Companies Using Braintree

Our live crawl identifies 4,655 domains running Braintree, resolving to 2,320 identifiable organisations. Named users include LabCorp, Panasonic, Acer, SharkNinja, Aeropostale, PizzaExpress, the American Cancer Society and the STARK Group.

Braintree ranks 21st in Payment Processing with 0.06% share. As on every profile in this category, the rows above it are largely card marks and wallet buttons that share a checkout rather than compete for it. Among gateways in the United States, its largest market, Braintree is fourth on 945 companies, behind Stripe on 56,626, Square on 4,760 and authorize.net on 4,649.

The number that distinguishes this profile is churn. Since we began covering Braintree in March 2026 we have watched 1,811 domains drop it, against 4,655 still running it in our August rollup. That ratio is the highest of any payment technology we publish: authorize.net's equivalent is 748 dropped against 8,148 held, roughly a fifth of the rate.

Read the rising monthly series below carefully. It moves from 3,457 in June to 4,655 in August, but that reflects our coverage widening across those months rather than net adoption, and it sits alongside the churn figure above rather than contradicting it.

Braintree Usage Statistics

Braintree reads 3,457 domains on our first full monthly rollup in June 2026, 4,325 in July and 4,655 in August. Do not read that as growth. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so a rising line across three months of expanding coverage is not evidence of adoption. The churn figure on this page is the better guide to direction.

There are 4,655 companies and websites using Braintree, sign up to download the entire Braintree dataset.

Named users include LabCorp, Panasonic, Acer, SharkNinja, Aeropostale, PizzaExpress, the American Cancer Society, Veterans United, the STARK Group and Uncommon Schools. The mix of consumer electronics, healthcare and non-profits reflects Braintree's origins as the gateway behind PayPal's merchant relationships rather than a self-selected vertical.

Which Countries Use Braintree the Most?

The United States accounts for 945 matched companies, 42.36% of the geographic base, with the United Kingdom unusually strong at 357 (16.00%). Australia follows on 107, the Netherlands on 91 and Germany on 78. Taiwan at 75 and Hong Kong at 38 give Braintree a wider international spread than the other US gateways on this site, which is consistent with its history as PayPal's cross-border merchant product.

Braintree Market Share Among Payment Processing

Braintree holds 0.06% of Payment Processing and ranks 21st of 50. The ranking mixes gateways with card marks that co-occur on one checkout. Among gateways in the United States, Braintree is fourth on 945 companies, behind Stripe (56,626), Square (4,760) and authorize.net (4,649). It is the only gateway in that group with a substantial non-US base: the United Kingdom alone contributes 16.00% of its geolocated companies.

What Industries Use Braintree the Most?

Retail leads at 11.87%, followed by Wholesale (4.31%), Manufacturing (3.20%) and Software Development (2.60%). Retail Apparel and Fashion adds 2.56% and Motor Vehicle Manufacturing 2.10%. The distribution is flatter than the other payment technologies on this site, with no single sector above 12%.

Wholesale86 (4.31%)
Manufacturing64 (3.2%)
Software Development52 (2.6%)
Retail Apparel and Fashion51 (2.55%)
Technology, Information and Internet49 (2.45%)

The flatness is the finding. Recharge concentrates in consumables and authorize.net in veterinary and professional services, but Braintree spreads across retail, wholesale, manufacturing, software and automotive without a dominant vertical. That is what a general-purpose gateway sold through a large parent company looks like: it was adopted wherever a PayPal relationship already existed, rather than won by fitting one industry's workflow. The absence of a stronghold is also why it has less holding the base in place than authorize.net's practice-management integrations do.

Braintree Alternatives & Competitors

We publish no switching corridors on this profile, though this is the closest any payment technology on our site comes to qualifying. Of the domains that have ever run both Braintree and Stripe, 64.9% still run both, and our threshold for publishing a corridor is 40% or below. The observed movement is real (124 domains dropped Braintree while running Stripe in the window we watched) but it sits inside a population that mostly keeps both, so we report the churn figure instead and leave the corridor unbuilt.

jQuery appears on 94.11% of Braintree domains, the highest single co-occurrence outside a platform dependency. Underscore.js reaches 72.66% and Lodash 72.59%, and Magento is on 39.67%. That combination dates the base: Magento 1 and 2 storefronts with jQuery-era frontends. It is the clearest technical explanation for why these domains are churning faster than the rest of the category.

