Companies Using Zenfolio
Our October 2026 crawl finds Zenfolio on 3,195 domains, and that number is a floor on its customers. Zenfolio hosts photographers' websites, and many of them publish only on a zenfolio.com address; our crawl lists fewer than 200 of those as domains of their own, and Zenfolio's plan table leaves a custom domain off its Basic plan. So the count is mostly photographers who connected their own domain. Below is the list of companies that use Zenfolio, with size, country and industry. Most are sole portrait and event studios. The biggest names are photo archives at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Southern Arkansas University and The Spokesman-Review.
Zenfolio ranks 9th of the 29 tools in Photo Galleries, with 0.21% of the category. That table is led by Slider Revolution, a WordPress slider on 1,306,433 domains, so the fair comparison is with other photographer platforms, where Zenfolio's 3,195 sits just above SmugMug's 2,909. 96.37% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff, and when we opened 150 random Zenfolio domains in October, 146 served a working Zenfolio site.

Zenfolio Usage Statistics
Zenfolio reads 2,831 domains in June 2026, then 2,935 in July, 3,016 in August, 3,193 in September and 3,195 in October. That climb isn't a wave of new photographers. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, as dead sites drop out and newly found ones come in, and our detection widened over the same months. September to October is flat. Since we began tracking Zenfolio in March 2026, 54 domains dropped it on at least one hostname, and 23 of those still ran it on another hostname in mid-October.

Which Countries Use Zenfolio the Most?
Which countries use Zenfolio the most? The United States, with 1,842 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (318), Australia (66), Canada (45) and Germany (26). The UK is the one to notice: about one British company for every six American ones, where SmugMug's profile shows about one for every ten (95 to 904). Ireland (12), the Netherlands (11) and Norway (10) follow, based on our enriched company data.
Share of the 2,491 Zenfolio domains we matched to a company record — 78.0% of the 3,195 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Zenfolio Market Share Among Photo Galleries
What is Zenfolio's market share? 0.21% of Photo Galleries, 9th of the 29 tools we track there, on 3,195 domains, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The share looks tiny because the category mixes hosted platforms with WordPress plugins, and Slider Revolution alone holds 85.99%. Among the photographer platforms in the table, Zenfolio has the most domains: SmugMug has 2,909, Alboom Proof 2,063 and Wfolio 1,767.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Zenfolio Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Zenfolio? Almost all are very small. 96.37% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 2.98% have 11 to 50. Only 15 have more than 50 staff, and most of those are institutions running a photo archive on a subdomain, such as photos.ulm.edu at the University of Louisiana at Monroe or pics.spokesman.com at The Spokesman-Review.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (43.36%), then the 2000s (36.64%), so four in five started between 2000 and 2019. Only 3.93% date from the 2020s. Read it with care, though: just 535 Zenfolio companies list a founding year at all, which fits a base made mostly of sole photographers.
What Industries Use Zenfolio the Most?
Photography leads at 63.47% of matched companies, and Individual and Family Services follows at 17.94%; on these profiles that label usually belongs to a family, newborn or school portrait studio. Media Production (2.44%) and Retail (1.97%) come next, and no other industry reaches 1%, based on our enriched company data at TechnologyChecker.io.
Universities using Zenfolio include the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Southern Arkansas University, William Jewell College and Manchester Community College, each on a photos subdomain. Newspapers on Zenfolio include The Spokesman-Review and the American Press in Lake Charles. Event organisers using Zenfolio include Anime Boston and the Czech Baseball Association, whose photo bank sits at fotobanka.baseball.cz.
Zenfolio Alternatives & Competitors
Zenfolio's real rivals in this table are the other hosted platforms. SmugMug (2,909 domains, 0.19%) is the closest, and the two are used differently: only 130 of Zenfolio's 3,300 custom domains in an October check run it on a subdomain alone, against 523 of SmugMug's 2,548. Alboom Proof (2,063) and Wfolio (1,767) are smaller photographer platforms. Flickr's 1,551 isn't like-for-like, because its row counts sites embedding Flickr widgets, and Flickr belongs to SmugMug.
| Technology | Domains | Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| 2,909 | 0.19% | |
| 2,063 | 0.14% | |
| 1,767 | 0.12% | |
Flickr | 1,551 | 0.1% |
Zenfolio Customer Migration
Tech Stack of Zenfolio-Powered Websites
Most of what runs on Zenfolio sites is Zenfolio's own code, so read this stack as the platform rather than the photographer. Percentages are of the 3,477 live Zenfolio domains in our crawl. Format shows on 88.04% because Zenfolio's pages report to a format.com monitoring endpoint; Zenfolio bought Format in 2021. Cloudflare (99.91%) is the network Zenfolio serves custom domains through, and Ackee (8.05%) loads from ackee.zenfolio.com. The owners' own choices are small: Google Analytics on 6.87%, WordPress on 2.01% and Stripe on 0.29%.

