Half of the Gutenberg plugin's footprint sits on one host, WordPress.com. Before you read a hit as the site owner's choice, check who hosts the site." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: Don't read the line as momentum. The footprint moves when WordPress.com or IONOS changes what it ships, so watch the platform shares; the monthly total follows them.
The companies behind the domains
The matched base is small and young. 75.43% of companies with a size band have 1-10 employees and 92.61% have 50 or fewer. Of those with a founding year, 33.14% were founded in the 2020s and 69.0% in 2010 or later. Only 223 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and in our named list 34 of 50 were detected on a subdomain. The pattern repeats: a newsroom (news.uga.edu, news.christianacare.org, news.apache.org), a brand blog (Poshmark, The Buckle, MEO) or a help centre such as Paris's marketplace help site. Blackstone and Solera are the clearest main-site deployments. Gutenberg has no vendor customer list, so I had nothing published to cross-check against.
Sales Signal: At a large account, the buyer behind a Gutenberg hit is the communications or content team that owns that one site. Pitch editorial workflow, hosting or design services to them. A CMS replacement pitch will reach the wrong team.
Industry and geographic concentration
No industry passes 5.24% (Business Consulting and Services), and the ten largest add up to 27.9%. Universities are the visible exception in the named list, 12 of 50, mostly on news and student-media sites. Geography carries the platform story. The United States has 13,575 matched companies, but Germany is second with 6,113, close to half the US figure, ahead of the United Kingdom (4,470), France (2,557) and Spain (1,806). English-speaking countries account for 46.87% of matched companies, against 55.96% on Babel's page, which fits the weight of MyWebsite Now.
Sales Signal: For German-speaking markets, filter Gutenberg plus MyWebsite Now to reach small businesses on IONOS's builder. For higher education, filter by industry and subdomain to find campus news teams.
Why there is no migration table
We tested switching corridors and published none, because a Gutenberg plugin site doesn't leave one tool for another. It adds the plugin on top of what it has. Elementor runs today on 19,783 of the 22,896 domains where we've seen both, and GoDaddy CoBlocks on 6,117 of 7,171. Those are layers of one site.
"Nobody migrates away from the Gutenberg plugin to a rival. They stop needing it when core catches up, or their host stops shipping it." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: If you sell a page builder, a Gutenberg hit beside Elementor is not a switching signal. A site with the plugin and no builder is the cleaner target.
Technology ecosystem
WordPress is on 100% of the 74,753 domains in our stack analysis, by definition. Elementor follows at 26.45%, MyWebsite Now at 18.96%, GoDaddy CoBlocks at 8.18% and Divi at 2.6%. jQuery runs on 65.97%, Swiper on 44.74% and core-js on 26.67%. WordPress.com Stats is on 44.78% and Site Kit on 10.24%, while IONOS (18.89%) and GoDaddy (8.75%) lead the hosting column.
Sales Signal: This is a small-business WordPress list with a host-managed plugin on top. Sell WordPress services, maintenance and SEO tooling into it; JavaScript framework tooling will miss.
Key takeaways
- 64,333 live domains run the Gutenberg plugin, separate from the block editor in WordPress core.
- WordPress.com serves 51.9% of the live set and MyWebsite Now builds 18.96%.
- Each platform pins one version; 20.7.0 is almost entirely MyWebsite Now.
- Independent installs are about 17,692 domains, 23.6% of the live set.
- Large organisations run it on a single newsroom, blog or help site.
Sales applications
For targeting, filter Gutenberg on TechnologyChecker.io and exclude WordPress.com and MyWebsite Now sites; what remains are teams that chose the plugin. For outreach to them, be specific: "Your site runs the Gutenberg beta plugin on top of WordPress. We help teams keep editor upgrades from breaking their layouts." For hosting and agency sellers, the WordPress.com and IONOS segments are the opposite case: owners who haven't touched their stack, and may not know what their host runs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Gutenberg?
Mostly small sites on hosted WordPress. 75.43% of matched companies have 1-10 employees, and WordPress.com serves 51.9% of the live domains we checked. Larger names run the plugin on one property: Blackstone on its main site, Oxford University Press on languages.oup.com and the University of Georgia on its news site. Business Consulting and Services is the largest industry, at 5.24%.
How many customers does Gutenberg have?
Gutenberg is a free plugin, so the honest unit is sites. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 64,333 live domains, and 45,134 organisations match a company record. WordPress.org lists 400,000+ active installations, which counts installs rather than domains. 28,176 domains have dropped it on a hostname since March 2026, though a third of those still run it elsewhere.