Expert Analysis: Braintree Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

The churn ratio is the story

Most payment profiles are read for their headline count. On Braintree the interesting number is the one underneath it. Since we began covering the technology in March 2026 we have watched 1,811 domains drop Braintree, against 4,655 still running it in August. That is a churn-to-active ratio of about 39%.

Put it next to the others in this category and the gap is stark. authorize.net has shed 748 against 8,148 held, about 9%. Recharge 3,277 against 20,108, about 16%. Mercado Pago 512 against 8,244, about 6%. Braintree is losing domains at four times authorize.net's rate.

Four gateways, one observation window, one methodology. Braintree is the only one where the domains leaving are a large fraction of the domains staying.

Why the rising chart does not contradict that

The usage series on this page goes up: 3,457 in June, 4,325 in July, 4,655 in August. It would be easy and wrong to present that as growth.

Two things move a monthly count that have nothing to do with adoption. The set of domains we crawl turns over continuously, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, so the universe being measured is not fixed. And our detection signals widen over time, so a technology becomes visible on domains that were always running it. Across a three-month window early in a technology's coverage, both effects push the same direction. The churn figure is measured against a stable population of domains we have actually watched, which is why we lead with it here.

The stack explains the churn

jQuery appears on 94.11% of Braintree domains, the highest co-occurrence on this profile that is not a platform dependency. Underscore.js is on 72.66%, Lodash on 72.59%, Bootstrap on 70.55%, Magento on 39.67%, RequireJS on 40.90%, AngularJS on 23.44%.

Read that list as a date stamp. Underscore, RequireJS and AngularJS together describe a frontend built somewhere between 2013 and 2017, and Magento at 39.67% points to storefronts on a platform whose own version-1 line reached end of life in 2020. These are not sites that have been recently rebuilt.

That matters because a gateway rarely gets changed on its own. It gets changed when the store around it is replaced, and a base this concentrated in one technical generation is a base facing a replatforming decision. Every one of those decisions is an opportunity for the incumbent gateway to lose.

No stronghold to defend

Braintree's industry distribution is the flattest in this category. Retail leads at 11.87%, then Wholesale at 4.31%, Manufacturing at 3.20%, Software Development at 2.60%. Nothing dominates.

Compare that to authorize.net, where Veterinary Services alone is 11.05% and the professional-services cluster underneath it shares one trait: the gateway is wired into practice-management software. That integration is what makes authorize.net's base sticky despite an older product. Braintree has no equivalent. It was adopted broadly because PayPal sold it broadly, which is efficient distribution and poor retention: nothing about a general-purpose gateway is hard to leave.

authorize.net is defended by integrations nobody wants to rewrite. Braintree is defended by nothing in particular.

Where it is genuinely strong

Two things on this page work in Braintree's favour. The first is international reach: the United Kingdom is 16.00% of its geolocated companies, with Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong all present. authorize.net is 87.42% United States. If you need one gateway across several markets, Braintree's footprint is evidence it works there.

The second is company size. 14.23% of matched Braintree companies employ 51 to 200 people and 113 exceed 500, the fattest large-company bands of any gateway we publish. LabCorp, Panasonic, Acer, SharkNinja and PizzaExpress are real deployments on real commerce surfaces, and a product that survives procurement at that scale has capabilities the install count does not show.

Why we publish no migration corridor

The raw data offers one. 124 domains dropped Braintree while running Stripe in the observed window, against 45 in the other direction, and 27 moved to authorize.net. On most sites that would be published as a migration table.

We check one thing first: of the domains that have ever run both Braintree and Stripe, how many still run both? The answer is 64.9%. Our threshold for calling something a corridor is 40% or below, because above that the population is mostly coexisting and the switch pairs are a minority behaviour inside it. Braintree is closer to qualifying than anything else in this category, and if that share keeps falling the corridor will appear here. Today it does not.

