The churn ratio is the story

Most payment profiles are read for their headline count. On Braintree the interesting number is the one underneath it. Since we began covering the technology in March 2026 we have watched 1,811 domains drop Braintree, against 4,655 still running it in August. That is a churn-to-active ratio of about 39%.

Put it next to the others in this category and the gap is stark. authorize.net has shed 748 against 8,148 held, about 9%. Recharge 3,277 against 20,108, about 16%. Mercado Pago 512 against 8,244, about 6%. Braintree is losing domains at four times authorize.net's rate.

Four gateways, one observation window, one methodology. Braintree is the only one where the domains leaving are a large fraction of the domains staying.

Why the rising chart does not contradict that

The usage series on this page goes up: 3,457 in June, 4,325 in July, 4,655 in August. It would be easy and wrong to present that as growth.

Two things move a monthly count that have nothing to do with adoption. The set of domains we crawl turns over continuously, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, so the universe being measured is not fixed. And our detection signals widen over time, so a technology becomes visible on domains that were always running it. Across a three-month window early in a technology's coverage, both effects push the same direction. The churn figure is measured against a stable population of domains we have actually watched, which is why we lead with it here.

The stack explains the churn

jQuery appears on 94.11% of Braintree domains, the highest co-occurrence on this profile that is not a platform dependency. Underscore.js is on 72.66%, Lodash on 72.59%, Bootstrap on 70.55%, Magento on 39.67%, RequireJS on 40.90%, AngularJS on 23.44%.

Read that list as a date stamp. Underscore, RequireJS and AngularJS together describe a frontend built somewhere between 2013 and 2017, and Magento at 39.67% points to storefronts on a platform whose own version-1 line reached end of life in 2020. These are not sites that have been recently rebuilt.

That matters because a gateway rarely gets changed on its own. It gets changed when the store around it is replaced, and a base this concentrated in one technical generation is a base facing a replatforming decision. Every one of those decisions is an opportunity for the incumbent gateway to lose.

No stronghold to defend

Braintree's industry distribution is the flattest in this category. Retail leads at 11.87%, then Wholesale at 4.31%, Manufacturing at 3.20%, Software Development at 2.60%. Nothing dominates.

Compare that to authorize.net, where Veterinary Services alone is 11.05% and the professional-services cluster underneath it shares one trait: the gateway is wired into practice-management software. That integration is what makes authorize.net's base sticky despite an older product. Braintree has no equivalent. It was adopted broadly because PayPal sold it broadly, which is efficient distribution and poor retention: nothing about a general-purpose gateway is hard to leave.

authorize.net is defended by integrations nobody wants to rewrite. Braintree is defended by nothing in particular.

Where it is genuinely strong

Two things on this page work in Braintree's favour. The first is international reach: the United Kingdom is 16.00% of its geolocated companies, with Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong all present. authorize.net is 87.42% United States. If you need one gateway across several markets, Braintree's footprint is evidence it works there.

The second is company size. 14.23% of matched Braintree companies employ 51 to 200 people and 113 exceed 500, the fattest large-company bands of any gateway we publish. LabCorp, Panasonic, Acer, SharkNinja and PizzaExpress are real deployments on real commerce surfaces, and a product that survives procurement at that scale has capabilities the install count does not show.

Why we publish no migration corridor

The raw data offers one. 124 domains dropped Braintree while running Stripe in the observed window, against 45 in the other direction, and 27 moved to authorize.net. On most sites that would be published as a migration table.

We check one thing first: of the domains that have ever run both Braintree and Stripe, how many still run both? The answer is 64.9%. Our threshold for calling something a corridor is 40% or below, because above that the population is mostly coexisting and the switch pairs are a minority behaviour inside it. Braintree is closer to qualifying than anything else in this category, and if that share keeps falling the corridor will appear here. Today it does not.

What to take from this

If you already run Braintree on a Magento storefront, the relevant question is what happens at your next replatform, because that is when this decision actually gets made.