Expert Analysis: Zenfolio Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I spent years on crawling infrastructure before we started TechnologyChecker, and hosted platforms are where a domain count is most likely to mislead. Zenfolio is a good example. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 3,195 domains, 2,491 of them matched to a company. A domain counts when its pages load Zenfolio's scripts, from cdn.zenfolio.com or Zenfolio's booking widget, or create Zenfolio's script object. That's a clean signal: when I opened 150 random domains from the live set, 146 served a working Zenfolio site. What the signal can't see is the photographer who never put the site on a domain of their own.
A floor, not a census
Zenfolio's about page talks about a community of more than 500,000 photographers. We see a few thousand domains. The gap is structural. Many Zenfolio accounts publish only at a name.zenfolio.com address, and our crawl lists only a few of those as separate domains (182 in an October check). Zenfolio's plan table also leaves a custom domain off Basic, its $9 plan, so a whole tier is close to invisible to a domain count. What's left is mostly Professional and Advanced customers who connected their own domain, a better-paying slice than the base as a whole.
Sales signal: nearly every domain on this list is a photographer paying for a plan that includes a custom domain. That's a narrower list than "Zenfolio users", and a better one to price against.
Flat since September
The chart reads 2,831 in June, 2,935 in July, 3,016 in August, 3,193 in September and 3,195 in October. I wouldn't call that growth. We don't recrawl a fixed panel: dead domains drop out each month and newly found ones come in, and our detection widened over the same months. The flat line from September to October is the honest reading. Churn is low too. Since March 2026, 54 domains dropped Zenfolio on at least one hostname, and 23 of those still ran it on another hostname in mid-October.
"Zenfolio's list moves slowly. The domains we count belong to photographers who pay to put the site on their own name, and very few of them leave in a given month." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: treat this as a stable pool of about 3,200 small paying businesses, not a fast-growing segment.
One-person studios, with an institutional tail
96.37% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and photography is the industry on 63.47%. Individual and Family Services adds 17.94%, which on these profiles is usually a family, newborn or school portrait studio. Founding years cluster in the 2010s (43.36%) and the 2000s (36.64%); only 3.93% are from the 2020s, so these are established studios rather than new ones. The names with the biggest LinkedIn following are institutions using Zenfolio for a photo archive on a subdomain: the University of Louisiana at Monroe on photos.ulm.edu, Southern Arkansas University, William Jewell College, Manchester Community College, The Spokesman-Review on pics.spokesman.com and the Canaves Oia hotels in Santorini. Zenfolio doesn't publish a customer list we could cross-check, so every name here comes from our crawl alone.
Sales signal: the buyer is the photographer. Print labs, album design, booking, model releases and bookkeeping for sole traders all fit. At the universities, talk to the communications or athletics photo team.
American, with a British second market
The United States has 1,842 matched companies and the United Kingdom 318, about one British company for every six American ones. SmugMug's profile shows roughly one for every ten (95 to 904). Australia (66), Canada (45) and Germany (26) follow, and Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway have 10 to 12 each. Outside the English-speaking markets Zenfolio is thin.
Sales signal: a UK print lab, insurer or accounting tool for photographers will find proportionally more fit on Zenfolio's list than on SmugMug's.
Zenfolio against SmugMug
Our crawl shows no switching corridor for Zenfolio, so the useful comparison is shape. Of 3,300 custom domains in an October check, only 130 run Zenfolio on a subdomain alone; the rest put it on the main site. SmugMug is the opposite case: 523 of its 2,548 custom domains run it only on a subdomain, usually a photos subdomain of a school, university or newspaper. Zenfolio is a photographer's whole website. SmugMug is far more often an organisation's photo archive sitting beside another site.
"Zenfolio is the photographer's storefront. SmugMug, about a fifth of the time, is a school's or a newspaper's photo cupboard. Same category, different buyer." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: pitch Zenfolio domains as small businesses that sell. Pitch SmugMug's subdomain sites to the marketing or athletics office that runs them.
The stack is mostly Zenfolio's
Most of this stack is Zenfolio's own code. Format shows on 88.04% of the 3,477 live domains in our crawl because Zenfolio's pages send monitoring data to a format.com endpoint; Zenfolio announced its purchase of Format in November 2021. Cloudflare (99.91%) is the network Zenfolio serves custom domains through, and Ackee (8.05%) loads from ackee.zenfolio.com. The photographer's own choices are small: Google Analytics on 6.87%, WordPress on 2.01% and Stripe on 0.29%.
Sales signal: few Zenfolio photographers add their own tags. A tool that needs a script on the site has to work inside Zenfolio's builder or through an integration Zenfolio supports.
What it costs
Zenfolio's pricing page (checked 14 October 2026) lists Basic at $9, Professional at $23 and Advanced at $40 a month, paid monthly; a first-year annual offer of $7, $11.50 and $20 a month ran until 15 October. Selling starts on Professional, every order carries a 7% commerce fee, and booking is a $10 add-on below Advanced.
Sales signal: the 7% fee on every order is the number a rival will lead with, and photographers with steady print sales are the ones who'll do the sums.
