Companies Using Recharge
Our live crawl identifies 20,108 domains running Recharge, resolving to 9,121 identifiable organisations. Named users include Fender, Dermalogica, Poppi, Barstool Sports, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, European Wax Center, Fuller's Brewery, Café Britt, Scout & Cellar and The Coffee Club.
Recharge ranks 12th in Payment Processing with 0.24% share, and that placement is misleading in a specific way. The rows above it are card marks and wallet buttons: PayPal, Apple Pay, Shop Pay, Visa and Mastercard all appear together on a single checkout, so they are not five decisions a merchant made. Recharge is not a checkout button at all. It is the subscription layer that turns a one-time order into a recurring one, and the honest comparison is against the other apps that do that job.
Measured that way the picture changes and the surprise is that Recharge does not lead. Among subscription tools we detect, Seal Subscriptions reaches 24,897 domains and Appstle 21,193, both ahead of Recharge on 19,676 live domains. Skio reaches 1,306 and Chargebee 2,306. Recharge is the best-known name in Shopify subscriptions and the third-most-deployed, which is what happens when a paid platform competes with app-store rivals that install for free.
The dependency is close to absolute: 99.87% of Recharge domains also run Shopify. That is not an overlap, it is the product. Recharge sells into one ecommerce platform, so every number on this page describes Shopify merchants and nothing else.

Recharge Usage Statistics
Recharge reads 17,042 domains on our first full monthly rollup in June 2026, 19,760 in July and 20,108 in August. Read that as a trend rather than a same-store comparison: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The August figure is the same one quoted at the top of this page.

Which Countries Use Recharge the Most?
The United States accounts for 5,584 matched companies, 62.83% of the geographic base. The United Kingdom follows on 1,117 (12.57%), then Canada on 547 and Australia on 540. Recharge's footprint tracks the English-speaking direct-to-consumer market closely, with continental Europe thin by comparison: Germany reaches 171 and France 128.
Share of the 9,121 Recharge domains we matched to a company record — 45.4% of the 20,108 we detect. Top 12 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Recharge Market Share Among Payment Processing
Recharge holds 0.24% of Payment Processing and ranks 12th of 50. The ranking is dominated by card marks and wallet buttons that co-occur on one checkout rather than compete, so it says little about the subscription market Recharge actually sells into. Against subscription tools it is third, behind Seal Subscriptions on 24,897 domains and Appstle on 21,193.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Recharge Customers by Company Size & Age
64.44% of matched Recharge companies employ 1 to 10 people and 26.40% employ 11 to 50, so nine in ten are under fifty staff. Only 23 companies in the matched set exceed 1,000 employees. Subscription commerce on Shopify is a small-merchant market, and the large names further down this page are the exception rather than the pattern.

What Industries Use Recharge the Most?
Food and Beverage Services leads at 20.51%, followed by Wellness and Fitness Services (13.63%), Retail (8.18%) and Personal Care Product Manufacturing (6.79%). Food and Beverage Manufacturing adds a further 5.72% and Retail Health and Personal Care Products 4.74%.
One idea explains this distribution, and it is not ecommerce in general. Coffee, supplements, skincare and pet food are consumable: the customer finishes the product and needs it again on a predictable cycle. Combine the food, beverage, wellness and personal-care rows and they account for roughly half the matched base. Categories where a purchase lasts years are almost absent. Recharge is not sold to merchants who want recurring revenue in the abstract, it is bought by merchants whose product runs out.
Recharge Alternatives & Competitors
We publish no switching corridors on this profile, and the reason is measurable. Of the domains that have ever run both Recharge and Seal Subscriptions, 84.7% still run both today; for Appstle the figure is 69.0% and for Skio 65.6%. Merchants stack subscription apps rather than replace them, often testing one on a product line while another handles the rest. Calling those overlaps migrations would describe a market shift that our data does not show.

Tech Stack of Recharge-Powered Websites
Shopify appears on 99.87% of Recharge domains, which makes the platform a prerequisite rather than a correlation. Klaviyo follows on 67.37% and Klaviyo Reviews on 57.35%, so two thirds of Recharge merchants run the same email and reviews vendor. Facebook Pixel reaches 68.35% and TikTok Pixel 27.29%. The stack is consistent enough to describe as a template: Shopify for the store, Recharge for the recurring order, Klaviyo for the lifecycle email that keeps it alive.

