Companies Using Square

Our live crawl identifies 19,076 domains running Square's online payment code, including Shiseido, BMW's US merchandise store, Orkin and Emory University's bookstore. Each detection is a checkout actively loading Square's payment library, so this measures live online deployments rather than Square's full merchant base, most of which sells through point-of-sale hardware our crawler cannot see. 9,613 domains resolve to an identifiable company, and the mix is small-merchant retail: 79.38% have ten or fewer employees and retail is the largest industry at 21.16%. Below is the full list of companies using Square, with headcount, industry, location and the exact host where we found it.

Square Usage Statistics

Read this series with care. Square reads 5,631 domains in June 2026, 5,881 in July, then 19,076 in August. That is not a tripling of Square's online merchant base. Our detection coverage for Square widened in early August, and more than 7,000 domains registered their first detection on 4 and 5 August alone against a baseline of roughly 800 a day. The August figure is the accurate current count; the June and July points understate what was already there, so the slope between them is a measurement change rather than market growth.

Which Countries Use Square the Most?

The United States accounts for 4,694 matched merchants (50.62%), but Australia is a striking second at 28.75% (2,666), ahead of Canada (6.61%), the United Kingdom (6.51%) and New Zealand (5.77%). That Australasian weighting is far above what any other US-headquartered payment platform in our corpus shows, and it reflects Block's acquisition of Afterpay and the ANZ merchant base that came with it.

Square Market Share Among Payment Processing

Square holds 0.23% of the Payment Processing category and ranks 13th of 50 tracked technologies. That figure measures web-visible online checkouts only. Square's business is weighted heavily toward physical point-of-sale, card readers and in-person retail, none of which leaves a trace a web crawler can see, so this share materially understates the company relative to online-only processors.

Merchants with 1 to 10 employees are 79.38% of matched companies and 11 to 50 a further 15.84%, so 95.22% have fewer than 50 staff. Organisations above 1,000 employees account for 0.33%. Square is built and priced for small sellers, and the distribution is one of the cleanest expressions of that positioning we measure.

Retail and apparel together are 29.86% of matched merchants, and the sectors beneath them are the giveaway: wellness and fitness, food and beverage, individual and family services. These are appointment-based and counter-service businesses that sell in person and added an online checkout afterwards, which is precisely the customer Square's combined point-of-sale and web offering is built for.

Square Alternatives & Competitors

Within Payment Processing, Square sits well behind PayPal (1,575,738 domains), Apple Pay (1,273,419) and Shop Pay (1,203,619). These are largely co-present rather than exclusive: Shop Pay appears on 55.25% of Square domains, Apple Pay on 54.62% and PayPal on 50.26%, so merchants offer several methods together.

Expert Analysis: Square Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

What this page can and cannot measure

Square is one of the largest payment companies in the world and it ranks 13th in our Payment Processing category with 0.23% share. Both statements are true, and reconciling them is the first thing to understand about this data.

We detect Square by its online payment library loading in a browser. That captures merchants who sell through a Square-powered website or checkout. It captures nothing at all of the card readers, terminals and point-of-sale installations that make up the larger part of Square's business, because a physical payment leaves no trace a web crawler can visit. The 19,076 figure is a measure of Square's web-visible commerce, and treating it as a measure of the company would be a category error.

Square ranks 13th here because most of its business happens at a counter, not in a browser. This page measures online checkouts, not merchants.

The August step is ours, not the market's

The monthly series reads 5,631 domains in June, 5,881 in July, then 19,076 in August. A tripling in one month would be extraordinary, and it did not happen.

Checking first-detection dates settles it: more than 7,000 domains registered their first Square detection on 4 and 5 August alone, against a baseline of roughly 800 a day. That is the shape of detection coverage widening, not merchants signing up. The August number is the accurate current count and the earlier points understate what was already deployed, so the slope between them describes our measurement rather than Square's business. We publish the series because the endpoint is correct, and we say plainly that the trajectory is not.

Australia at 28.75% is real, and it is the Afterpay inheritance

The country distribution shows the United States at 50.62% and Australia at 28.75%. For a US-headquartered payment platform that is extraordinary; nothing else in our corpus comes close to that Australasian weighting, and adding New Zealand at 5.77% pushes the region past a third of matched merchants.

This deserved verification, because the Australian cohort became visible in the same August coverage change. Splitting the base by first-detection date shows Australia at 32 domains before August and 2,634 after. The question is therefore whether the new clause is detecting Square or something else, and the rule answers it: every signal is Square-specific, matching js.squareup.com, squarecdn.com, the SqPaymentForm object and Square's own application state. These are genuine Square merchants we previously could not see, which makes the current snapshot more complete than what came before rather than less reliable.

The commercial reading follows Block's 2022 acquisition of Afterpay, an Australian company with a deep local merchant network. The geography of Square's online base now reflects that combination.

A counter-service customer base

Retail leads at 21.16% of matched merchants and apparel adds 8.70%. Underneath sit wellness and fitness at 3.63%, food and beverage at 3.57% and individual and family services at 3.52%.