Key takeaways
1. 3,195 domains, a floor on Zenfolio's customers, since the count misses most zenfolio.com-only sites and the Basic plan.
2. 146 of 150 sampled domains were working Zenfolio sites.
3. 96.37% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff.
4. A British market about a sixth the size of the American one.
5. The stack is the platform's: Format, Cloudflare and Ackee all come from Zenfolio.
How to use this list
Filter by country and industry, then treat each domain as one photographer. For the full list of 3,195 Zenfolio domains with company data, explore TechnologyChecker.io, and compare it with the SmugMug profile, whose customers look quite different.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Zenfolio?
Mostly independent photographers. Our October 2026 crawl finds Zenfolio on 3,195 domains; 96.37% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff, and 63.47% list photography as their industry. The larger names use it for photo archives on a subdomain, including the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Southern Arkansas University, William Jewell College, The Spokesman-Review and Anime Boston.
How many customers does Zenfolio have?
More than our count shows. Zenfolio's about page describes a community of more than 500,000 photographers. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 3,195 domains, mostly photographers' own domains plus fewer than 200 zenfolio.com sites listed separately. Many accounts publish only on a zenfolio.com address, and the Basic plan has no custom domain, so read 3,195 as a floor.
What is Zenfolio's market share?
0.21% of Photo Galleries, 9th of the 29 tools we track, on 3,195 domains. WordPress plugins dominate that category, with Slider Revolution at 85.99%, so the share understates Zenfolio's place among hosted photographer platforms. There it leads our table: SmugMug has 2,909 domains, Alboom Proof 2,063, Wfolio 1,767 and Flickr's widget embeds 1,551.
What are the best alternatives to Zenfolio?
SmugMug is the closest like-for-like option in our data, on 2,909 domains, with unlimited photo storage on every plan, per its plans page. Alboom Proof (2,063 domains) and Wfolio (1,767) are smaller photographer platforms. A photographer who would rather run WordPress can use a gallery plugin such as FooGallery or NextGEN Gallery instead of a hosted platform.
Which countries use Zenfolio the most?
The United States, with 1,842 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (318), Australia (66), Canada (45) and Germany (26). The UK share stands out: about one British company for every six American ones, against about one in ten on SmugMug's profile. Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway follow with 10 to 12 each, based on our enriched company data.
What size companies use Zenfolio?
Very small ones. 96.37% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 2.98% have 11 to 50; only 15 have more than 50 staff. Those few are mostly institutions running a photo archive on a subdomain, such as photos.ulm.edu at the University of Louisiana at Monroe or pics.spokesman.com at The Spokesman-Review.
How old are companies that use Zenfolio?
Among matched companies with a founding year, 43.36% were founded in the 2010s and 36.64% in the 2000s, so four in five started between 2000 and 2019. Only 3.93% date from the 2020s. Just 535 Zenfolio companies list a founding year at all, which fits a customer base made mostly of sole photographers rather than registered firms.
What is the ideal customer profile for Zenfolio?
The ideal Zenfolio customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (96.37%), Location: United States, then UK and Australia, Founded: 2000-2019, Industry: Photography and portrait studios, Typical site: Photographer's own domain on Zenfolio — based on our analysis of 2,491 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
How much does Zenfolio cost?
Zenfolio's pricing page lists Basic at $9 a month, Professional at $23 and Advanced at $40, paid monthly. Annual billing showed a first-year offer of $7, $11.50 and $20 a month that ran until 15 October 2026. Selling tools start on Professional, and every order carries a 7% commerce fee plus card processing. Checked 14 October 2026.
Is Zenfolio worth it?
That depends on whether you sell. Basic, at $9 a month, has no selling tools and no custom domain, so it's a portfolio and client-gallery plan. Sales start on Professional, at $23 a month, with a 7% fee per order. The sites themselves are kept up: 146 of 150 random Zenfolio domains in our crawl served a working site in October 2026.
Which is better, SmugMug or Zenfolio?
They suit different buyers in our data. Zenfolio has 3,195 domains, almost all small studios using it as their whole site; only 130 of 3,300 custom domains run it on a subdomain alone. SmugMug has 2,909 domains, and 523 of its 2,548 custom domains use it as a photo archive on a subdomain, often for schools, universities and newspapers.
What is Zenfolio and what does it do?
Zenfolio is a hosted website and client-gallery platform for photographers, running since 2005 and based in Redwood City, California, per its about page. Photographers build a portfolio site, deliver proofing galleries and, on paid plans, sell prints and downloads with lab fulfilment. In November 2021 Zenfolio announced it had bought Format, the Toronto portfolio builder.
Is Zenfolio still in business?
Yes. Zenfolio sells current plans on its site, and our October 2026 crawl finds it live on 3,195 domains. When we opened 150 random domains from that set, 146 served a working Zenfolio site; the other four had moved or stopped answering. Since March 2026 only 54 domains dropped Zenfolio on a hostname, and 23 of them still run it on another.