What to take from this

If you already run Braintree on a Magento storefront, the relevant question is what happens at your next replatform, because that is when this decision actually gets made. If you are choosing a gateway now, the 6.70% of matched companies founded in the 2020s tells you how often new businesses pick it.

And if you are reading this page as a sales signal, the churn figure is the one to act on. TechnologyChecker.io has watched 1,811 domains leave Braintree in roughly six months, and domains that have just changed gateway are the ones re-evaluating everything else in the checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Braintree?

Our live crawl finds Braintree on 4,655 domains, resolving to 2,320 identifiable organisations. 42.36% of those with a known location are in the United States and 16.00% in the United Kingdom. Named users include LabCorp, Panasonic, Acer, SharkNinja, Aeropostale, PizzaExpress and the American Cancer Society.

How many customers does Braintree have?

We detect Braintree on 4,655 active domains as of our August 2026 rollup, of which 2,320 resolve to a company record. Counts are domains rather than accounts. The figure should be read alongside the 1,811 domains we have watched drop Braintree since March 2026, which is unusually high relative to the active base.

What is Braintree's market share?

Braintree holds 0.06% of Payment Processing globally and ranks 21st of 50, a ranking that mixes gateways with card marks. Among US gateways it is fourth on 945 companies, behind Stripe (56,626), Square (4,760) and authorize.net (4,649). Its international spread is wider than those three, with the United Kingdom contributing 16.00% of geolocated companies.

What are the best alternatives to Braintree?

Stripe is the dominant alternative by deployment and the destination for most Braintree domains we watch change gateway: 124 dropped Braintree while running Stripe in the observed window. Square and authorize.net are the other large US gateways, on 4,760 and 4,649 US companies. Adyen appears on far fewer domains because it is largely server-side and leaves little client-side trace.

Which countries use Braintree the most?

The United States leads with 945 matched companies (42.36%), followed by the United Kingdom on 357 (16.00%), Australia on 107, the Netherlands on 91 and Germany on 78. Taiwan contributes 75 and Hong Kong 38. Braintree is the least US-concentrated of the major gateways we publish.

What size companies use Braintree?

46.58% of matched companies employ 1 to 10 people and 28.64% employ 11 to 50, but the larger bands are proportionally the fattest of any gateway on this site: 14.23% employ 51 to 200 and 113 companies exceed 500 staff. That reflects Braintree's role as the gateway behind established PayPal merchant relationships.

How old are companies that use Braintree?

31.65% of matched companies were founded in the 2010s and 20.55% in the 2000s, with a notable 11.32% founded before 1960. Only 6.70% date from the 2020s, the smallest bucket apart from the 1960s. Braintree is winning very few newly founded businesses.

What is the ideal customer profile for Braintree?

An established retail, wholesale or manufacturing business, most often in the United States or United Kingdom, with an existing PayPal relationship and a storefront built in the Magento and jQuery era. The profile is defined less by industry than by vintage: Braintree's base skews to commerce sites that predate the current generation of checkout tooling.

Is Braintree declining?

Our churn data suggests yes. Since March 2026 we have watched 1,811 domains drop Braintree against 4,655 still running it, a ratio roughly five times authorize.net's. The monthly series on this page rises across June to August, but that reflects our coverage widening rather than net adoption, so the churn figure is the better directional signal.

Who owns Braintree?

Braintree is owned by PayPal, which acquired it in 2013 along with Venmo. That is worth noting when reading this category, because PayPal also appears as a separate row on 1,575,738 domains. The two measure different things: PayPal there is a checkout button, Braintree here is a gateway integration.

Why do Braintree detections appear on subdomains?

Because gateways load on the commerce surface rather than the homepage. LabCorp appears as patient.labcorp.com, Panasonic as store.eu.panasonic.com, Acer as store.acer.com and PizzaExpress as mobile-pay.pizzaexpress.com. A gateway is invisible on a corporate front page and visible where the checkout lives, which is why domain-level counts of gateways understate large organisations.

How does Braintree compare to Stripe?

Stripe is roughly 60 times larger among US companies, 56,626 against 945. TechnologyChecker.io also measures movement between them: 124 domains dropped Braintree while running Stripe in the observed window, against 45 moving the other way. We still do not publish that as a migration corridor, because 64.9% of domains that ever ran both still run both.