Expert Analysis: Recharge Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

The rank is wrong because the category is wrong
Recharge is 12th in Payment Processing on 0.24% share. Both numbers are accurate and neither is useful.
Look at what sits above it. PayPal on 1,575,738 domains, Apple Pay on 1,273,419, Shop Pay on 1,203,619, Visa on 888,702, Mastercard on 888,384. Those are not five competing decisions, they are the logos on one checkout, and a typical Shopify store displays several at once. We can show that directly from Recharge's own domains: 85.39% of them also run Apple Pay and 84.61% also run Shop Pay. If those were rivals, that overlap would be impossible.
The deeper problem is that Recharge does not do the job the category describes. It does not move money. It decides that an order should repeat, holds the schedule, and hands the charge to whatever gateway the store already uses. Ranking it against Visa is like ranking a calendar against a bank.
Against its actual competitors, Recharge is third
Restrict the comparison to tools that manage recurring orders and the order changes. Seal Subscriptions reaches 24,897 live domains. Appstle reaches 21,193. Recharge reaches 19,676. Chargebee is at 2,306 and Skio at 1,306.
The best-known subscription app on Shopify is the third-most-installed. That gap is a distribution story, not a quality one.
Seal and Appstle are app-store products with free and low-cost tiers. Recharge starts at a monthly platform fee and sells upward. A count of deployed storefronts rewards the first model and understates the second, which is worth stating plainly rather than hiding: our numbers measure installs, and a free app accumulates installs faster than a paid one regardless of how much commerce runs through either. A merchant choosing between them should read this ranking as a measure of reach, not of capability.
The Shopify number is not an overlap, it is the boundary
99.87% of Recharge domains also run Shopify. In most of our profiles a figure like that would prompt a contamination check, because a near-total co-occurrence usually means one product is being counted through another. Here it is simply the product's shape. Recharge is built for Shopify, sold through Shopify, and installed by Shopify merchants.
It does change how the rest of this page should be read. Every distribution below describes Shopify merchants. When 64.44% of matched companies employ ten people or fewer, that is a fact about who sells subscriptions on Shopify, not about subscription commerce generally. Anyone using this page to size the recurring-billing market as a whole will get the wrong answer.
Replenishment, not recurring revenue
The industry mix is the most instructive section on this page. Food and Beverage Services leads at 20.51%, Wellness and Fitness Services follows at 13.63%, Personal Care Product Manufacturing at 6.79%, Food and Beverage Manufacturing at 5.72% and Retail Health and Personal Care Products at 4.74%. Together those consumable categories are about half the matched base.
That is a tighter pattern than a payments category would predict. Recurring revenue is attractive to every merchant alive, but subscriptions only survive where the customer genuinely needs the product again. Coffee runs out. Supplements run out. Moisturiser runs out. The named list on this page reads the same way: The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Café Britt, The Coffee Club, Poppi, Dermalogica, Scout & Cellar. Fender is the interesting exception, and it is not selling recurring guitars.
Subscription software does not create recurring demand. It collects it where it already exists, which is why half this market sells things that run out.
What the age curve says
55.63% of matched Recharge companies were founded in the 2010s and 22.96% in the 2020s. Nearly four in five post-date 2010, which is the youngest cohort of any payment technology TechnologyChecker.io publishes. Compare it to authorize.net, where the founding years spread almost evenly back to the 1960s.
That contrast is the whole direct-to-consumer story in one distribution. Recharge did not win share from incumbents so much as arrive alongside a generation of brands that were born selling online and never had a legacy checkout to migrate away from.
Stacking, not switching
We publish no migration corridors here and the reason is worth showing. Of the domains that have ever run both Recharge and Seal Subscriptions, 84.7% still run both. For Appstle it is 69.0%, for Skio 65.6%. The raw query does return switch pairs, but a population that overwhelmingly keeps both products is coexisting, not migrating. Merchants trial a second subscription app on one product line and leave the first in place.
We would rather publish nothing than publish a corridor that describes a market shift our data does not support. If Recharge starts losing merchants outright, the still-both share will fall and the corridor will appear on this page.
What to take from this