Those lower rows are the more informative ones. Salons, studios, cafes and small service businesses are not natural ecommerce operations; they sell in person and added a web checkout because their payment provider offered one. That is Square's distinctive commercial position, and it explains the size distribution: 95.22% of matched merchants have fewer than fifty employees, and only 0.33% exceed a thousand. No other platform in this category shows a base concentrated so far down-market.

More than half of Square's online merchants also run Shop Pay. These are multi-channel sellers, not a captive base.

The merchants are not exclusive

Shop Pay appears on 55.25% of Square domains, Apple Pay on 54.62% and PayPal on 50.26%. Over half of Square's web-visible merchants are also selling through Shopify.

That matters for anyone using this list. It is not a captive customer base, and Square's presence on a domain does not indicate that Square handles the merchant's ecommerce, only that it handles some of it. Facebook Pixel on 52.85% completes the picture: these are small paid-acquisition sellers running several checkouts at once, and a competitive pitch to them is a share-of-volume argument rather than a replacement one. We publish no switching table for the same reason, since payment methods on a single checkout coexist rather than displace one another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Square?

Our live crawl finds Square's online payment code on 19,076 domains, resolving to 9,613 identifiable merchants. Named users include Shiseido, BMW's US merchandise store, Orkin and the Emory University bookstore. The base is small retail: 79.38% have ten or fewer employees and retail is the largest industry at 21.16%.

How many customers does Square have?

We detect 19,076 domains running Square across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 9,613 of them (50.4%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 1,859 domains carried a Square detection previously and no longer do.

What is Square's market share?

Square holds 0.23% of the Payment Processing category, ranking #13. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.

What are the best alternatives to Square?

Within our Payment Processing category the largest are PayPal (1,575,738 domains), Apple Pay (1,273,419) and Shop Pay (1,203,619). For online-only comparison Stripe is the closer substitute, while for combined point-of-sale and ecommerce the alternatives are Shopify POS and Clover rather than any web-visible payment button.

Which countries use Square the most?

The United States leads at 50.62% of matched merchants (4,694), with Australia an unusually strong second at 28.75% (2,666), then Canada at 6.61%, the United Kingdom at 6.51% and New Zealand at 5.77%. The Australasian share is far above what other US payment platforms show and follows Block's acquisition of Afterpay.

What size companies use Square?

Merchants with 1 to 10 employees are 79.38% of matched companies and 11 to 50 a further 15.84%, so 95.22% have fewer than 50 staff. Only 0.33% employ more than 1,000 people. Square is priced and built for small sellers, and the distribution reflects that more cleanly than almost any platform we track.

How old are companies that use Square?

Merchants founded in the 2010s are 48.20% of matched companies and those founded in the 2020s a further 23.22%, so 71.42% were founded since 2010. A further 14.51% date from the 2000s. This is a young small-business base consistent with a platform that made card acceptance accessible without a traditional merchant account.

What is the ideal customer profile for Square?

Based on our matched merchant data, the typical Square online deployment belongs to a US or Australian company with fewer than ten employees, founded since 2010, in retail, apparel, wellness or food service. The defining trait is a business that sells in person first and added an online checkout, rather than a pure ecommerce operation.

How many businesses use Square?

We detect Square's online checkout on 19,076 domains as of our August 2026 crawl, of which 9,613 match to a named company. This counts web deployments only. Most of Square's merchant base sells through point-of-sale hardware and card readers, which leaves no web signature, so the company's real customer count is far higher.

What industries use Square most?

Retail leads at 21.16% of matched merchants, followed by Retail Apparel and Fashion at 8.70%, Wellness and Fitness Services at 3.63%, Food and Beverage Services at 3.57% and Individual and Family Services at 3.52%. The mix is dominated by counter-service and appointment-based businesses that also sell online.

How do you detect Square on a website?

We match Square's own payment library: the SqPaymentForm and Square.Analytics JavaScript objects, a Square application identifier in the page bootstrap state, script requests to js.squareup.com and squarecdn.com, and XHR calls to squareup.com. All require the checkout to be actively loading Square code on a page we crawled.

Why is Square's market share low if it is a major payment company?

Because this measurement only sees the web. Square holds 0.23% of our Payment Processing category, but that counts online checkouts loading its library. Square's business centres on physical point-of-sale, card readers and in-person retail, none of which a crawler can detect, so the share understates the company rather than describing its market position.

What technologies are used alongside Square?

Cloudflare fronts 91.29% of these domains, Google Analytics appears on 58.18% and Google Tag Manager on 55.70%. Facebook Pixel on 52.85% marks them as paid-acquisition merchants. Notably, Shop Pay appears on 55.25%, so more than half of Square's online merchants also sell through Shopify.

Is Square growing?

Our figures cannot answer that. The series reads 5,631 domains in June 2026, 5,881 in July and 19,076 in August, but the August jump is our detection coverage widening rather than adoption: over 7,000 domains recorded a first detection on 4 and 5 August alone. Treat 19,076 as the accurate current count and disregard the slope.