What is Gutenberg's market share?
Gutenberg holds 3.51% of the Developer Tooling category on TechnologyChecker.io and ranks #6. That category is mostly JavaScript build tools; Babel, for comparison, has 20.68%. So the share measures how many domains carry the plugin's files, a different question from which build tool a site prefers. Among WordPress sites, Elementor is the closer comparison, and it runs on 26.45% of Gutenberg domains.
Which countries use Gutenberg the most?
The United States leads with 13,575 matched companies, 30.08% of the 45,134 we matched. Germany is second with 6,113, a high share that fits the 18.96% of Gutenberg domains built with IONOS's MyWebsite Now. The United Kingdom (4,470), France (2,557), Spain (1,806), Canada (1,599) and Australia (1,510) follow, based on our enriched company data.
What size companies use Gutenberg?
Small ones. 75.43% of matched companies with a size band have 1-10 employees and 17.18% have 11-50, so 92.61% have 50 or fewer. Only 223 companies have more than 1,000 staff. Those larger organisations usually run the plugin on a single newsroom, blog or help site, often hosted on WordPress.com, rather than across their main web estate.
How old are companies that use Gutenberg?
Young. Of the 22,128 matched companies with a founding year, 35.86% were founded in the 2010s and 33.14% in the 2020s, so 69.0% date from 2010 or later. Only 2.87% predate 1960. The 2020s share is far above Babel's 12.83%, which fits a base built largely on hosted plans from WordPress.com and IONOS.
What is the ideal customer profile for Gutenberg?
A typical Gutenberg plugin site belongs to a 1-10 person business (75.43%) founded in 2010 or later (69.0%), in the United States, Germany or the United Kingdom, and is served by WordPress.com or built with IONOS's MyWebsite Now. Consulting, construction and IT services lead the industries. For enterprise prospecting, look for a single newsroom or blog on a subdomain.
What are the best alternatives to Gutenberg?
Inside WordPress there are three routes. Stay on the block editor that ships in core, which most sites do without the plugin. Use a page builder: Elementor runs on 26.45% of Gutenberg plugin domains and Divi on 2.6%. Or install the Classic Editor plugin for teams that don't want blocks. Outside WordPress, the comparison is a hosted website builder.
What is Gutenberg in WordPress?
Gutenberg is the code name for WordPress's block editor project. Its stable features ship inside each WordPress release, and the separate Gutenberg plugin on WordPress.org delivers newer features first, as a beta. WordPress 7.1 includes Gutenberg 23.6, while the plugin is at 24.1.0. Our count of 64,333 domains covers sites running the plugin, not every site using blocks.
Is Gutenberg for WordPress free?
Yes. The plugin is free on WordPress.org, and code contributed to the project since April 2021 is dual-licensed under the GPL (version 2 or later) and the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The block editor inside WordPress costs nothing either. What sites pay for is hosting, and WordPress.com serves 51.9% of the live Gutenberg plugin domains we checked.
Which is better, Gutenberg or Elementor?
It depends on who edits the site. Gutenberg's blocks ship with WordPress and need no extra plugin, while Elementor adds a visual drag-and-drop builder with its own templates. Plenty of sites run both: Elementor appears on 26.45% of Gutenberg plugin domains, and 19,783 domains run both today out of 22,896 where our crawl has seen the pair.
Do you still need the Gutenberg plugin?
Most sites don't. WordPress.org says each WordPress release includes the plugin's stable features, so the plugin is for trying newer ones early. Yet 64,333 domains carry it, and hosts look like the main reason: WordPress.com serves 51.9% of the live sites we checked, and 9,761 MyWebsite Now domains report the same Gutenberg version, 20.7.0, well behind the current 24.1.0.
Does WordPress.com use the Gutenberg plugin?
On the sites we checked, yes. 38,911 of 74,996 live Gutenberg plugin domains (51.9%) are served by WordPress.com, and in a random sample, 38 of 39 pages served by WordPress.com loaded files from their own /wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/ folder. Those pages rarely print a version number, so our data can't say which plugin release WordPress.com runs.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect Gutenberg?
We look for scripts or stylesheets loaded from /wp-content/plugins/gutenberg/, the folder the plugin installs into. The block editor built into WordPress loads its files from wp-includes instead, so it isn't counted. Where a stylesheet carries a version, we record it: 20.7.0 is the most common, on 9,905 domains, and 9,761 of those are IONOS MyWebsite Now sites.