If you sell something a customer finishes, Recharge sits in a dense and well-mapped stack: Shopify underneath, Klaviyo on 67.37% for lifecycle email, Klaviyo Reviews on 57.35%. That consistency is a real advantage, because integration questions have known answers.
If you are not on Shopify, this page is not evidence for you. And if you are choosing on install count alone, note that the two apps ahead of Recharge got there by being free. Deployment breadth and product fit are different questions, and TechnologyChecker.io only measures the first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Recharge?
Our live crawl finds Recharge on 20,108 domains, resolving to 9,121 identifiable organisations. 62.83% of those with a known location are in the United States. Named users include Fender, Dermalogica, Poppi, Barstool Sports, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, European Wax Center and Fuller's Brewery. The typical user is far smaller: nine in ten employ fewer than fifty people.
How many customers does Recharge have?
We detect Recharge on 20,108 active domains as of our August 2026 rollup, of which 9,121 resolve to a company record. Counts are domains rather than accounts: one merchant running several storefronts appears several times, and a merchant on a platform-hosted domain may not resolve to a company at all. Treat the figure as deployed storefronts, not paying customers.
What is Recharge's market share?
Recharge holds 0.24% of Payment Processing globally and ranks 12th of 50, but that ranking mixes subscription apps with card marks and wallet buttons that all appear on the same checkout. Restricted to subscription tools, Recharge is third on 19,676 live domains, behind Seal Subscriptions on 24,897 and Appstle on 21,193.
What are the best alternatives to Recharge?
By deployment the leading alternatives are Seal Subscriptions (24,897 domains), Appstle (21,193), Chargebee (2,306) and Skio (1,306). Seal and Appstle both out-deploy Recharge, which reflects app-store distribution and free tiers rather than revenue. Skio is much smaller by install count but competes directly for larger Shopify merchants.
Which countries use Recharge the most?
The United States leads with 5,584 matched companies, 62.83% of the geographic base, followed by the United Kingdom on 1,117 and Canada on 547. Australia adds 540. Continental Europe is comparatively thin, with Germany on 171 and France on 128, so the footprint tracks the English-speaking direct-to-consumer market.
What size companies use Recharge?
64.44% of matched Recharge companies employ 1 to 10 people and 26.40% employ 11 to 50. Companies over 1,000 employees account for 23 of the matched set. Recharge is deployed overwhelmingly by small merchants, with a small tail of recognisable brands running dedicated subscription storefronts.
How old are companies that use Recharge?
55.63% of matched companies were founded in the 2010s and a further 22.96% in the 2020s, so roughly four in five post-date 2010. That is the youngest age profile of any payment technology we publish, and it matches the arrival of direct-to-consumer commerce as a category rather than anything specific to Recharge.
What is the ideal customer profile for Recharge?
A Shopify merchant with 1 to 10 employees, founded since 2010, based in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Australia, selling a consumable product in coffee, supplements, personal care or pet food. The defining trait is not size but replenishment: the product runs out on a predictable cycle, which is what makes a subscription worth building.
Does Recharge require Shopify?
In practice yes. 99.87% of the Recharge domains we detect also run Shopify, so the platform is effectively a prerequisite rather than a common pairing. Every distribution on this page therefore describes Shopify merchants, and none of it should be read as evidence about subscription billing on other ecommerce platforms.
Is Recharge a payment gateway?
No. Recharge manages recurring orders and subscription logic, then hands the transaction to a gateway. That is why it sits alongside rather than instead of the payment methods on the same checkout: 84.61% of Recharge domains also run Shop Pay and 85.39% run Apple Pay. Our category places it in Payment Processing, which is why its global rank compares it against card marks.
What does Recharge cost?
Recharge publishes a Standard plan at $99 per month plus per-transaction fees, with custom pricing above it. We do not verify pricing from the crawl and vendors change terms without notice, so treat that as a starting point and confirm on the vendor's own site. The deployment counts on this page are independent of pricing.
Why does Recharge trail Seal Subscriptions and Appstle by install count?
Install count measures deployed storefronts, not revenue or merchant size. Seal and Appstle distribute through the Shopify app store with free or low-cost tiers, which produces a large base of small installs. Recharge starts at a monthly platform fee. TechnologyChecker.io counts what is deployed, so a free app with many small merchants can out-rank a paid one serving larger ones.
